India posted a competitive 175 for 7 against Pakistan in their ICC T20 World Cup clash in Colombo on Sunday, surviving an extraordinary spin-heavy assault that saw Pakistan bowl 18 overs of spin — one of the most unusual bowling strategies seen in a World Cup innings.

The backbone of India’s innings was a blistering knock from opener Ishan Kishan, who smashed 77 off 40 balls with 10 fours and three sixes. Kishan’s fearless strokeplay ensured India stayed ahead in the powerplay, as he dominated Pakistan’s spinners and kept the scoring rate high despite the sluggish nature of the pitch.

However, the tone of the innings shifted sharply after Kishan was dismissed by Saim Ayub, who finished with outstanding figures of 4-0-25-3. Ayub’s spell included two overs in the powerplay and a crucial double-wicket burst later, dismissing Tilak Varma (25 off 24) and Hardik Pandya (0) in successive deliveries to halt India’s momentum.

Pakistan’s spin trio of Usman Tariq (4-0-24-1) and Mohammad Nawaz (4-0-28-0) also tightened the screws, with their combined eight overs conceding just 52 runs, leaving India’s middle order struggling to accelerate. Suryakumar Yadav scored 32 off 29, while Shivam Dube added 27 off 17 before being run out.

Despite late cameos from Dube and Rinku Singh (11 not out off 4), India fell short of a potential 190-plus total, largely due to Pakistan’s squeeze after Kishan’s dismissal.

Pakistan, however, will be disappointed with the expensive spells from Shaheen Afridi (2-0-31-1), Abrar Ahmed (3-0-38-0) and Shadab Khan (1-0-17-0), which helped India reach a strong total.

With the pitch playing slow and India boasting a formidable spin attack of their own, Pakistan face a stiff chase, requiring their batters to produce a near-perfect effort to overhaul 176.

Tilak Varma played the supporting role, scoring a cautious 12 as Kishan took charge. The duo added 87 runs for the second wicket, steadying the innings after the early loss.

Kishan, however, appeared to suffer from cramps and required brief attention from the team physio due to discomfort in his right leg. He continued batting before eventually being bowled by Saim Ayub in the ninth over. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav then walked in and was on three at the end of the 10th over.

Earlier, Abhishek, who missed India’s previous match against Namibia due to a stomach bug, was removed by off-spinner Salman Ali Agha off the final ball of the first over. He was caught at mid-on by Shaheen Shah Afridi, marking his second duck of the tournament after being dismissed for zero against the USA.

Pakistan skipper Salman Agha wins the toss and elects to bowl first.  Both skippers after the toss:  Salman Agha: We want to bowl first. It looks a bit tacky, so we feel it will assist the bowlers for the first few overs so we want to use that. We are relaxed in our group and excited for this challenge. Bigger ground than SSC and the pitch is slower than SSC. Same team for us.  Suryakumar Yadav: Not at all, we were looking to bat first. We won last two games defending so we don’t want to change it. It is an occasion, it’s a high-stake game. This sport teaches you a lot of things, any side can win the game on a given day. Two changes. Abhishek Sharma comes in and Kuldeep Yadav is in for Arshdeep Singh.

India Playing 11: Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan(w), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah
