Maharashtra swearing-in ceremony LIVE: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis will take oath as Chief Minister.
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis will take oath as Chief Minister of Maharashtra For the third time after Mahayuti’s landslide victory in the Assembly elections 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance Mahayuti includes Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Of the 288 seats, Mahayuti won 230 seats – of which BJP won 132, Shiv Sena 57 and NCP 41.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many religious and political leaders will attend the swearing-in ceremony to be held at 5:30 pm on Thursday.
Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar will be seen as Deputy Chief Ministers.

Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan, a decades-old silent witness to the city’s turbulent political and socio-cultural history, awaits a new role on Thursday evening as at 5.30 pm, Devendra Fadnavis will take oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
This will be the first time that Azad Maidan will host the swearing-in ceremony of a Chief Minister, with its popularity and location giving added significance to Mr Fadnavis’ return to the top post in the state.
Of the 288 seats, Mahayuti won 230 seats – of which BJP won 132, Shiv Sena 57 and NCP 41. None of the parties in the Maha Vikas Aghadi or the MVA – Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP) – are eligible for the post of Leader of the Opposition (LOP) in the newly elected Maharashtra Assembly. A party with 10 percent or 29 seats out of 288 seats can claim this post. However, as per legislative rules, all MVA parties have failed to fall short of the target.
There is speculation that two MLAs will take oath along with Devendra Fadnavis – Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Ajit Pawar spent most of his political career under the tutelage of his uncle Sharad Pawar, a political stalwart. In the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections, where the Mahayuti alliance won a thumping majority, Ajit Pawar’s NCP won 41 seats, proving that the decision to part ways with his uncle was a well-considered move.
Eknath Shinde, who exited the race for Maharashtra chief ministerial post last week and has been keeping a low profile since then, will join the Devendra Fadnavis government as his deputy chief minister, sources told NDTV.
“Yesterday I requested Eknath Shinde to remain in the cabinet… I hope he will do so… The chief minister’s post is just a technical agreement between us… We have been together to take decisions and do so. will continue.” Devendra Fadnavis expressed his “special thanks” to his predecessor in the top post.

Devendra Fadnavis’s name surprised on invitation to Maharashtra oath ceremony
The invitation issued by Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik lists the name of the Chief Minister’s choice as “Devendra Sarita Gangadharrao Fadnavis”. While Sarita is the name of Devendra Fadnavis’s mother, Gangadhar is his father’s name. Although it is customary for residents of Maharashtra to use their father’s name as their middle name, this is probably the first time Mr Fadnavis has used his mother’s name for any official purpose.
Devendra Fadnavis will take oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra today at 5:30 pm at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.
Maharashtra’s swearing-in ceremony is expected to attract 42,000 spectators, with seating for 2,000 VIPs, including religious leaders and political leaders.

This year, when the BJP-led grand alliance suffered a major setback in the Lok Sabha elections, few people would have imagined how much the picture would change after months. The BJP made its best-ever score in Maharashtra in the 2024 state elections, winning 132 of the 148 seats. Mahayuti’s strength reached 230 in the 288-member assembly.
But forming a government is always a difficult task when multiple allies are involved. Eknath Shinde’s forces wanted to retain the chief ministerial post and argued that the election was won under his leadership. But the BJP backtracked and the MLAs rallied in support of Devendra Fadnavis and pointed out how he has taken a backseat in 2022 and he needs to be rewarded for taking the party towards a huge mandate. Mr Fadnavis once said he was a “modern Abhimanyu” who knew how to break the Chakravyuh. His Chakravyuh demanded patience, loyalty and sacrifice. He rescues all three, and emerges stronger.
