KL Rahul, Washington Sundar take India to 37 at Stumps on Day 1

In the first Test match against South Africa, Team India concluded Day 1 with the score of 37 runs for the loss of just one wicket at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

India is currently trailing by 122 runs. 

KL Rahul and Washington Sundar stayed unbeaten at the crease. Facing 59 balls, Rahul garnered 13 runs, including two boundaries. On the other hand, Sundar has so far managed to score six runs off 38 deliveries without smashing any boundaries or maximums.

The duo will resume Day 2 with the score of 37 runs for the loss of one wicket in 20 overs.

Earlier in the day, after bowling out South Africa for 159 runs, Team India lost the wicket of its opening batsman, Yashasvi Jaiswal, on 12 runs. Facing 27 balls, the left-hander had smashed three boundaries before returning to the pavilion.

South Africa`s Marco Jansen tasted success in getting an early breakthrough for the side. Bowling six balls, he claimed one wicket by conceding 11 runs. Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj bowled five overs each. In his spell, Mulder was smashed for 15 runs, whereas Maharaj gave away eight runs.

Corbin Bosch conceded one run in three overs while Simon Harmer bowled one over and gave away a single run.

Earlier in the match, the hosts bowled out South Africa for just 159 runs in 55 overs.

Team India`s lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the architect with the ball. Bowling 14 overs, he conceded 27 runs and claimed five wickets. This also helped him register his 16th five-wicket haul in the longest format of the game.

Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton opened the innings for South Africa. Facing 48 balls, Markram scored 31 runs, including five boundaries and a maximum.

Rickelton accumulated 23 runs off 22 balls, with the help of four boundaries.

Along with Bumrah, pacer Mohammed Siraj and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with the ball. Bowling a total of 12 overs, Siraj claimed two wickets for 47 runs, whereas Kuldeep, too, registered two scalps and was smashed for 36 runs in 14 overs.

Axar Patel picked up one wicket by conceding 21 runs in six overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Sundar went wicketless in South Africa`s first innings of the first Test match. Bowling eight overs, Jadeja gave away 13 runs, and Sundar conceded just three runs in one over.
