Stock Market LIVE Updates: India’s stock market surged after a volatile start to the trading session today, a day after the worst budget day trading session in six years. The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex rose 1.17%, or 943.52 points, to 81,666.46, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 increased 1.06%, or 262.95 points, to 25,088.40. 14 of the 16 major sectors logged gains on the day. The broader small-caps and mid-caps rose 0.6% and 1%, respectively.
“After a sharp fall, the Nifty has seen a strong bounce, which is a normal market reaction. However, the broader trend remains weak,” Rupak De, senior technical analyst at LKP Securities, said in an emailed statement.
Budget 2026 impact on Sensex, Nifty
Sunday’s sell-off was triggered by the proposal to hike the securities transaction tax on derivatives, higher-than-expected gross borrowing for FY27 and the absence of cuts in capital gains tax or measures to attract foreign inflows.
“The impact on large institutional hedging strategies due to STT hike is likely to be limited,” said Anand Gupta, lead portfolio manager of Indian equities at Allianz Global Investors. “Historically, marginal increases in STT have not had a material impact on market participation, liquidity or hedging activity.”
