How MS Dhoni’s success mantra became key to Ayush Mhatre’s U-19 World Cup win

Young Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ayush Mhatre has opened up about the invaluable guidance he received from legendary skipper MS Dhoni, highlighting how the veteran’s advice shaped his leadership approach during his stint as India’s U-19 captain.

Mhatre recently led India to a title-winning campaign at the U-19 World Cup and recalled his interactions with Dhoni during his time with CSK in the IPL 2025 season, describing them as pivotal to his development as a young leader.

In a video shared by the Indian Premier League on April 14, the 18-year-old batting sensation spoke about the ‘life-changing’ advice he received during his time in the Chennai Super Kings camp.

Before leading India in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Mhatre spent considerable time in the CSK setup, where he approached Dhoni to understand how to handle the pressure of captaincy at the highest level.

Recalling the interaction, Mhatre said: “I spoke to him about captaincy after the IPL as it was my first time leading. He advised me to stay calm on the ground and never take decisions when angry. There will be frustrating moments, especially during opposition partnerships, but if you stay calm and let that phase pass, you can make better decisions.”

Mhatre’s performances in the tournament reflected the impact of that advice, as he led India to a record-extending sixth U-19 World Cup title with a dominant 100-run win over England in the final on February 6, 2026.

Leading from the front, he delivered in key moments, scoring 62 in a record semi-final chase against Afghanistan and a vital 53 in the final, supporting Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s stunning 175.

With the ball, Mhatre also impressed, picking up seven wickets at an average of 12.42, including a three-wicket haul against Pakistan.

Under his leadership, India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament held across Zimbabwe and Namibia, showcasing composure and tactical clarity, hallmarks often associated with Dhoni’s captaincy style.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni continues to be a key figure in the Chennai Super Kings setup, mentoring young players despite ongoing fitness concerns. The veteran has not featured on the field in the ongoing IPL season due to injury, but his presence off the field remains influential.

With CSK struggling early in the season, managing just one win in four matches, fans will be hoping for Dhoni’s return in the upcoming clash.
