Opposition to protest on SIR after one-day adjournment India News

Lok Sabha leader and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after attending the session during the winter session of Parliament in New Delhi on Monday.

Parliament Winter Session 2025 Live Updates: Opposition parties are set to launch protests from Tuesday, the second day of the winter session of Parliament, over their demands to hold a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This comes after the uproar in the House on the first day of the winter session, which was marked by adjournment as the opposition also staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha demanding a debate on the SIR. The government said it was not against the discussion but no deadline could be set.

On the first day of the winter session of Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced two new bills, which have provisions to reintroduce duty on ‘sin goods’ like tobacco, pan masala and related products. These bills were introduced before the expiry of the scheduled phase of GST compensation cess imposed on them.

Other economic and financial bills on the government’s agenda for this session of Parliament include the Atomic Energy Bill 2025, which seeks to allow private investment in the nuclear power generation sector.

Meanwhile, opposition MPs are set to raise several other issues like equality, income, Red Fort blast, Delhi pollution and foreign policy. The winter session of Parliament will continue till December 19.

Adjournment and uproar on SIR

The opposition repeatedly gathered at the well of the House and raised slogans demanding a debate on the SIR, following which Speaker Om Birla cautioned them against lowering the dignity of the House and urged them not to disrupt the proceedings. He said that it is not right to bring placards into the House in a planned manner and disrupt the House. However, when the opposition did not back down, the proceedings of the House were adjourned till 12 noon.

As the disruption continued, the House was adjourned twice before being adjourned for the day around 2.20 pm.

Following opposition’s opposition to discussion on SIR, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said in the Rajya Sabha that the demand for discussion on SIR is under consideration of the government as he asked the opposition not to put a deadline condition for discussion on SIR, election reforms. “It has not been ruled out,” he said.

What did PM Modi say

Before the start of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the media at the Parliament House complex and attacked the opposition, accusing them of turning Parliament into a “practice field” for elections or an outlet to express frustration after defeat, and offered them tips to bring positivity into politics. He said that Parliament is not a drama but a place for giving speeches.

Controversy between Congress MP regarding dog

On the other hand, Congress MP Renuka Chaudhary created a ruckus when she reached Parliament carrying a rescued stray in her car. When some MPs of the ruling party accused him of doing drama, the former Union Minister hit back and said, “People sitting inside bite, dogs do not bite.”

Chaudhary said she had picked up the stray animal during the day and was taking it to the veterinarian. He also claimed that the government does not like animals and questioned the objections raised by ruling party MPs, saying there is no law against saving stray dogs.
