Asia Cup: Pakistan cricket chief uses Ronaldo video to signal jet-downing gesture

Pakistan Cricket Board president Mohsin Naqvi repeated Haris Rauf’s controversial gestures from the India vs Pakistan Super 4 match in the Asia Cup 2025. Naqvi, who is also the head of the Asian Cricket Council, used a video of Cristiano Ronaldo and insinuated the fighter-jet falling gesture on X.

Naqvi took to X on Wednesday evening during India’s match against Bangladesh and added fuel to the fire once again. The ACC head, who is responsible for managing the logistics of the tournament in Dubai, repeated the gestures of Haris Rauf, which have already drawn intense criticism on social media. Naqvi, on Wednesday, furthered Pakistan’s uncorroborated claim of downing six Indian jets during the border escalations between the two countries. India and Pakistan exchanged hostilities across each other’s borders in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. The Indian government launched Operation Sindoor to target the terror camps in the LoC and across the border.

It all began on Sunday when Haris Rauf was trolled by a section of Indian fans in the Dubai stadium. Chants of “Kohli, Kohli” were heard as Indian fans seemingly referred to Haris getting clobbered by Virat Kohli in the 2022 T20 World Cup match in Melbourne. Haris first brushed off his ear, signalling indifference, before later gesturing provocatively, mimicking a fighter jet going down.

Haris also repeated the gesture while celebrating Sanju Samson’s wicket during Pakistan’s unsuccessful defence of 171 runs.

Asia Cup: Drama in India vs Pakistan

India and Pakistan has had on and off-field drama in both fixtures of the Asia Cup 2025. In the first game, Pakistan boycotted the post-match presentation ceremony after India refused to shake hands at the end of the game. The lack of gesture angered the Pakistan camp, who threatened to pull out of the tournament.

In the Super 4 game, Pakistan came in with a lot of fire in their belly, but still got outclassed by the partnership of Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. After getting battered by the belligerent partnership, Haris Rauf opted to provoke the Indian fans with the jet falling gesture.

Haris found a prompt reply from Arshdeep Singh at the end of the match, who mocked back the Pakistani fans in the stadium.
