US-Iran war LIVE: Israel could hinder US-Iran peace talks, US intel hints ahead of talks in Switzerland

US-Iran war LIVE: US President Donald Trump points his finger at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as they shake hands during a press conference after the meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, US on December 29, 2025.

US-Iran war live: Negotiators from the United States and Iran traveled to Switzerland on Saturday for discussions aimed at finalizing key aspects of their interim agreement to prevent war between the two countries. US Vice President JD Vance left for Switzerland on Saturday evening, while Iranian state television broadcast footage of the Tehran delegation arriving at the venue. The Iranian team is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and also includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

US-Iran peace talks in Switzerland

A new round of talks on the war in West Asia is set to begin on Sunday, with Iran’s negotiators arriving in the Swiss host city several hours before Vence.

Before leaving for Europe, Vance told reporters that he hoped “there will be progress on the nuclear issue, there will be progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. I think those are the two big things we’re going to focus on”.

The next round of discussions was originally scheduled for Friday in Switzerland, but was canceled at the last minute after Israel launched deadly attacks in Lebanon that killed four Israeli soldiers during fighting.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said the country’s delegation would “demand the implementation of the other side’s commitments” under the agreement.

“Otherwise, the entire understanding will be in jeopardy,” he said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Pakistan Prime Minister, Army Chief Munir will attend

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will also participate in technical-level discussions in Bergenstock, Switzerland, according to a statement from Sharif’s office.

In a statement issued after midnight, the PMO said, “The Prime Minister has left for Switzerland from Islamabad along with a high-level delegation.”

Trump’s Hormuz toll warning

While Washington and Tehran agreed to abide by a 60-day ceasefire during talks, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Saturday that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz.

Accusing Israel of committing “crimes” in Lebanon that have violated US commitments under the ceasefire, the IRGC warned that ships entering the strait could face danger. However, US Central Command said 55 commercial ships passed through the strait on Saturday, carrying more than 17 million barrels of oil to international markets.

In a social media post on Saturday, US President Donald Trump said ships would not be required to pay any toll to pass through the strait during or after the 60-day ceasefire unless the US decides to impose it if the peace process fails.

Trump suggested that the US could impose tolls on ships using the strait if negotiations do not lead to a peace agreement, describing it as “payment for services provided as a guardian angel to the countries of the Middle East”.
