CJP protest live: A day after the Cockroach Janata Party’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ march to Parliament, the organisation’s founder Abhijit Dubke on Monday visited Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and met students injured in the protests. In a post on Twitter, Dupke said a girl is “in critical condition after being injured during the brutal lathicharge.”
After police personnel resorted to lathicharge and tear gas shells on Monday, the CJP alleged brutality and accused security personnel of “attacking” a truck that was carrying Deepke, activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali J Angmo and actors Shabana Azmi and Prakash Raj. About 50,000 protesters took to the streets on Monday demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The protest march, which began peacefully, with protesters carrying flowers for police personnel, by late afternoon the main protest stage was broken up by police and the protesters were removed from Jantar Mantar. As the crowd started increasing at the protest site, students started climbing the iron barricades to cross and continue their peaceful march. After this the security forces resorted to lathicharge, which continued throughout the day. Several protesters were injured during the march, some seen bleeding severely from the head.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police accused the protesters of displaying “unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour” during the march and accused them of attacking security personnel, damaging government vehicles and public property. More than 118 police personnel were injured on Monday, police said, claiming that the protesters had refused to disperse and “deliberately violated the prohibitory orders imposed.”
CJP members met JP Nadda
Amid the protest march on Monday, CJP said the government had approached the organization for talks, following which its spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das met Union minister JP Nadda.
During the meeting, Nadda assured CJP that the government would internally discuss their demands. “The only assurance we have received is that he will talk to the leadership and share the findings,” Ranka told PTI news agency. CJP spokespersons met Nadda twice in two hours at the minister’s residence and submitted a memorandum citing their demands, including Pradhan’s resignation.
However, Ranka told HT late on Monday night that “the meeting turned out to be useless”, adding that the CJP did not receive any response from the government thereafter. Ranka said, “Next time we won’t talk to them until they come to the protest site. If they don’t respect our time, we also won’t respect theirs.”
Security intact, protesters returned to Jantar Mantar
Late on Monday night, security remained tight as 40-50 security personnel were still seen standing on footpaths around the C-Hexagon, especially near the starting point of the Kartavya Path which was found completely barricaded.
Apart from this, presence of security personnel was seen on Ashoka Road and Raisina Road, around the Press Club of India, outside the Central Secretariat metro station, and on the footpaths outside Rail Bhawan and Shastri Bhawan. All roads leading to Parliament were barricaded. Anti-riot vehicles, police buses and other four-wheelers and two-wheelers were found deployed on the roads.
Meanwhile, as the protesters returned to the stage which was demolished by the Delhi Police, CJP’s Ranka said they would remain there until their demands were met.
Wangchuk’s health remains stable
Meanwhile, activist Sonam Wangchuk is admitted to Vardhaman Mahaveer Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital, with doctors saying her condition is stable. According to the health bulletin released on Monday, his vital parameters are within stable limits, while blood parameters are at low levels.
A multidisciplinary team of experts from the hospital and AIIMS New Delhi is closely monitoring his health, the bulletin said. Doctors said continuous clinical observation is necessary to recover from mild to moderate dehydration and detect any possible complications at an early stage. The activist had appealed to be discharged from the hospital to join the protest march on Monday and claimed he was being kept in “illegal detention”.
