Earlier, the right-hander was picked as one of the three nominees for the award, along with South Africa`s Wiaan Mulder and England skipper Ben Stokes.
Gill, in his first captaincy assignment in the traditional format of the game, led India to a series draw against the `Three Lions`.
While enjoying the rich vein of form, the 25-year-old broke several batting records during the five-match Test series against the Englishmen.
Having played all five Test matches, the right-hander accumulated 754 runs, with four centuries, including a double ton. He also surpassed legendary Sunil Gavaskar`s record of 732 runs to become the Indian captain to score the most runs in a five-match Test series.
His tally is also the second best after Sir Donald Bradman`s record of 810 runs in the all-time list of captains. Following his impressive run in the five-match Test series against England, legendary Team India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on him.
“His thought process was good, and that reflected in his footwork as well. His footwork was precise and he respected a good ball, his front foot defence was solid as well,” said Tendulkar.
“Captaincy I feel it has a lot to do with how bowlers are bowling, how disciplined they are and how much they stick to the plan even if things don`t go according to your plan sometimes. Since it is important to not get tensed and change your plans completely,” he added.
The right-hander is also in contention to open the innings for the `Men in Blue` in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
There are several other opening batsmen waiting to secure the top spot, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan.
Additionally, there are speculations of Team India`s think tank planning to appoint Gill as the vice-captain of India`s T20I team.
