T20 World Cup, IND vs ENG: Jacob Bethell lights up Wankhede with 45-ball century in semifinal against India

Jacob Bethell lit up the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai with a sensational 45-ball century in the T20 World Cup semifinal against India on Thursday, March 8. Chasing a massive target of 254, the left-handed batter kept England in the hunt with his maiden T20I century, also his first in the format.

However, his effort went in vain as England lost by seven runs and crashed out of the tournament. Bethell scored 105 off 48 balls, smashing eight fours and seven sixes, but England could only manage 246 for seven at the end of their 20 overs.

Bethell recorded the joint-fastest fifty in T20 World Cup knockout history, reaching the milestone in just 19 balls and equalling the record set by New Zealand’s Finn Allen in Wednesday’s first semifinal against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He continued his onslaught to reach his hundred, demonstrating why he is considered one of the best young batters in the game.

Walking to the crease in the fifth over, Jacks got off the mark with a six off his second ball against Jasprit Bumrah. He immediately took on Varun Chakravarthy in his first over, welcoming him with three successive sixes, setting the tone for a remarkable innings.
