Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other cabinet ministers in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing budget session of Parliament in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Lok Sabha at 2 pm on Monday during the ongoing Budget session of Parliament, outlining key aspects of the growing conflict in West Asia and India’s position on the issue. The address comes after the government reviewed the impact of the crisis on the country’s economy, supply chains and essential commodities and discussed steps to minimize disruptions to citizens and businesses.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet Secretary recently gave a detailed presentation on the emerging global situation and the mitigation measures taken so far as well as those being planned by various ministries and departments of the Government of India.

The review covered the expected impact across a range of sectors including agriculture, fertiliser, food security, petroleum, power, MSMEs, exporters, shipping, trade, finance and supply chain. The officials also examined the broader macroeconomic outlook and discussed further steps to safeguard India’s economic stability.

The Government assessed that the ongoing conflict in West Asia could have significant short, medium and long-term impacts on the global economy. Its potential impact on India was assessed and both immediate and long-term countermeasures were discussed.

Iran-US war

The conflict in West Asia has intensified as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to rise, raising concerns over global energy supplies and regional stability.

US President Donald Trump warned that the United States would “destroy” Iran’s power plants if Tehran does not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. In response, Iran said that any such attack would lead to attacks on US and Israeli energy and infrastructure assets.

Meanwhile, Iranian missiles struck two communities in southern Israel late Saturday, damaging buildings and injuring dozens in areas close to Israel’s main nuclear research center.

The death toll from the war has reached over 1,500 in Iran and 1,000 in Lebanon, while 15 and 13 US military personnel are reported killed in Israel, respectively. Many civilians have also been killed in incidents on land and at sea in the Gulf region, while millions of people in Lebanon and Iran have been displaced by fighting.

Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu raised the issue of a Punjab Star Warehousing Corporation official allegedly committing suicide under pressure from AAP minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.

“I appreciate that Congress, Akali Dal and BJP have come together to protest on this matter,” he said. “Justice needs to be given,” he said. “Mafia rule is being run in Punjab under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann. I urge all the MPs of Punjab to demand a central inquiry.”

Bhullar has resigned from the post of Transport and Jail Minister in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government after CM Mann asked for his resignation. Bhullar said that he has taken this decision for a fair investigation of the case.

On Friday, a district manager of Punjab State Warehousing Corporation (PSWC) committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance at his residence in Amritsar. Before his death, a video of the officer had surfaced on social media, in which he had claimed that he had taken this step out of fear of Bhullar.
