US-Iran war live: Iran and the US tested an already fragile ceasefire as both countries shelled each other in the vital waterway of the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours. What was the reason for the attacks?
It all started when Trump said on Monday that the US would begin guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz, an effort he dubbed “Project Freedom.”
“For the well-being of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these countries that we will safely escort their vessels out of these restricted waterways, so they can go about their business freely and efficiently,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Subsequently, Iran warned that “any foreign military forces, especially aggressor US forces… will be attacked” if they try to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz.

Echoing Trump’s statements, US Central Command chief Admiral Bradley Cooper also declined to weigh in on whether the nearly month-long ceasefire would continue.
“I won’t go into the details of whether the ceasefire is over or not,” Admiral Bradley Cooper, head of US Central Command, told reporters on Monday, CNN reported. “I think the main thing for us is that we are there only as a defensive force and giving a very thick layer of defense to commercial shipping to allow them to go out of the (Persian Gulf),”
According to Cooper, cited by CNN, Iran reportedly launched multiple cruise missiles, drones and small boats targeting US Navy ships as well as commercial vessels under US protection. In response, the US military said it destroyed six small Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. However, Iranian state media rejected claims that any boats were sunk. Trump later said that the US had actually shot down seven small Iranian boats.
Two American-flagged merchant ships have successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz and Navy guided missile destroyers are helping restore shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf, the US military said on Monday. Iran denied these reports, saying that no US-flagged merchantmen crossed the Strait of Hormuz.
The US also denied Iran’s claim that its navy had fired warning shots at US Navy destroyers operating near the Strait of Hormuz. “No US Navy ships have been attacked,” CentCom said in a post on Twitter.
Is the Middle East on fire again?
The Middle East, which was bearing the brunt of the US-Iran war, has once again come under fire due to increasing hostility between the two countries. The UAE said on Monday that it had been attacked by Iran for the first time since the ceasefire came into force in early April. The Gulf country condemned the Iranian attacks, saying its air defenses targeted 19 Iranian missiles and drones.
Three Indians were also injured after the drone strike caused a “major fire” in the Fujairah oil industry zone. According to Reuters, the UAE also accused Iran of targeting an empty crude oil tanker owned by ADNOC with a drone as it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz. ADNOC’s maritime logistics unit said the Barak ship was empty at the time of the attack and no injuries were reported.
Iran later clarified that it had no premeditated plans to target oil facilities in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, state television quoted a military official as saying.
Oman also said a residential building housing staff was targeted on Monday, although it did not provide details of the incident.
Iran has sent a 14-point peace proposal to America
Iran has put forward a 14-point peace proposal to the United States through Pakistan. While the US suggested a two-month ceasefire; Iran wants a full solution within 30 days.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday in response to the ongoing US Project Freedom and recent attacks on the UAE that incidents in the Strait of Hormuz area highlight the limitations of military approaches to political disputes.
“The events in Hormuz make clear that there is no military solution to a political crisis,” he said in a post on X.
