Toaster movie review: Rajkummar Rao`s comedy ends up half baked

Toaster introduces us to Ramakant (Rajkummar Rao), who is a man defined by his extreme stinginess. He lives with his wife, Shilpa (Sanya Malhotra), who is a black belt in judo, in a rent-controlled apartment in a quaint society filled with senior citizens.

Shilpa, irate at Ramakant`s frugality, nudges him into buying an expensive toaster worth Rs 5,000 as a wedding gift for her Guruji`s daughter. When the wedding is called off at the last minute, Ramakant visits Guruji`s house, learning to his dismay that all the gifts have been donated to an orphanage. He tries reasoning with the orphanage`s manager (Farah Khan), but he is told in no uncertain terms to get lost. Desperate to return the toaster and get his money back, Ramakant stealthily enters the building after nightfall, grabs it, and escapes, but not before being spotted by the children and the guard. With the result that, the next morning, the police are waiting at his apartment to arrest him.

Ramakant and Shilpa are surrounded by Mrs D`Souza (Seema Pahwa), Glen D`Souza (Abhishek Banerjee) and Mrs Pherwani (Archana Puran Singh), who populate their film as their neighbours. The landlord Mrs D`Souza, is a well-intentioned lady suffering from acute constipation. Her other grievance in life is her wayward son Glen, who, when he`s not smoking a joint, is surreptitiously filming a Minister`s clandestine encounters with women to blackmail him. Frustrated by both, she pops off (Yes, that`s really what happens).

Things then start going downhill with a vengeance, and get much more complicated before the resolution arrives.

The film has many genuine laugh-out-loud moments, even as the plot grows increasingly convoluted, but the lack of a wider story to follow ultimately makes the film fall flat. Just as you are somewhat sold on the ride, the second half segues into an entirely ludicrous direction, with much hither and thither, after which it cannot be revived. Its novelty cast aside, it becomes predictable and stretched.

For me, it is the premise of Ramakant`s obsession with frugality hammered down our throats that does not land. Although Toaster is aware of its silliness, it does not have the bandwidth for such an outlandish flight of imagination. You want to lean fully into the absurdity because it is, after all, a wacky screwball-esque comedy, but it often pulls you out.

Rajkummar Rao has proven time and time again that comedy is his forte. Here, too, he kills it with his physical comedy, but his unscrupulous Ramakant elicits no sympathy within me. There`s a poignant scene where an unsettling episode prompts him to reflect with horror on the consequences brought by miserliness. You hope for it to spark genuine growth, but that scene is never brought up again, and he`s back to his default setting as he gets involved in even more deceit.

Archana Puran Singh really gets to show off her action chops, beyond being a decrepit and sorry figure. The same cannot be said for Sanya Malhotra, however, who is a natural on-screen but is not given a substantial role.

Ultimately, Toaster, though flawed, is a respite from the utterly brainless comedies being churned out. If you`re in search of a light, quirky laugh saga that embraces its silliness, Toaster can be a fit contender.

MI sweat over Rohit Sharma’s fitness

MI sweat over Rohit Sharma’s fitness

Mumbai: Rohit Sharma went through the paces testing his injured hamstring in pre-match training on on Wednesday ahead of Mumbai Indians’ home tie against Punjab Kings.

Rohit’s workout at the Wankhede included stretching and jogging for 40 minutes followed by a 20-minute batting session. “Rohit is being assessed and we will know when we will know,” the Mumbai Indians media manager said on Wednesday.

The former MI captain had limped off the field while batting holding his hamstring in the sixth over of the RCB tie on Sunday. Rohit, 38, had picked up injury under extreme heat and humidity in Mumbai. Rohit is unlikely to risk his long-term fitness for Thursday’s match and a lot would depend on how he feels after practice.

Accompanied by the physio, Rohit took a few slow rounds of the stadium. He then ran diagonally to test his hamstring before batting with the hamstring strapped. A few throwdowns later, he even stepped out against a few net bowlers before ending the brief session.

Rohit has batted with hamstring niggles before. His knock of 76 in last year’s Champions Trophy final is an example. If sufficiently healed, Rohit can play as an Impact player.

Five-time winners MI find themselves languishing at ninth in the points table with one win in four matches. Rohit’s absence would further disrupt their batting plans. With 137 runs in four matches, he is MI’s highest run-scorer. As a batting unit, MI’s performances have paled compared to several other teams that have raised the bar. Even the Rohit-Rickleton opening partnership hasn’t been as destructive as a few others.

There is no ready replacement available for Rohit in the MI squad. Quinton de Kock is waiting in the wings, but that would force Trent Boult out of the twelve. Among Indians, the left-handed hard-hitter from Jharkhand, Robin Minz, and the exciting batter from Vidarbha Danish Malewar could be in contention if he misses out.

A more straightforward option would be to push either Tilak Varma or Suryakumar Yadav up the order. Minz, Malewar and De Kock all had long batting sessions.

A 24×7 job full of tough decisions: Rajkummar Rao-Patralekhaa on producing 'Toaster'

Mumbai, Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa, who have backed the new Netflix comedy “Toaster”, say producing a movie is no picnic as it involves a lot of decision-making and trying to figure out the best for the project.

A 24×7 job full of tough decisions: Rajkummar Rao-Patralekhaa on producing ‘Toaster’

The movie, where Rao also acts alongside Sanya Malhotra, revolves around a miser who wants to get back the toaster he gifted at a wedding when the ceremony is called off, leading to a series of bizarre incidents.

Directed by Vivek Das Chaudhary and produced by Patralekhaa, the film also features Archana Puran Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Farah Khan, Upendra Limaye, Vinod Rawat, Jitendra Joshi and Seema Pahwa. It started streaming from Wednesday.

“You’ll have to keep making decisions and you’re always trying to figure is this the best thing for the film,” Patralekhaa told PTI.

Rao said he was often called a “producer’s actor” but realised how much of a tightrope walk it is while working on “Toaster”.

“Sometimes you can go on set and demand that ‘I want this, I want that’. I have never done that because I understand that somebody’s hard earned money is in the film.

“But now, of course, being on this side, I realised how tough it is to be a producer. You can have an army of people if you reach a certain point but till then it’s you, your hard work and vision. I have a lot of respect to all my producer friends out there…It’s lot of hard work and lot of thankless nights,” he said.

Known for his roles in films such as “Stree”, “Shahid”, “Bareilly Ki Barfi”, “Trapped” and “Badhaai Do”, Rao said the story came to them as a one-pager and Parveez Shaikh developed it and they decided to back it through their banner Kampa Film.

Chaudhary, who has directed many ad films, said he boarded the story as it felt relatable a common man’s life spiralling out because of a toaster.

Director Farah Khan is a good friend of the couple and here she turns into a character. Rao said she she is naturally funny and should do more acting.

Rao has featured in some of the most successful comedies in recent times be it “Stree” and its sequel, “Bareilly Ki Barfi”, “Made in China” or “Hum Do Humare Do” and it is a genre he enjoys watching as an audience as well.

“I think comedy is a tough business. It is not easy. But when it lands. It really lands well. I think people really enjoy and love watching comedies because everybody loves to laugh. Everybody loves to get entertained. I am blessed that God has given me that ability that I can make people laugh through my work.”

What’s next for the couple as producers?

“We do not have so many scripts. We have one script that’s been made. The film’s called ‘Raftaar’ and it’s going to release in July,” Patralekhaa said.

India rejects US Section 301 allegations, seeks termination; calls for resolution via talks

India has strongly pushed back against the United States’ Section 301 investigations, rejecting allegations of unfair trade practices and seeking immediate termination of the probes. In its submission to the US Trade Representative (USTR), India “firmly denies all allegations made in the initiation notice” related to claims of excess structural capacity and production in manufacturing sectors, PTI reported. “The initiation Notice is premised on aggregate macroeconomic indicators, without identifying any specific act, policy or practice of the Government of India that could be considered ‘unreasonable or discriminatory’ and that ‘burdens or restricts United States commerce’ as required by Section 301(b) of the Act,” the submission said. India said the notice provides no “cogent rationale” or prima facie evidence to support allegations that the country has structural excess capacity leading to a trade surplus with the US. “India submits that the present investigation does not satisfy the requirements for the initiation of this investigation pursuant to Sections 301 and 302 of the Trade Act of 1974. India calls upon the USTR to make a negative determination and terminate the investigation forthwith,” it said. The government also urged that trade concerns be addressed through ongoing bilateral negotiations rather than unilateral measures, noting that both countries are engaged in discussions for a Bilateral Trade Agreement. “India remains willing to constructively engage with the United States in the underlying investigation, including any consultation,” it added. Separately, responding to another Section 301 probe launched on March 12 on alleged failure to act against forced labour, India said the investigation does not meet legal requirements for initiation. “India requests the USTR to make a negative determination and terminate the investigation against India. Additionally, India remains willing to constructively engage with the United States in the underlying investigation, including any consultation,” the submission said. The responses have been filed by the commerce and industry ministry on behalf of the government. On March 11, the USTR initiated investigations into policies and industrial practices of 16 economies, including India, China, Japan and the European Union, to examine “unfair foreign practices” affecting American manufacturing. A day later, on March 12, the USTR launched a broader probe covering 60 economies, including India and China, to assess whether their practices related to forced labour imports are unreasonable or discriminatory and restrict US commerce. India said its submissions represent the public, non-confidential summary of its response, while the full version has been filed separately as confidential.

BENGALURU: The early phase of IPL has largely belonged to emerging talent and young turks. But the midweek fixture at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here was different. It turned out to be a vintage Wednesday. Two experienced exponents of the sport from Royal Challengers Bengaluru came out to show Lucknow Super Giants how the job is done.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Two seasoned campaigners led the charge. The 36-year-old Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/27) set the tone with a masterclass in swing bowling, exploiting movement early before nailing his yorkers at the death. At the other end, 35-year-old Josh Hazlewood (1/20) was relentless, operating on probing lengths that proved difficult to read. On a spongy surface, RCB’s pacers — with Rasikh Dar (4/24) joining the party — used the short ball to unsettle the opposition before bundling LSG out for a modest 146.

Chasing a below-par target, RCB did flirt with a wobble but eventually sealed a five-wicket win in 15.1 overs, maintaining their unbeaten run at home this season.Phil Salt fell early, but Virat Kohli, coming in as an Impact Player for Suyash Sharma, quickly found his rhythm. Consecutive boundaries off Mohammed Shami showcased his trademark wristwork and timing. Kohli raced to 34 off his first 14 deliveries, putting the chase firmly on track. However, disciplined bowling from Avesh Khan, coupled with wickets at the other end, slowed the tempo. Kohli was denied a half-century, falling for 49 (34b; 6×4, 1×6), caught by Nicholas Pooran at long-on. But the others ensured the job was done with plenty to spare.

Josh Hazlewood

Earlier, LSG’s sluggish start to the IPL season showed little sign of improvement as their batting unit faltered again. On the eve of the clash, the franchise’s global cricket director, Tom Moody, had hoped the venue’s run-friendly reputation would act as a tonic. Instead, LSG’s struggles deepened.RCB’s tactic of using short-pitched deliveries effectively unsettled the batters. Hazlewood brought control at the top, Bhuvneshwar was incisive, and Rasikh starred with clever variations that left batters guessing.LSG never quite recovered after an early setback. Aiden Markram fell in the fourth over, miscuing a full toss from Rasikh to Devdutt Padikkal at covers. From there, it became a slow-paced procession. The batters struggled to gauge the pace of the wicket, often committing too early. RCB tightened the screws with 15 dot balls in the Powerplay, setting the tone for the collapse.Pooran’s lean run continued as he fell to Hazlewood, dragging a short ball back onto his stumps while attempting a pull. Mitchell Marsh (40; 32b; 3×4, 2×6) and Ayush Badoni (38) offered brief resistance, stitching together a 36-run stand to steady the innings. But Krunal Pandya (2/38) broke through, deceiving Marsh with a quicker delivery that crashed into the stumps before removing Abdul Samad in his next over.Mukul Choudhary’s 39 added some late respectability, but the innings never gained real momentum.

INJURY SCARE FOR RISHABH PANT

Rishabh Pant’s difficult outing was compounded by an injury scare. He was first beaten outside off by Hazlewood before being struck on the right abdomen by a rising short ball. Attempting to counterattack, he then inside-edged onto his left elbow, leaving him in visible discomfort. After receiving treatment, Pant walked off, only to return in the 16th over with LSG in trouble at 118/5. Still not fully at ease, the LSG skipper struggled for timing and was eventually dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar after facing just three deliveries.

Pope Leo visits Cameroon with message of peace amid attacks from Trump | Conflict News

US President Donald Trump has lashed out at pope over calls for peace and criticism of US war on Iran.

Pope Leo XIV has arrived in the African nation of Cameroon, pressing forward with calls for peace and coexistence that have attracted the ire of United States President Donald Trump.

The first pope from the US arrived in Cameroon on Wednesday, where he delivered remarks railing against the “whims of the rich and powerful” and called for peace in a country roiled by sectarian conflict.

“It is time to examine our conscience and take a bold leap forward,” Leo said in a speech delivered before President Paul Biya, who has led Cameroon since 1982.

“In order for peace and justice to prevail, the chains of corruption – which disfigure authority and strip it of its credibility – must be broken,” he added.

Pope Leo is visiting Cameroon as part of a 10-day tour of Africa, where he has continued to offer an outspoken message of peace, anticorruption, and social justice. He arrived after visiting Algeria, his first stop on the trip.

His three-day visit to Cameroon will include a “peace meeting” in the northwest city of Bamenda that has been engulfed in fighting from separatist forces, which have announced a three-day pause in hostilities during the pope’s visit.

The Catholic leader’s outspoken position on issues such as the rights and dignity of migrants and criticism of the US-Israel war on Iran has brought him into conflict with the Trump administration.

The pope has called Trump’s threats to destroy Iranian civilisation “truly unacceptable”, and US Vice President JD Vance, a convert to Catholicism, recently stated that the pope should “be careful” when speaking about theology.

Trump himself has lashed out at the leader of the Catholic Church in a series of social media posts, accusing him of being “weak on crime” and too close to the political left.

The US president’s attacks on the pope have caused dissatisfaction with some of his religious supporters. Trump also prompted a backlash when he shared a since-deleted image on social media that appeared to depict him as Jesus Christ.

Pope Leo has responded diplomatically but firmly to those attacks, stating that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration and will continue forward with his calls for peace and criticism of war.

Speaking of his visit to the Great Mosque of Algiers earlier this week in Algeria, the pope said that a message of tolerance and unity is necessary in a world suffering from conflict.

“I think the visit to the mosque was significant to say that although we have different beliefs, we have different ways of worshipping, we have different ways of living, we can live together in peace,” he said.

“And so I think that to promote that kind of image is something which the world needs to hear today.”

IPL 2026: `We are taking one game at a time` Patidar after RCB`s win vs LSG

Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets to move to the top of the IPL table. RCB have now won 4 of their 5 matches in this season`s IPL as they aim for back-to-back titles.

LSG captain Rishabh Pant picked up an injury while batting and did not attend the post-match presentation ceremony. Instead, LSG stand-in captain Nicolas Pooran answered the questions and admitted that it has been a tough start for his team.

“It`s been a tough season for us, we`ve been below par with the bat. 175 would`ve been competitive. But it`s no secret we have been struggling with the bat the entire season and today we paid the price. It`s T20 cricket. It`s a tough game. It`s a tough game to stay consistent as well. But the guys have been really working hard and we`re ready for them. We`ll try to fight it out as well. And I just believe it`s a matter of time. Just stay patient, be ready for the opportunity, and take it on the team. (On his batting) I`m feeling really good and striking the ball nicely. Unfortunately, it hasn`t been going my way this time in the tournament. But that`s happened before. I`ve been in this position already, I know how to fight. And I believe I`ll get out of this.” Stand-in LSG Captain, Nicolas Pooran said.

Rajat Patidar delighted with RCB`s form

Rajat Patidar was happy with the team`s bowling effort after RCB dominated LSG in Bengaluru. The hosts restricted LSG to just 146 runs in the first innings before chasing it down comfortably. With the win, RCB moved to the top of the IPL table.

“(On the bowling) It was fantastic. It was a good thing that we won the toss. The way the fast bowlers hit the deck, it was nice to watch. If you have a specialist T20 bowler, it makes your job easier. They are helping all the other bowlers as well. (On the fielding today) We`re working on the fielding intensity. Long way to go, we are taking one game at a time.” Patidar said.

Dhurandhar 2: Ranveer Singh`s old clip about ban on Pak artists resurfaces

Ranveer Singh is currently basking in the blockbuster sequel of Dhurandhar 2, which has even smashed the box-office records of its first part. While the franchise has been receiving an outpouring of love from fans and members of the industry, many have also criticised the film for being pro-establishment propaganda.

Ranveer Singh`s old statement on Pakistan goes viral

Amid the Dhurandhar 2 mania, Ranveer`s old clip talking about India`s ban on Pakistani artists has now gone viral. The clip is from the India Today Conclave held in 2019. Sharing his take on the issue, Ranveer spoke about prioritising the wishes of people who are in the army rather than spectators.

He said, “I am cognisant that there is one school of thought that one should not mix art with it or sport with it. These are different realms and the boundaries are separate. But at the same time us as artists, sportsmen or spectators, we are not sacrificing the way some of our compatriots are. If there are people in the forces or their near and dear ones, what their sentiments are should have the highest value. If there is one mother of a soldier who believes we should not engage, then we should respect the sentiment. I think what they want should be of utmost importance to us.”

As the clip went viral, netizens were quick to praise the actor for his stance and his clarity of thought. A user shared the video and wrote, “Ranveer Singh was the perfect choice for a film like Dhurandhar,” adding, “He said this way before Dhurandhar in 2019!!”

Another user wrote, “He`s way too articulate, eloquent, and smarter than 90 percent of Bollywood but people couldn`t see beyond his choice of clothes. Deepika, you lucked out.”

Dhurandhar franchise earns Rs 3,000 crore

The dulogy, consisting of Dhurandhar (2025) and Dhurandhar: The Revenge (2026), has officially made it the highest-grossing franchise in the history of Indian cinema. The films starring Ranveer Singh, Sara Arjun, and others have collectively earned over Rs 3,000 crore worldwide. With that, the Dhurandhar franchise has left the Telugu film industry’s Baahubali and Pushpa franchises behind.

When Dhurandhar released in December last year, it collected over Rs 1,307 crore gross worldwide in its lifetime.

According to trade websites, Dhurandhar 2 has now crossed the Rs 1,712 crore mark worldwide. This takes the film`s combined worldwide total to over Rs 3,019 crore, making it the first franchise in Indian cinema to achieve the feat.
