US-Iran war LIVE: Pope Leo hopes US-Iran peace deal will bring definitive end to war

US-Iran war live: Pope Leo XIV welcomed an agreement between Iran and the US to reach a peace deal, expressing hope it will provide a definitive end to the war.

“There are still many issues to be decided, but it is always better to do so through dialogue and negotiation rather than returning to a state of war,” the pontiff said Tuesday, addressing reporters from his summer residence in Castell Gandolfo near Rome.

The US and Iran are preparing to formally sign an interim peace deal in Switzerland on Friday. Still, questions remain over how soon the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened.

Pope Leo hopes that after the signing, “we can move forward in a big way to eliminate nuclear weapons, seek the well-being of all people, and find ways to solve the economic and social problems that arise as a result.”

US-Iran war LIVE: US-Iran ceasefire agreement to be made public soon, permanent ceasefire still awaits negotiations

US-Iran war live: Details of the US and Iran’s interim agreement to end the war in the Middle East began to emerge on Tuesday, with US President Donald Trump saying it would rule out nuclear weapons for Tehran and a US official saying it allows it to sell oil to Iran if signed.

The memorandum of understanding signed this week, although not yet made public, extends a weak ceasefire declared in April by 60 days to allow the warring countries to negotiate a permanent cease-fire.

Under the agreement, the US will end its blockade of Iran’s ports, while Tehran will restore passage of oil tankers and other maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which it has effectively blocked since the US and Israel launched the attack on February 28.

The US President said the agreement clearly states that Tehran will not have nuclear weapons and the full text will be made public in a formal setting in a few days.

US-Iran war live: Oil hits three-month low as Iran deal boosts supplies

US-Iran war live: Oil near three-month low on hopes that the US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz will bring a wave of supplies.

Brent was trading below $80 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was near $77 after falling 15% in four days in its longest losing streak this year. The interim agreement, to be signed on Friday, provides Tehran with sweeping financial incentives, including the right to immediately sell its oil.

Crude oil prices have fallen sharply in recent weeks as moves to end the war between Washington and Tehran appear to ease tensions in global energy markets. Manufacturers, shippers and traders are now assessing whether the agreement will prove sustainable, and how long it will take to seriously revive ship transit to the Hormuz chokepoint.

“Most traders still believe the U.S. naval operation will remain under escort for the first few weeks, and mine-sweeping ships will also be present, which will slow traffic flow,” said Dennis Kisler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial Securities Inc.
