Pakistan cricket has been hit by a fresh controversy following the team’s disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup. According to a report from Telecom Asia Sport, an unnamed member of Pakistan’s World Cup squad was fined after allegedly misbehaving with a female hotel staff member during the team’s stay in Sri Lanka.
The alleged incident is believed to have taken place in Kandy shortly before Pakistan’s final Super Eight clash against Sri Lanka during the tournament.
According to the report, the episode unfolded at the Golden Crown Hotel, where the Pakistan squad was staying. Sources told Telecom Asia Sport that a Pakistan World Cup squad player behaved inappropriately with a female housekeeping staff member at the hotel.
The situation reportedly escalated when the staff member raised an alarm and called for help. Other hotel employees intervened and the matter was subsequently reported to Pakistan team manager Naveed Cheema.
Senior officials at the Golden Crown Hotel reportedly wanted strong action taken against the player. However, the issue was settled internally after Cheema apologised to the hotel management on behalf of the cricketer and imposed a fine for the misconduct.
PLAYER COULD FACE FURTHER ACTION
While the identity of the player has not been revealed, the matter may not be fully closed. According to the report, the individual could face further scrutiny once the squad returns home.
The report suggested that the player could be summoned before the disciplinary committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board, which may decide whether additional punishment is required.
The controversy surfaced soon after Pakistan’s disappointing campaign in the tournament. The side failed to qualify for the semifinals after missing out on net run-rate despite defeating Sri Lanka by five runs in their final Super Eight match.
Pakistan’s overall performance in the tournament drew criticism as the team struggled to maintain consistency during the crucial Super Eight stage. The latest off-field incident has added to the scrutiny surrounding the team following their early exit from the competition.
