Meanwhile, Congress units across the country, including Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam, protested against the police lathicharge on students and the detention of party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Raul, Priyanka and other Congress leaders staged a protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was also detained during the protest outside PM Narendra Modi’s residence.
Following the Delhi High Court order, activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Medanta Hospital while she continued her indefinite fast. News agency ANI quoted sources as saying that Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda visited Gurugram Hospital on Tuesday night to inquire about the health of the worker.
Many protesters detained, injured after police action in ‘Chalo Sansad’ march
At least 70 protesters were detained during the ‘Chalo Sansad’ protest march on Monday. Following this, CJP, Aam Aadmi Party and others assured free legal aid to the detained student protesters.
Thousands of protesters joined the call to march to Parliament. Delhi Police did not give permission for the march and Section 163 of BNSS was imposed. Despite barricades on major roads, metro stations closed and mobile internet suspended, the protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar before moving towards Parliament.
By afternoon, areas including Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, Raisina Road, India Gate and Ashoka Road had turned into confrontation zones as police used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters, HT reported earlier. Several protesters were injured and admitted to Lady Hardinge and RML hospitals, with one woman undergoing treatment in the ICU of the latter medical facility.
Delhi Police said 118 personnel were injured during the march, and claimed that the protesters had displayed “unruly” and violent behavior by attacking personnel with stones and other objects, violating prohibitory orders despite repeated warnings.
Dharmendra Pradhan’s reaction to Congress’s opposition
Union Education Minister Pradhan hit out at the protest by Congress outside the PM’s residence, claiming that the party is “exploiting students as a political tool to create disruption” during the monsoon session of Parliament.
“Mr @RahulGandhi and @INCIndia decided to stage a protest outside the residence of the Honorable Prime Minister, causing inconvenience to the public and disregarding established safety protocols,” Pradhan said in a post on Twitter. He alleged that despite the government being ready for discussion, the Congress was indulging in “political drama over democratic debate”. Pradhan said, “For Rahul Gandhi, it is not about students. It is about creating confrontation after every genuine avenue has been opened for discussion.”
The Union Minister said the government is “100% committed to discussing NEET and addressing every genuine concern of our youth on the floor of the House”. He said students are “far better off being treated as assistants in a political campaign.”
