IND vs SA, Kolkata Test: Injury scare for India as Shubman Gill retired hurt due to neck strain

India suffered an early setback on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test as captain Shubman Gill walked off the field after developing a neck strain, bringing an abrupt end to his short stay at the crease. Gill, who came in after the dismissal of Washington Sundar in the 35th over, looked composed at the start. He defended his first two deliveries from Simon Harmer before playing a well-timed sweep over square leg for four. The shot was executed with control and confidence, but the mood shifted immediately.

As he got up from the sweep, Gill appeared in discomfort. He removed his helmet and placed his hand on the left side of his neck, clearly struggling with stiffness. He paused for a moment before calling for the physio. After a quick on-field assessment, India decided not to take any risks with their captain. A replacement batter was called, and Gill began a slow walk back towards the pavilion.

The crowd, which had only just welcomed him with loud cheers, fell silent in concern. Their disappointment soon turned into excitement when Rishabh Pant made his way out to bat for the first time since the Oval Test.

There was noticeable movement around the Indian dressing room as medical staff and support personnel moved in and out to attend to the situation. Gill headed straight inside for treatment while the team regrouped in the middle.

His exit briefly disrupted India’s early momentum at a stage when the hosts were looking to settle in. At the time of his departure, India were 79 for 2, and the tension around the next few overs increased as the side adjusted to both the loss of a batter and the injury concern surrounding their captain.
