T20 World Cup Soft drinks controversy: DDCA breaks silence on viral video from Arun Jaitley Stadium

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Thursday issued a clarification after a video went viral on social media alleging that a soft drink vendor at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was seen refilling bottles with already poured out drinks during a recent match.

The video, recorded by a fan and widely shared on X (formerly Twitter), sparked concern among spectators and raised questions over hygiene and quality standards at the venue, particularly in light of the high prices charged for refreshments inside the stadium.

In an official statement, the DDCA said it had taken note of the circulating footage and clarified that the activity shown in the video was being misinterpreted. According to the association, the pouring seen in the clip was carried out by an authorised concessionaire operating at the stadium and was in line with event guidelines and established operational procedures.

The DDCA explained that the vendor was not refilling bottles for re-sale but was instead disposing of unused beverages as part of the waste segregation process. “In the instance shown in the video, the vendor, while segregating wet and dry waste, poured the unused beverage back into the bottle prior to disposal as part of the waste collection process,” the statement read. The association further added that the bottles were subsequently collected, segregated and processed in accordance with the venue’s waste management and recycling policy.

Reiterating its commitment to maintaining hygiene standards, the DDCA stated that strict cleanliness protocols are followed at all venues under its control. The concessionaire in question, the association noted, was serving Coca-Cola products in accordance with agreed commercial arrangements and operational standards.

The DDCA also emphasised that the bottles shown in the video were disposed of responsibly and were not reintroduced into circulation. The clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny of food and beverage practices at cricket stadiums, where fans have frequently voiced concerns over pricing and hygiene during matches.
