Delhi-NCR gets a brief break from the heat, but heavy rain continues to disrupt life in UP. With more states facing alerts, here’s what the latest weather forecast says
Uttar Pradesh remains one of the worst-affected states following several days of persistent rain.
Weather Update: A noticeable change in weather greeted Delhi-NCR on Monday, with cooler winds, hazy skies and little sunshine replacing the recent heat. The change follows light rain across the region over the past two days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting generally pleasant weather and little likelihood of further rain in the capital on Monday.
The cooler conditions are expected to be temporary. The IMD has forecast mainly clear skies from Tuesday, with temperatures gradually climbing in the days ahead.
Delhi Temperature Drops After Recent Rain
At Safdarjung, the maximum temperature on Monday is expected to remain around 32°C, while the minimum is likely to be around 21°C. The forecast range is 31-33°C for the day and 20-22°C overnight. The relatively low temperatures result from recent rainfall and cooler north-westerly to north-easterly winds. Similar conditions are expected across Palam, Lodhi Road and other weather stations in the capital.
Safdarjung received around 5 mm of rain over the preceding 24 hours. Light rain and drizzle were also reported from parts of Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.
Despite the cooler start, the IMD expects some sunshine later in the day and has not issued a weather warning for Delhi-NCR. There is also no significant threat of thunderstorms or strong winds on Monday.
Clearer Skies From Tuesday
The southwest monsoon has begun withdrawing from Delhi, and weather conditions are expected to become progressively drier.
From Tuesday, the capital is likely to see mostly clear skies, with the maximum temperature gradually rising to around 33-34°C.
The latest IMD forecast also indicates that Delhi is likely to experience a warmer spell after the brief cool period.
Weather Systems Keep Several States On Alert
While Delhi-NCR is expected to see relatively stable conditions, several other parts of India remain under the influence of active weather systems.
The low-pressure area over north-central Uttar Pradesh is continuing to influence rainfall activity over the region. Heavy rain is possible in eastern Uttar Pradesh, while isolated areas of western Uttar Pradesh could receive very heavy rainfall.
Another low-pressure system has developed over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining Myanmar region. The IMD said the system is likely to move north-north-westwards and strengthen into a depression before moving towards the northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.
The combination of these systems is expected to keep rain and thunderstorms active across several parts of the country.
Rain And Thunderstorms Forecast Across Multiple States
The IMD has forecast rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across a large part of the country on Monday. Areas facing significant weather activity include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and several northeastern states.
Uttarakhand is among the areas facing a heavy-rain warning on September 28, while thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in parts of the northeast and southern peninsula.
Bihar Faces Continued Rain And Flood Risk
Bihar is expected to remain wet through October 1, with heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations.
The continuing rain has pushed up water levels in several major rivers, increasing the risk of flooding in parts of north Bihar.
Jharkhand Braces For More Rain
Jharkhand is also expected to receive heavy rain and strong winds on Monday, extending a spell of unsettled weather that has affected the state for the past several days.
Thunderstorms and rain are expected to remain active in several parts of the state.
Himachal Pradesh Likely To See Widespread Rain
Himachal Pradesh is expected to remain under the influence of active weather conditions, with fairly widespread to widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning forecast for September 28.
Authorities have advised residents and travellers to remain cautious in vulnerable areas.
Uttarakhand Faces Heavy Rain And Thunderstorms
Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue across Uttarakhand on Monday, with heavy rainfall forecast in parts of the state.
Some areas had already experienced very heavy rain on September 27, adding to the risk of landslides, road blockages and other weather-related disruptions.
Uttar Pradesh Faces Heavy To Very Heavy Rain
Uttar Pradesh remains one of the worst-affected states following several days of persistent rain. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in western parts of the state, along with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations.
A yellow alert has been issued for Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Jyotiba Phule Nagar, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Sitapur, Gonda, Balrampur, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar and Deoria.
An orange alert has been issued for Bahraich, Shravasti, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad and Bijnor.
57 Dead, More Than 1,000 Houses Damaged In UP
The rain has caused widespread damage across Uttar Pradesh. According to the latest figures released by the state authorities, 57 people were killed and 46 injured in rain- and storm-related incidents over the affected period. More than 1,020 houses were damaged, while 107 animals died. Excessive rainfall was recorded in 56 of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts.
Sitapur reported the highest number of deaths at seven, while Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur recorded five each. Ayodhya and Gorakhpur reported four deaths each, according to the state situation report.
The latest figures supersede the earlier count of 711 damaged houses and 78 cattle deaths cited in preliminary reports.
Lucknow Records 180.4 Mm Rain In Three Days
Lucknow has also experienced an unusually wet spell. The city received 180.4 mm of rain between September 25 and 27, compared with the normal 9.4 mm for the corresponding three-day period.
The sky is expected to remain generally cloudy on Monday, with brief spells of clearing possible. Light rain or drizzle may occur, while the maximum temperature is forecast to reach around 29°C.
Flooding Worsens In Maharajganj
Several villages in Maharajganj have been affected by floodwaters flowing in from rivers originating in Nepal. Water has entered Gedhawa, Sohagibarwa, Bhotha and Shikarpur, while the Narayani river has continued to rise.
Around 600,000 cusecs of water was reportedly released from the Narayani during the night, worsening flooding in low-lying areas. Rescue and relief teams, including PAC and SSB personnel, have been deployed, while affected residents have moved to higher ground.
Around 45,000 people have reportedly been affected by the flooding.
Nepal Waters Cause Flooding In Barabanki
The Saryu river has also risen sharply in Barabanki after water flowing from Nepal reached the area. At Hetmapur in the Ramnagar tehsil area, floodwaters and erosion damaged structures close to the riverbank. A mosque and a Shiv temple were submerged, while around 10 houses were also affected.
The erosion subsequently moved towards the site associated with Baba Narayan Das. Part of the temple structure there was also swept away by the river.
Residents reported that the Saryu had remained relatively calm until Saturday evening before the river level rose rapidly during the night.
Badaun Reports Cattle Deaths Amid Rain And Cold
Rain and falling temperatures have also affected livestock in Badaun. The administration has officially confirmed the deaths of 30 cattle and said more than 40 others are receiving treatment. The latest official statewide figures, however, put animal deaths linked to the wider rain-related situation at 107. The administration said 20 cattle died in Abhigaon, nine in Byora and one in Manikpur.
The Chief Development Officer is monitoring the situation, while a case has been registered against the caretaker in Abhigaon and an investigation is under way.
Bajrang Dal state president Pankaj Gupta, after visiting Abhigaon, claimed that 74 cattle had died there. He said the bodies of 54 cattle were found in the cowshed and another 20 had been buried in a pit within the premises. The claim is separate from the administration’s officially confirmed figures.
Odisha, West Bengal And Andaman Region Under Watch
Odisha continues to face the impact of heavy rain associated with the Bay of Bengal weather system. Flooding has affected several parts of the state, with reports of large-scale evacuations.
Another spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms is forecast for Odisha on Monday.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands could receive heavy to very heavy rain through September 29. Thundersqualls are possible on Monday, with winds of 50-60 kmph and gusts reaching 70 kmph.
West Bengal is also expected to receive rain and thunderstorms in some areas through October 3.
Northeast To See Rain And Gusty Winds
The northeastern states are also expected to remain under unsettled weather conditions. Arunachal Pradesh could receive isolated rain through October 3, while Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to see rain during the coming days.
Fairly widespread to widespread rain is expected across the region on September 30.
Assam and Meghalaya could experience thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts reaching 60 kmph, between September 28 and 30. Similar conditions are possible over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from September 28 to October 1.
Heavy rain is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on September 30 and over Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states around September 29-30.
Maharashtra And Gujarat To See More Rain
Parts of western India are also likely to remain wet. Isolated rainfall is forecast over Gujarat, Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra through October 3, while Marathwada could receive rain on September 29.
Saurashtra and Kutch are expected to see rainfall from September 30 to October 3.
Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts reaching 60 kmph, are possible over Madhya Maharashtra on September 29. Strong winds are also expected in parts of Maharashtra on September 28 and 30.
South India To Remain Wet
Rainfall is expected to continue across several parts of peninsular India over the coming week. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Lakshadweep, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal could receive isolated rain through October 3.
Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive rain through September 30, while coastal Karnataka could see rain on September 28.
Delhi Gets A Brief Respite As Monsoon Winds Down
For Delhi-NCR, Monday’s cooler weather offers a short break from the recent heat, with temperatures remaining below the seasonal average and rain unlikely during the day.
The broader weather picture, however, remains unsettled. While the capital is expected to turn warmer and drier from Tuesday, several states continue to face heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding and weather-related damage.
The IMD’s latest forecasts indicate that the transition out of the southwest monsoon will not bring an immediate end to rainfall across the country, with multiple weather systems continuing to influence different regions.
