Filmmaker Karan Johar has firmly put an end to ongoing speculation around a sequel to his iconic family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Speaking candidly about his future plans, Johar clarified that there is no sequel or spin-off to the beloved film in the works. He also dismissed any developments around a derivative of his ambitious project, Takht.
Karan Johar talks about a K3G sequel
Talking about his plans on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Season 3, produced by Gautam Thakker Films, Karan Johar says, “I am glad that I have this platform and I am glad I am chatting with you to say that there is no Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 and no derivative of Takht being made,” Johar said.
Explaining his decision, the director emphasised the emotional legacy attached to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which released in 2001 and went on to become a cultural phenomenon across generations.
“I would never make a K3G 2… what K3G has in abundance is nostalgia. There are generations that have grown up watching the film, for what they loved, what they didn’t, and what they cried about. I am very grateful to the universe that I got to make a film that still lives on,” he added
Karan Johar further noted that revisiting such an iconic project could risk diluting its legacy. “I would never mess with that nostalgia and the love it has,” he stated.
Over the years, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham has remained one of Bollywood’s most celebrated films, known for its ensemble cast, memorable music, and emotional storytelling. Johar’s latest remarks reaffirm his intent to preserve the film’s legacy rather than revisit it with a sequel.
Karan Johar calls actors “nobodies”
“In a recent interview, Johar described talent management as a thankless job. He said, “Every two years, people are shifting from one agency to another because they are so insecure that they feel we are time-bound. Nobody is loyal in this business; actors just keep hopping and skipping. So you put two years of your life into a talent and they suddenly move somewhere else — and then they don`t like it there and want to come back. This is a vicious circle.”
Johar went on to call artistes ‘nobodies.’ “Just commission on artists is going to give you nothing because artists are nobodies. They are absolutely nobodies, voh kisi ke nahi hain,” he said. He stated that artist management is all about “handling people, egos, insecurities, and it’s not easy.”
It should be noted that his comments come months after Janhvi Kapoor left his DCAA and moved to Collective Artist Network. For now, Karan’s agency handles actors like Rohit Saraf, Sara Ali Khan, Shanaya Kapoor, and Rasha Thadani, among others.
