T20 World Cup: After Iceland, Uganda ready to replace Pakistan in tournament

The banter around Pakistan’s potential pull-out from the T20 World Cup has continued. After Iceland, now Uganda have offered to replace the team in the global tournament. The team’s official account took to X on Thursday, January 29, to joke about their interest in the tournament.

“If a T20 World Cup seat opens, Uganda is ready – packed and padded. Passports warm (not ice). No bakers leaving ovens or ships U-turning. Heat, noise, pressure? We’ll bring the bold kit,” Uganda cricket posted on X.

Pakistan are reportedly contemplating their stand on the T20 World Cup, to show solidarity towards Bangladesh, who boycotted the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh were denied a venue change request from India to Sri Lanka, which made them quit the 2026 edition of the competition.

Uganda are not the first team to troll Pakistan over their reported threat of pulling out from the World Cup. Earlier, another X account by the name of Iceland cricket joked that they were ready to replace Pakistan in the competition, but only if they were told in advance.

The tweet by Iceland cricket got over half a million impression, setting off a chain reaction. Banter continued as the account put up the rising prices of the flight tickets to Colombo, hoping for a reaction from the ICC.

The joke continued when Iceland pulled out of T20 World Cup as well, stating that none of their players played cricket full time and needed to focus on their current jobs.

“Our players are from all walks of life and cannot simply drop their occupations to fly halfway around the world to experience temperatures only normally felt in Finnish saunas. Our captain, a professional baker, needs to attend to his oven, our ship captain needs to steer his vessel, and our bankers need to go bankrupt (again). This is the harsh reality of cricket at the amateur level of the game,” the account said.

“Our loss is likely Uganda’s gain. We wish them well. Their kits cannot be missed unless you have epilepsy, in which case they are probably best avoided. The future is always ice, until it isn’t,” it added.

The T20 World Cup begins on February 7 and will not have the participation of Bangladesh for the first time in the competition’s history. The team has pulled out of the tournament after the International Cricket Council refused to switch the team’s venue from India to Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh had cited security concerns about travelling to India in the aftermath of the Mustafixur Rahman incident. However, ICC rejected their request, stating that the threat levels were not high enough to change the venues.
