Under the scheme, beneficiaries are provided financial assistance and government-built houses to improve housing access and standard of living. This scheme will be launched on July 20
As part of the pilot phase, at least 500 houses will be built in each assembly constituency. Depending on local demand and availability of land, this number may be increased to 1,000 houses in some constituencies.
The Telangana government has announced a major expansion of its flagship Indiramma Housing Scheme, extending it to the urban poor in Hyderabad. Under the new scheme, the state will construct 1 lakh low-income group (LIG) houses in phases for economically weaker families living within the Hyderabad Core Urban Area (CURE).
The decision marks a significant shift from the scheme’s initial focus on rural housing and aims to provide affordable homes close to where beneficiaries live and work.
What is Indiramma Awas Yojana?
Indiramma Housing Scheme is one of the flagship welfare programs of the Government of Telangana, designed to provide permanent housing to eligible homeless and low-income families. Under the scheme, beneficiaries are provided financial assistance and government-built houses to improve housing access and standard of living.
The government is already implementing the program in rural areas and is now extending its benefits to urban poor families in and around Hyderabad.
1 lakh affordable houses scheme
State Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the government has given administrative approval for the construction of 1 lakh LIG Indiramma houses within the CURE area.
The scheme is scheduled to be formally launched on July 20, after which the government will issue detailed guidelines covering eligibility criteria, application process, tender and construction.
The announcement is expected to benefit thousands of low-income families struggling with rising housing costs in urban areas in and around Hyderabad.
Pilot phase will start in all constituencies
The government plans to construct the houses during the financial year 2026-27. As part of the pilot phase, at least 500 houses will be built in each assembly constituency. Depending on local demand and availability of land, this number may be increased to 1,000 houses in some constituencies.
Why did the government change its strategy?
The Telangana government said the new housing model has been designed after learning from previous urban housing projects.
Earlier, many double-bedroom housing projects were built 30 to 40 km away from Hyderabad, making it difficult for beneficiaries to continue their jobs, access schools, health care facilities and public transport. As a result, many families either struggled to relocate or decided not to remain in the homes.
To avoid repeating those problems, the government is now planning to build new Indiramma houses on government land where the beneficiaries currently live. Officials say this will help families stay connected to their workplaces and essential services, while also providing them with long-term housing security and ownership rights.
Land has been identified, design to be finalized soon
The housing department has already identified government land for the project in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri under CURE area.
Officials are now finalizing the number of housing units, building height, apartment layout and overall design after consultation with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. A final decision is expected in the next few days.
This announcement has generated strong public interest. According to officials, 1,061 applications were received during the latest Prajavani public grievance programme, of which 908 were related to the Indiramma Housing Scheme.
Officials said every Monday they receive 1,000 to 1,500 applications, about 90% of which are housing requests. Special help desks have also been set up to assist applicants and answer queries.
What is the treatment?
Hyderabad Core Urban Area (CURE) is a new governance structure created by the Government of Telangana to coordinate urban planning and development in the Hyderabad metropolitan area.
It will oversee key sectors such as infrastructure development, traffic management, disaster response, power, drinking water, public transport and municipal services. The CURE Apex Governance Council will be chaired by CM Reddy, comprising senior ministers and officials responsible for urban development, to oversee its implementation.
The Telangana government is expanding the Indiramma Housing Scheme to provide 1 lakh low-income houses for the urban poor in Hyderabad, with its formal launch taking place on July 20. The objective of this scheme is to improve housing access and standard of living for economically weaker families.
