Gukesh succumbs to Carlsen while Erigaisi trumps Yi

Home favourite Magnus Carlsen beat world champion D Gukesh in the opening round of Norway Chess here late on Monday.

Carlsen tried to unnerve Gukesh by employing the Jobava London, a rarely-used opening move.

But Gukesh, playing with black pieces, did not fall for the trap and  neutralised the  advantage by the 11th move.

However, Carlsen, recovered to win the contest in four hours and 56 moves.

Earlier, Arjun Erigaisi beat his Chinese opponent Wei Yi in Armageddon after their classical-format game ended in a draw.
