Kane Williamson joins Durban’s Super Giants for SA20 2025, replaces Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam

Kane Williamson has rejoined Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) for the upcoming SA20 2025–26 season, replacing Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam in a major squad reshuffle ahead of the tournament. The New Zealand captain’s return brings experience and stability to DSG’s batting lineup as the franchise looks to recover from a disappointing previous campaign.

Taijul Islam was signed by DSG during the September mega auction for ZAR 500,000 (approximately USD 28,858) and was set to become the first Bangladeshi player to feature in the SA20. However, the management opted to bring back Williamson, prioritising batting depth and leadership ahead of the new season.

Williamson previously represented the Super Giants during the 2025 season, where he impressed with 233 runs in eight matches at an average of 46.60 and a strike rate of 118.88, emerging as one of the team’s most reliable performers. Despite his efforts, DSG endured a poor campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table.

Earlier on November 2, Williamson announced his retirement from T20 internationals, ending a distinguished 13-year career in the format. He amassed 2,575 runs in 93 matches at an average of 33.4 and a strike rate of 123.1, including 18 half-centuries.

DSG BOLSTERED BY WILLIAMSON’S RETURN

Williamson’s return is expected to add balance and composure to a side that struggled for consistency last season. Known for his adaptability across formats, his presence strengthens the top order and provides valuable leadership experience—qualities coach Lance Klusener will look to harness.

Meanwhile, Taijul Islam’s omission means Bangladesh will continue to wait for its first representative in the SA20. His exclusion is understood to be a strategic move based on overseas player limits and squad composition.

The SA20 2025–26 season begins on December 26, with Durban’s Super Giants opening their campaign against MI Cape Town at Newlands. With Williamson back, DSG will be aiming for a stronger season and a potential playoff push.
