Iran war live: Trump announces a “great deal” to end the war with Iran and says he hopes to see the deal signed in Europe.
iran war live: US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States and Iran could sign a peace deal later this week, a move that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. However, Iran said it had not yet taken a final decision on the proposed deal.
If finalized, the agreement would be the biggest diplomatic step yet toward ending the three-month conflict that has killed thousands of people and sent global energy prices soaring.
Trump says ‘great’ Iran deal could be signed ‘very soon’
Trump announced a “great deal” to end the war with Iran and said he expected the deal to be signed, possibly in Europe later this week.
“We have made a major war deal with Iran,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Both sides, “subject to finalizing the documents, should be completed in the next few days, possibly signing in Europe. It’s a very good thing.”
Trump said he believed Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had personally approved the deal, and said Iran had accepted it because he had “taken the lead.”
He also said the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments, which Iran claims to be closed, would reopen after the deal is signed.
Iran says final decision on deal has not been taken yet
Iranian media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai as saying that most of the draft text being negotiated has been completed, but Iran will not abandon its red lines.
“We have not reached a final conclusion on this matter,” he said. “This is a very important issue which is currently being reviewed by the relevant decision-making bodies.”
India condemns attacks on ships in which Indian sailors died
India on Thursday said three merchant ships carrying Indian crew members were attacked by US forces off the coast of Oman over the past four days, resulting in the death of three Indian nationals. New Delhi has formally protested to the United States over the incidents.
“We attach high importance to the welfare and well-being of our maritime community. When this particular attack on the Setebello ship took place, we lodged a strong protest with the US side,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at an inter-ministerial media briefing.
He said, “We summoned the US chargé d’affaires and conveyed to him our deep concern over the ongoing spate of attacks. We also registered our strong protest.”
Jaiswal said the attacks “must stop”.
“We further reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and that there should be unimpeded access through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law,” he said.

US-Iran war live: Report says Iran delayed Khamenei’s funeral
US-Iran war live: The state funeral of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, killed in US-Israel strikes on the first day of the war, has been postponed until late June or early July, Tehran’s mayor said on Thursday.
Iran had previously announced plans to hold the three-day celebrations in the early days of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, which would have placed it in early June.
However, Mayor Alireza Zakani said in a statement carried by Fars news agency that the event had been delayed until after the first 10 days of Muharram.
Khamenei’s funeral is now expected to take place during the second 10 days of Muharram between June 26 and July 5. Tehran officials had earlier said they expected about 20 million people to attend.

US-Iran war live: The conflict has escalated in recent days despite a fragile ceasefire that came into effect in early April.
Trump ordered new strikes around the Strait of Hormuz over two days this week, after a US Apache helicopter was shot down. Meanwhile, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on US military targets across the region.
Although Trump previously vowed to “hit the Islamic Republic very hard” and threatened to take control of its oil infrastructure, he later backed away from proposed military action against Iran.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said a deal could be signed in Europe this weekend and that Vice President J.D. Vance would be in attendance if it moves forward. He also said that Iran’s supreme leader has approved the deal.
