Trump Greenland News Live Updates: US President Donald Trump left for Davos with the “largest” US delegation ever to the WEF in preparation for talks with European leaders on the Greenland issue. Meanwhile, Canada’s Mark Carney received a standing ovation at the summit. This annual forum is taking place amid major disruptions across the world. Trump’s visit comes as relations remain strained between the US and its European partners over his threat to annex Greenland and subsequent threats of tariffs.
What is WEF?
WEF is a think tank and event organizer based in the Swiss city of Geneva. Over time, the gathering has evolved into a forum that covers topics ranging from economic inequality and climate change to technology, global cooperation, competition, and conflict.
The summit takes place at a conference center in Davos, an alpine town in Switzerland known for its ski resorts and population of about 10,000. It has hosted the WEF Summit every January since 1971.
Who will participate in the Davos summit?
Organizers say a record number of about 400 senior political figures are attending. It includes more than 60 heads of state and government, as well as approximately 850 chairmen and chief executive officers of many of the world’s leading companies.
At the top of the program is Trump, who is scheduled to speak on Wednesday. Several Cabinet members and senior advisers are also attending, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Attendees include French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Organizers also say the event will be attended by 55 economy and finance ministers, 33 foreign affairs ministers, 34 trade, commerce and industry ministers and 11 central bank governors.
According to a Bloomberg News report, Trump is also looking to hold a meeting of his ‘peace board’ on Gaza during the annual event.
Trump vs European leaders on Greenland
A day before a trip to the World Economic Forum, Trump mocked European leaders as he prepared to take center stage on the future of the autonomous Danish territory.
However, Swiss ski resort leaders have united in response to Trump’s ‘America First’ stance. French President Emmanuel Macron promised to stand up against “bullys”, while the EU said it would “definitely” respond.
Trump argues that mineral-rich Greenland is vital to the security of the US and NATO against Russia and China.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Trump could push relations between the US and the EU “downwards”.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has tried to limit his country’s dependence on Washington after Trump suggested it should become the 51st US state, received a standing ovation in Davos for his stance.
