A man rides his motorcycle past a roadside billboard as Pakistan prepares to host the US and Iran for peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, April 10, 2026.

US-Iran war news live: Iran adopted a cautious stance as soon as its delegation reached Pakistan late on Friday night, making it clear that talks are on the table, but trust is not. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is leading the delegation, said, “Our experience in negotiations with the Americans has always been one of failure and non-promises.” From the US side, Vice President JD Vance is en route to Islamabad and will be joined by Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Despite the diplomacy unfolding, US President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning, saying keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is a top priority and insisting Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.

In a post on Truth Social, he wrote, “The Iranians do not realize that they have no cards except short-term extortion of the world using international waterways. The only reason they are alive today is to negotiate!”

Pakistan says ‘make or break’ moment

By hosting the talks, Pakistan has acknowledged that the road ahead is difficult. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the talks as entering a decisive phase.

“A temporary ceasefire has been announced, but now an even more difficult phase lies ahead: the phase of achieving a permanent ceasefire, the phase of resolving complex issues through dialogue,” Sharif was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

“This is the phase that is called the English equivalent of ‘make or break,'” he said.

The Iranian delegation includes Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, defense and security officials, economic policy makers and lawmakers.

“They attacked us twice in the middle of the talks. We have goodwill but no trust,” Ghalibaf said, referring to earlier attacks during ongoing talks, news agency ANI reported.

In a poignant moment, the speaker also carried photographs of Minab’s victims on his official flight.

However, Tehran has reiterated that the previously stated pre-conditions must be met. Officials have warned that failure to do so could completely derail the talks.

The Islamabad talks are taking place against the backdrop of a fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran – which Tehran says also includes a halt to Israeli operations in Lebanon. Whereas Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump have denied the existence of any such arrangement.

Lebanese authorities report that more than 1,950 people have been killed in recent weeks of fighting, with more than 350 deaths recorded in a single day shortly after the ceasefire came into effect, AFP reports.

The Islamabad meeting is seen as an important effort to transform this temporary pause into a more durable peace framework and end the long-running Middle East conflict.
