He said, “The situation in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas is being closely monitored in view of heavy rains and landslides. We are committed to provide all possible assistance to the affected people,” he said.

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan also said that he was “suffering from the tragic loss of life in the Bridge Missap in Darjeeling”, and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

Torrential rains across the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal have provoked widespread devastation, causing a large -scale landslide, killing at least 14 people and cutting several villages in the region.

One of the major landslides, which came near Mirik-Sukhpokhari The road in the Darjeeling subdivision was washed away into the houses and disrupted the movement of vehicles, separating the communication link with the near Hamlets.

Rescue and relief operations were going on by local administration, police and disaster response teams.

News agency PTI quoted district officials as saying that villages like Bishanulal Gon, Ward 3 Lake Side, and Jasbir Gone was the worst affected, and six deaths were reported from the region. Another person died in a tea property.

Many houses and tea garden quarters were allegedly damaged or buried under the rubble.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is related to the situation

In a long X post, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she was “deeply concerned” and “worried” over the situation prevalent in North and South Bengal due to heavy and continuous rains.

He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased as he shocked the loss of life due to rain and floods in the state.

Banerjee said that she would “send all support families immediately” and she is monitoring the situation since last night “.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that he held a virtual meeting with Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, North Bengal DMS and SPS.

Express services arranged for those trapped people

In view of heavy rains in the Darjeeling hills, officials have arranged for three special super express services in Kolkata in Siliguri from North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC), which have managed to reach Siliguri.

For today, the time for services at 5.30 pm (tickets can be booked online), 6 pm and 7 pm (ticket offline can be obtained from TNCBT counter).

If needed, more buses will be arranged, he said.

Imd alert for more rain

Even heavy rains continue in Darjeeling and adjoining areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for very heavy rainfall on sub-Himalayan West Bengal including Darjeeling and Kalimpong till 6 October.

The department has also warned of possible landslides and road obstacles due to saturated soil and steep area.

Meanwhile, the district officials have set up temporary relief camps and collected medical teams in coordination with local NGOs to provide food and shelter to the displaced families.
