After years of demand from commuters and travelers in coastal Karnataka, a major upgrade of train connectivity between Bengaluru and Mangaluru is finally on the horizon. The much-awaited Vande Bharat Express is expected to commence operations on this important route soon, which will dramatically reduce travel time and improve comfort for passengers traveling between the state capital and the coast.
The announcement has created excitement across Karnataka, especially among frequent travelers who currently spend about half a day traveling to the Western Ghats.
Travel time will decline rapidly
Currently, most express and mail trains take around 9 to 10 hours to travel between Bengaluru and Mangaluru depending on the stops and terrain conditions. With the commencement of Vande Bharat Express, this journey is expected to be completed in about 5 hours.
This reduction in travel time is being seen as a game changer for both business and leisure travellers. Faster journeys could make same-day return journeys more viable and reduce reliance on road travel through the ghat section.
Routes and districts that will benefit
The proposed Vande Bharat service is expected to benefit several major districts along the route. Apart from Bengaluru and Mangaluru, the improved connectivity will extend to Tumakuru and Hassan, both of which are located along the railway corridor.
The service is also expected to be particularly useful for devotees traveling to major pilgrimage sites in coastal Karnataka, providing a faster and more comfortable option than the existing train services.
Electrification of ghat section near completion
The launch of Vande Bharat Express coincides with the completion of electrification work in the challenging ghat section between Sakleshpura and Subramanya Road. This stretch, covering a distance of about 55 km, has long been a hindrance for fast rail services due to difficult terrain and engineering hurdles.
According to Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna, electrification of this section is now in its final stages. Once the work is completed, it will allow electric trains like Vande Bharat to operate seamlessly through the Western Ghats, paving the way for higher speeds and better reliability.
Environmental and operational benefits
As an electric semi high speed train, Vande Bharat Express is expected to provide speed as well as environmental benefits. Officials say electric traction helps reduce fuel consumption and reduces air pollution compared to diesel-powered services, which is in line with broader goals of green transportation.
Modern trainsets are designed to offer smoother rides, better safety systems and better onboard amenities, making long distance travel more comfortable for passengers.
Promotion of tourism and trade
Better rail connectivity between Bengaluru and Mangaluru is expected to give a big boost to tourism, especially in coastal destinations that attract tourists throughout the year. Shorter travel times could encourage more weekend trips and increase tourist numbers in the area.
Business travelers are also expected to benefit from the faster movement of people supporting stronger commercial ties between the coastal region and the state capital. Officials believe this service can play a role in improving overall economic exchanges between regions.
Big effort for railway infrastructure
The Vande Bharat Project is part of a larger effort to upgrade railway infrastructure across Karnataka. The central government has allocated around Rs 50,000 crore for railway development in these areas, including electrification, track upgradation and introduction of modern trains.
Minister V Somanna confirmed the progress of the project through a post on Instagram, saying that the long-standing demand of the people of Mangaluru region is nearing completion.
what comes next
Although the official launch date has not been announced yet, railway officials have indicated that the services may start soon after the electrification work is formally completed. Once operational, the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express is expected to redefine rail travel between the coast and the capital, offering speed, comfort and efficiency on one of the most important routes in Karnataka.
