Virat Kohli sets unmatched record with 900+ rating points across all formats

More than a year after stepping away from T20Is and two months following his retirement from Test cricket, Virat Kohli continues to shatter records. On Wednesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) updated his career-best T20I rating points to 909, thus making him the only batter in the history to breach the 900-mark across all three formats of the game.

Kohli, who retired from T20Is after playing a match-winning knock of 76 in the final of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, saw his T20I rating upgraded from 897 to 909, according to Wisden. This makes it the third-highest rating ever recorded in T20Is, trailing only behind England`s Dawid Malan (919) and India’s Suryakumar Yadav (912).

In Tests, Kohli achieved a peak rating of 937 points during India`s tour of England in 2018, the highest ever by an Indian batter and the 11th-highest overall. That series remains one of his most dominant, with 593 runs in 10 innings, including two centuries and three half-centuries. Despite India’s batting struggles during the tour, Kohli stood tall as the lone warrior.

In the ODI format, Kohli also scaled the 909-point mark during the same 2018 tour of England. He amassed 191 runs in three ODIs with two fifties, asserting his dominance across formats. At one point, Kohli held the rare distinction of being the No. 1 ranked batter in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is simultaneously.

Kohli`s T20I career ended with 4,188 runs from 125 matches at an average of 48.69. He notched up one century and 25 half-centuries, with a highest score of 122*, making him the third-highest run-scorer in T20I history.

In May this year, Kohli bid farewell to Test cricket ahead of the new World Test Championship cycle, following a lean patch in Australia, where he managed just 190 runs in five Tests at an average of 23.75. Despite the poor tour, he retired as India’s fourth-highest Test run-scorer, with 9,230 runs at 46.85, including 30 hundreds and 31 fifties.

Kohli remains active in the ODI format. To date, he has scored 14,181 runs in 302 matches at an average of 57.88, including 51 centuries, second-most in ODI history. His last appearance came during India`s victorious ICC Champions Trophy campaign, where he made 218 runs in five matches.

Overall, across all formats, Kohli has amassed 27,599 runs at an average of 52.27, with 82 centuries and 143 half-centuries, placing him third on the all-time list and second among Indian batters.
