What is John Grisham`s novel about?
Rudy Baylor, a struggling law student in Memphis, dreams of becoming a successful “rainmaker” lawyer. When he takes on a case for a poor family whose insurance company, Great Benefit, denied lifesaving treatment for their son, he uncovers a corporate scheme to reject valid claims for profit. After the boy dies, Rudy battles the powerful insurer in court and wins a landmark 50.2 million dollar verdict. However, the company declares bankruptcy to avoid payment, leaving the family without compensation but exposing its corruption.
Parallelly, Rudy becomes involved with Kelly Riker, an abuse survivor. After a violent confrontation leads to her husband’s death, the couple faces threats and legal turmoil. Disillusioned by the justice system, Rudy ultimately leaves the law behind, choosing a quieter life away from courtrooms.
