Shubman Gill expresses gratitude after Best International Cricketer honour

Shubman Gill expressed gratitude after winning the Polly Umrigar Award (Best International Cricketer – Men) for the 2024-25 season, at the BCCI Naman Awards 2026, in New Delhi.

India`s ODI and Test skipper thanked the BCCI for the prestigious award as he entered a list of legends who have managed to win the prize. Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and Jasprit Bumrah are among the former winners of the award.

After receiving the award, Gill credited India`s cricketing achievement of the last year as a collective effort and thanked the staff and his fellow players. Gill further thanked his parents and family members for their continued support throughout the journey.

“Firstly, thank you, BCCI. Many other greats and many legends have received this award. So, it`s a great honour to be here. I think what we have been able to achieve last year as an Indian cricket group has been tremendous. Five ICC trophies, I don`t think it has ever happened. And I wanna thank my teammates. Without them, it would not have been possible. Also, my parents and all my family members who helped me get here where I am,” Gill said after receiving the award.

Notably, this marked the second time that Gill has been named the Best International Cricketer – Men at the Naman Awards. He also received the award for his performances in the 2022-24 season.

2024-25 was Shubman Gill`s standout year of his career

Shubman Gill had a fantastic 2025, particularly in the Test format for India. He set the standard during the five-Test series against England, being the country`s leading run scorer with 754 runs in 10 innings at a remarkable average of 75.40. 

His highest score was 269, and he scored a total of 4 centuries throughout the series. With 983 runs at an average of 70.21 in nine games, Gill also became the highest run scorer in international cricket in 2025.

The 26-year-old also made an important contribution to India`s successful Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. He scored an unbeaten 101 against Bangladesh in India`s opening match in the tournament. He ended the tournament with 188 runs at an average of 47, finishing as India`s third-highest run-scorer.

Actor Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar leans heavily into retro nostalgia, weaving classic tracks into some of the film’s most pivotal moments. Now, veteran Pakistani singer Hasan Jahangir has claimed that the makers of the Aditya Dhar directorial paid him $50,000 (Around ₹45 lakh) to secure the rights to his iconic song Hawa Hawa for the film.

Recently, Hasan Jahangir joined host Nida Yasir in ARY Digital Ramadan transmission Shan e Sahoor, where he spoke about his career, and his famous song Hawa Hawa being used in Dhurandhar.

During the conversation, Hasan Jahangir mentioned that Hawa Hawa was used recently in a ₹100 crore film, noting that it went on to make ₹1100 crore. He was hinting at Dhurandhar.

Following this, the host asked if he was paid anything for using the song. To which, Hasan Jahangir, “Ji hain, makers mein mujhe $50,000 diye. Paise bhi diye aur permission bhi li (They paid me money and took permission to use the song as well).”

At this point, the host brought up the title of the film Dhurandhar, noting that it was a good thing the makers had taken permission.

Hasan Jahangir shared, “Pehle copyright system nahi tha. But abhi jo bhi mere gaane use karta hai, woh pehle permission leta hai aur paise bhi deta hai. Hawa Hawa 40 saal pehle aaya tha. Maine usko 1986 mein record kiya tha aur 1987 mein launch kiya tha (Earlier, there was no copyright system. But now, whoever wants to use my songs first takes permission and also pays for it. Hawa Hawa came out 40 years ago. I recorded it in 1986 and it was released in 1987).”

Hasan Jahangir’s iconic track Hawa Hawa played during the introduction of SP Aslam (Sanjay Dutt), setting the tone as he confronts drug peddlers in a stark white desert. With effortless style and flair, the police officer takes them down one by one, turning the sequence into a memorable entry scene.

Apart from Hawa Hawa, Dhurandhar used several other retro Hindi tracks into its narrative. The film features songs such as Na Toh Karvan Ki Talaash Hai from Barsaat Ki Raat, Ramba Ho by Usha Uthup, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja from Caravan, and a reworked version of Na De Dil Pardesi Nu/Jogi.

About Dhurandhar

Helmed by Aditya Dhar, the spy action thriller is the first instalment of a two-part film series. It tells the story of an Indian spy infiltrating Karachi’s criminal and political underworld in Pakistan. The plot weaves together several real-life events involving geopolitical tensions, such as the 1999 IC-814 hijacking, the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and events surrounding Operation Lyari.

Released on December 5, the film collected over ₹1300 crore worldwide and became the first Bollywood film to cross ₹1000 crore at the domestic box office. Its sequel is slated to release on March 19.

The film was initially set for a box office showdown with Yash’s much-anticipated Toxic, but the clash was avoided after the latter postponed its release from March 19 to June 4. However, the spy thriller will now face fresh competition from Pawan Kalyan’s Ustaad Bhagat Singh. Both films are releasing on March 19.

Naga Chaitanya is currently on a professional high. The actor recently received the Best Actor award at the Telangana Gaddar Film Awards 2025 for his film Thandel (2025), and up next, he will be seen in the adventure drama Vrushakarma, where he plays a treasure hunter, and he calls it a “dream come true”. The first look of the film has been received well by the audience and he is ecstatic. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of a large scale spectacle film, with a nice mythical layer added to it. That was my dream in the last few years and finally that dream came true,” he says.

Ask him if it is because of the rootedness of the story that it appealed to not just the audience but also to him as an actor and Naga Chaitanya says, “Yes, because people have become curious about Indian mythology and stories of the land. Today, in the age of VFX and all the technology, we are able to show those stories in a better way. It’s become a unique experience seeing all of it come to life. Not only in India, but even across the world, if you see why Indian films are doing so well, it’s because our stories are so interesting. So being part of that mythical journey, it’s a dream come true.”

For Vrushakarma, Chaitanya dons a ripped physique, a glimpse of which he recently put up on social media, and it is something new that he is bringing to the screen. “I’m playing a treasure hunter, so there’s so much styling that you can do and a lot of tools you can play around with as an actor in terms of the character design. Fitness is something I enjoy off screen too. In some of my previous characters, being fit or having a good looking physique was not part of it. But over here, it did fit into the role. So, I enjoyed bringing my off screen personality to the screen in terms of fitness,” he says. Tease him about his transition from being cute to hot and he quips, “Being an actor, you want to cover the entire spectrum. I’m happy that both the words are being used to describe me and I’d always like to stay relevant to both.”

Ask him if Vrushakarma has a potential to turn into a franchise of its own, and while Chaitanya is hopeful, he is also practical. He says, “I think success of the first film will dictate that.”

China’s Hua Hong Group has developed advanced chip manufacturing technology that can be used to produce AI chips, four people familiar with the matter said, a major milestone in Beijing’s efforts to boost tech self-sufficiency.

The group’s contract chipmaking business, Huali Microelectronics, is readying a 7-nanometre chipmaking process at its plant in Shanghai, the people said. That would make it the second Chinese chipmaker with such advanced technology. Hua Hong is China’s second-largest chipmaker. Huawei Technologies Ltd. has been in collaboration with the chipmaker for the 7 nm AI chip, the sources said.

China’s largest contract chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation or SMIC, is at present the only domestic producer capable of making chips with 7 nm technologies.

SMIC uses Dutch chip equipment maker ASML’s immersion machines to make 7 nm chips, but production yields — the number of good chips made per silicon wafer — have remained weak, analysts have said.

China Semicon Overdrive

The development comes after Washington eased some of its tech export controls since last year, allowing Nvidia Corp. to sell its second-most-powerful AI chips to China. Despite the easing, Beijing has encouraged domestic firms to purchase homegrown alternatives, as it seeks to wean itself off foreign suppliers.

Reuters could not determine how Hua Hong achieved advanced manufacturing capability, its manufacturing efficiency and which equipment suppliers were involved in the development. Hua Hong’s development of a 7 nm chipmaking process has not been previously reported.

All of the people cited above declined to be named, because the information is not meant to be public. Hua Hong Group, Huali, Hua Hong Semiconductor and Huawei did not respond to requests for comment.

ASML said it does not comment on questions related to deliveries.

Chip R&D underway in China

Huali’s R&D on 7 nm chips at its Hua Hong Fab 6 began last year, with support from domestic equipment suppliers including Huawei-backed SiCarrier, which tested its equipment at a facility in Shenzhen last year, a separate source said. SiCarrier did not respond to a request for comment.

The development followed an announcement by Hua Hong Semiconductor in December that it planned to acquire a controlling stake in Huali and raise a further 7.56 billion yuan ($1.10 billion) to fund technological upgrades and research at the foundry.

Huali is planning initial 7 nm chip production capacity of a few thousand wafers per month by the end of the year, with a goal to ramp up more later, two of the sources said.

Chinese GPU designer Biren is using Huali’s 7 nm line for tapeout — a process in which a chip design is committed to a physical prototype for testing before mass production begins, one of the sources said.

Placed on a US trade blacklist in 2023, Biren lost access to TSMC’s contract manufacturing service shortly after. Biren did not respond to requests for comment.

The Hua Hong Fab 6 is the most advanced of seven foundries within the Hua Hong Group and currently manufactures logic chips using 22 nm and 28 nm process nodes, according to the company’s website. By contrast, its Fab 5 produces chips using mature technologies ranging from 40 nm to 55 nm.
