Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has called for patience with the franchise’s new-look squad, urging fans and stakeholders to ease pressure on youngsters as CSK navigate a clear transition phase in IPL 2026. With a fresh core stepping in, Gaikwad made it clear that growth, not instant results, is the priority.
That message comes on the back of a reality check against Rajasthan Royals, whereIPL-2026-rr-vs-csk-memes-chennai-super-kings-ms-dhoni-ruturaj-gaikwad-2889341-2026-03-30″ target=”_blank”> CSK’s young batting unit was blown away in their season opener in Guwahati. Speaking ahead of their clash against Punjab Kings, Gaikwad stressed the need to allow young players time and freedom to settle into the demands of the league.
RR vs CSK, IPL 2026: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
“Looking at this team now, it is a very young team. The excitement is there but at the same time, there’s a lot of difference between experienced players and inexperienced players. So, you have to allow them to make mistakes. You have to allow them to express themselves. You have to make sure that they are in a good Headspace,” Gaikwad said in the pre-match press conference.
“I mean, [there’s pressure to perform] from families, from the media, from team members, everyone [in the IPL],” Gaikwad said. “So to cope with that and to just get into that IPL performance mode, sometimes it takes time,” he added.
The challenge for CSK was laid bare in that opening game. Bowled out for just 127, they were never in control after being reduced to 51 for 5 inside 7.2 overs, with Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger ripping through the top order. The chase was even more one-sided, as RR cruised home in just 12.1 overs, powered by a stunning 15-ball 52 from teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
For CSK, it was a reminder of the gap between promise and performance. Five debutants, including Kartik Sharma, were handed opportunities, but the step up proved challenging. The absence of icons like MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina only amplified the spotlight on the new faces.
HOW CSK HAVE SHIFTED TO YOUTH
This CSK side looks very different from the one that thrived on experience for over a decade. The franchise has gradually moved on from its old guard, including Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Dwayne Bravo, and is now investing heavily in youth.
The arrivals of players like Dewald Brevis, Urvil Patel and Ayush Mhatre, along with the high-profile acquisition of Sanju Samson, signal a long-term rebuild.
The early signs may be uneven, but the intent is clear. CSK is no longer just about experience and certainty. They are about potential, risk, and a new generation finding its feet.
“You try and share your experience with them, [but] it should not make them cautious. It should not make them go into a negative frame of mind. Making their debut for a franchise like CSK – it’s a huge achievement for them. So, the first thing is to enjoy it, embrace it and give your best, whatever it is there. If it happens, well and good; even if it does not happen, it is still a long journey for them. They’re still at the start of their careers. It’s just about managing what their strengths are, and just navigating them to be fearless and not have any doubts about it.” Gaikwad said.
And as Gaikwad made clear, that journey will come with mistakes. The key, for CSK, is to let those mistakes happen without letting the pressure define the players.
