Netflix has adapted Gabriel García Márquez’s brilliant creation One Hundred Years of Solitude Savvy TV marked an apparently good year for literary adaptations this December. At least on TV. 2024 regularly saw stories old and new from the republic of letters to the republic of moving images. But it was TV that won more spectacular victories in its columns than cinema. Diminishing returns haven’t stopped the blockbuster parade of comic book movies from moving forward with rock-ribbed vaudeville. And the studio has no intention of stopping. There were less than a handful of big-screen iterations we could describe as an outright success.

One of that handful was a pleasant surprise wild robotAuthor-illustrator Peter Brown’s middle grade book trilogy was always intended for animated retellings. In charge of the retailing was veteran Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon), with DreamWorks Animation producing. Lupita Nyong’o voices a robot named Rose, who travels to a remote island and cares for an orphaned cow and all the animals in the forest. Hand-painted landscapes are full of the power to appeal to a child’s sense of curiosity about the natural world. The animation captures Rose’s journey as she goes from feeling out of place and unused to learning the wild language and overcoming the boundaries of what she has been programmed to do. It enriches a story about self-growth and found family. This teaches Rose what it means to be a parent and part of a community. And it emphasizes the abundant beauty of nature without diluting its harshness. It is Sanders’ loyalty to the medium, his imaginative desires, and all of its possibilities that give the film its soul.

If filming the unfilmable wasn’t already a delicate challenge, regional fans can make it even more challenging. Denis Villeneuve’s Two-Part dune The saga proved in short that it is not impossible to walk the fine line between loyalty and flexibility. The cinematic medium can be as inaccessible to characters’ interior landscapes as Frank Herbert’s desert planet of Arrakis. But a skilled group of artists and a little rewiring with visual correlations manage to transform a tome full of introspection and exposition into a goose-bump-like spectacle of epic maelstrom. Villeneuve broadly follows the main features of Herbert’s story about a future war for resources. He validates his fears about colonialism, faith, and false messiahs, while managing to make the exploration of these big ideas more intuitive than preachy. He connects the film to the same imaginative range that gave the book its status as a monumental work of science fiction. In the process, he also creates images and sequences worth saving in a time capsule.

What many people might not have expected is Patricia Highsmith’s latest retelling talented mr ripley and James Clavell’s Shogun will be two of the best and most engaging shows of the year on television and streaming. Still, it was pleasant to see. Andrew Scott makes the role of the slippery Ripley his own with an ice-cold gaze and a distinct physicality. Gone are the blue waters and sun-kissed colors of the Italian coastline from René Clément and Anthony Minghella’s versions. Instead, producer Steven Zaillian has imbued Highsmith’s chameleon into noir chic with shadows, silhouettes, stairs, and a Caravaggio fetish. The show is constantly in conversation with the baroque bad guy who was on the run for murder in the years before his death – not unlike our thug with no conscience. Death, violence and repressed sexuality haunt the 16th-century painter’s tenth work just as they do throughout the eight-episode light-and-shadow drama. Black and white photography, crystal clear, crisp and angular, is enough to put you under its spell. The show, along with the recent film Saltburn, proves how well suited Highsmith’s story of murder and self-invention is to this era of contemporary anxieties, hustlers and strugglers. The author herself could not have anticipated its lasting resonance.

Shogun The samurai code, power struggles and nosy Englishmen had enthralled the audience right from the first episode. From there, as all the pawns and players make their moves, the story becomes more interesting with each passing hour. Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks deepen the Japanese perspective of James Clavell’s 1975 historical novel, and therein lies its strength. There’s plenty of slapstick here, but none as mesmerizing as the cool calmness and determination of Anna Sawai’s Mariko-sama. Tadanobu Asano’s Yabushige-sama’s Two-Timing comes in second place.

Of course this year was not without damp squibs. One Hundred Years of Solitude It was a textbook example of an unfilmable book. Had to grapple with the challenge of its story spanning generations. Then there is its vast cast of characters, its endless symbolism and asides, its exquisite blend of myth, history, memory, language, culture and nature – with a touch of magic. With eight of the 16 episodes that have dropped on Netflix so far, it looks like we’ll be hard pressed to rise to the challenge. It has been exhilarating to see all the components of Marquez’s complex literary latticework come together so beautifully. Rather than hacking through a novel for a concise film, a 16 episode show undoubtedly offers more room to break the boundaries of easy solutions while still paying respect to the original. But this isn’t a show that relies too heavily on the borrowed prestige of its source material to elevate itself. Although it helps. The deeply considered page-to-screen translation makes a Macondo worthy of worship. A flood of rich textures reverberate through images and sounds, from the creation of the mythical city through evolution and revolutions to its ultimate end. If you’ve read the book, you can practically smell and taste the air of Macondo while watching the show. And when the first part ends, you feel this pang that makes you wish you were still living it, so much so that you feel like going back and reading the book again. There is no better indicator of a successful adaptation.

As Israel’s war on Gaza rages and Israeli attacks on people in the occupied West Bank continue, Armenian residents of the Old City of Jerusalem are fighting a different battle – quieter, they say, but no less existential.

One of the oldest communities in Jerusalem, the Armenians have lived in the Old City for more than 1,500 years, centred around the Armenian convent.

Now, the small Christian community has begun to fracture under pressure from forces they say threaten them and the multifaith character of the Old City – from Jewish settlers who jeer at clergymen on their way to prayer to a land deal threatening to turn a quarter of their land into a luxury hotel.

Chasms have emerged between the Armenian Patriarchate and the mainly secular community, whose members worry the church is not equipped to protect their dwindling population and embattled convent.

In the Armenian Quarter is Save the Arq’s headquarters, a structure with reinforced plywood walls hung with ancient maps inhabited by Armenians who are there to protest what they see as an illegal land grab by a real estate developer.

The land under threat is where the community holds events and also includes parts of the patriarchate itself.

After years of the patriarchate refusing to sell any of its land, Armenian priest Baret Yeretsian secretly “leased” the lot in 2021 for up to 98 years to Xana Capital, a company registered just before the agreement was signed.

Xana turned more than half the shares to a local businessman, George Warwar, who has been involved in various criminal offences.

Community members were outraged.

The priest fled the country and the patriarchate cancelled the deal in October, but Xana objected and the contract is now in mediation.

Xana has sent armed men to the lot, the activists say, attacking people, including clergy, with pepper spray and batons.

The activists say Warwar has the backing of a prominent settler organisation seeking to expand the Jewish presence in Jerusalem’s Old City.

The organisation, Ateret Cohanim, is behind several controversial land acquisitions in the Old City, and its leaders were photographed with Warwar and Xana Capital owner Danny Rothman, also known as Danny Rubinstein, in December 2023. Ateret Cohanim denied any connection to the land deal.

Activists filed suit against the patriarchate in February, seeking to have the deal declared void and the land to belong to the community in perpetuity.

The patriarchate refused, saying it owns the land.

Armenians began arriving in the Old City as early as the fourth century with a large wave arriving in the early 20th century, fleeing the Ottoman Empire. They have the same status as Palestinians in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem – residents but not citizens, effectively stateless.

Today, the newcomers are mainly boys who arrive from Armenia to live and study in the convent although many drop out. Clergy say that’s partially because attacks against Christians have increased, leaving the Armenians – whose convent is closest to the Jewish Quarter and is along a popular route to the Western Wall – vulnerable.

Father Aghan Gogchyan, the patriarchate’s chancellor, said he’s regularly attacked by groups of Jewish nationalists.

The Rossing Center, which tracks anti-Christian attacks in the Holy Land, documented about 20 attacks on Armenian people and property and church properties in 2023, many involving ultranationalist Jewish settlers spitting at Armenian clergy or graffiti reading “Death to Christians” scrawled on the quarter’s walls.

11 reasons simultaneous elections are not ‘anti-constitutional’

After a brief debate on December 17, 2024, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. The bill, which seeks to hold simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was put to a division of votes at the insistence of opposition members, which was eventually passed with 269 votes in favor and 198 against. Now it has been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for close scrutiny.

Many opposition MPs argued that holding concurrent elections would violate the basic structure of the Constitution. The Indian National Congress, in a submission to the High-level Committee (HLC) on simultaneous elections, claimed that such a reform would lead to a “substantial change in the basic structure of the Constitution”. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) similarly argued that simultaneous elections would weaken democracy, which is a core constitutional value. Echoing these sentiments, several opposition leaders called the bill “anti-union”.

Yet, despite these allegations, the Bill does not violate the basic structure principle. In fact, there are 10 compelling reasons why it is in line with the fundamental principles of the Constitution.

The Constitution allows flexibility

OneIn the early years of the Republic (1951–52, 1957, 1962 and 1967) simultaneous elections were a norm without any adverse impact on the constitutional framework or democratic ethos. Continuation of a constitutionally sanctioned practice cannot be considered a violation of the basic structure. No judicial pronouncement has held that the former practice of simultaneous elections was unconstitutional or detrimental to the basic features of the Constitution.

TwoIt is often argued that simultaneous elections are contrary to the basic structure of the Constitution as it may require the early dissolution of state legislative assemblies – bodies composed of elected representatives – thereby, in effect, going against the express mandate of the people. It is possible

However, as argued in the HLC report, the Constitution itself contemplates that the term of both the House of the People and the Legislative Assembly “shall be five years unless sooner dissolved”. This formulation highlights that the framers intentionally introduced flexibility into legislative tenure. Since premature dissolution is already constitutionally sanctioned, its calibrated use to achieve synchronous election cycles does not introduce any fundamentally new or prohibited element into the constitutional scheme.

No threat to infrastructure

ThreeThe essential features of the basic structure – such as the trinity of rights (Articles 14, 19, and 21), fundamental freedoms, the balance between Parts III and IV, secularism, and independence of the judiciary – remain untouched. The HLC report clearly states that the criticism of simultaneous elections “does not violate the rights of citizens under Part III or any other feature such as the rule of law or an independent and independent judiciary”. Therefore, no core constitutional values were recognized Keshavananda Bharati vs. State of Kerala (AIR 1973 SC 1461) is bad.

FourDemocracy, recognized as part of the basic structure (Kesavananda Bharathi vs State of KeralaAIR 1973 SC 1461; Kihoto Holohan v. The proposed amendment does not curtail citizens’ right to vote or their ability to elect representatives. It simply synchronizes the timing of elections, ensuring that the democratic principle of periodic electoral support is fully preserved.

fiveThe Supreme Court has repeatedly stated that free and fair elections are an integral part of democracy and hence the basic structure (Indira Nehru Gandhi vs Raj NarayanAIR 1975 SC 2299; Union of India vs Association for Democratic ReformsAIR 2002 SC 2112). The proposed amendment does not amend the powers, functions or independence of the Election Commission of India, nor does it weaken the judicial review mechanism. Therefore, the fairness and integrity of the electoral process remains unaffected.

SixWhile democracy is fundamental, the right to vote and the right to contest elections are not fundamental rights; They are constitutional and statutory rights (NP Ponnuswamy vs Returning OfficerAIR 1952 SC 64; Kuldeep Nayyar vs Union of IndiaAIR 2006 SC 3127). Aligning elections does not restrict or remove these rights; It just adjusts their timing. No provision of the proposed amendment renders these rights constitutionally unacceptable, nor does it interfere with their statutory framework.

Constitution is still supreme

SevenFederalism, though part of the basic structure, is not absolute in the Indian context. Indian federalism is sui generis-“Semi-federal” or “cooperative federalism” (SR Bommai vs Union of IndiaAIR 1994 SC 1918; Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi vs Union of India(2018) 8 scale 72). The proposed amendment does not alter the distribution of legislative or executive powers. It does not affect the competence of the states, their legislative autonomy or the constitutional status of Union-State relations. Rather, it maintains federal balance while increasing administrative efficiency.

EightSupremacy and Judicial Review of the Constitution – Salient Features of the Basic Structure (Minerva Mills Limited vs Union of IndiaAIR 1980 SC 1789) – is neither suspended nor weakened by the proposed amendment. The courts retain their full authority to strike down unconstitutional acts. The amendment merely reorganizes the electoral timetable and does not exempt any measure from judicial scrutiny.

nineSecularism, rule of law, and separation of powers – the hallmarks of the basic structure – remain intact (SR Bommai vs Union of IndiaAIR 1994 SC 1918; M. Nagaraj vs. Union of IndiaAIR 2007 SC 71). This amendment does not interfere with the authority of Parliament, State Legislatures or the Judiciary. It does not alter the constitutional scheme of governance but merely standardizes the electoral calendar.

TenFor there to be a violation of the basic structure, the constitutional identity itself must be threatened or altered (IR Coelho vs State of Tamil NaduAIR 2007 SC 861). Synchronization of elections neither changes the identity of the Constitution as a democratic, republican and federal polity nor introduces any new constitutional element which is inconsistent with the existing constitutional ethos.

ElevenThe purpose behind holding simultaneous elections is a matter of electoral management rather than constitutional restructuring. Such efficiency measures do not destroy the fundamental pillars of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has repeatedly clarified that what is prohibited is the destruction or dilution of the basic features of the Constitution and not procedural or administrative reforms consistent with its principles.Sajjan Singh vs State of RajasthanAIR 1965 SC 845).

“False” criticisms

The proposal to synchronize electoral cycles with the aim of reducing the frequency of elections, reducing administrative costs and frequent imposition of Model Code of Conduct has received support from eminent jurists, giving credence to its constitutional justification. Is. Notably, former Chief Justice of India, Justice Dipak Misra, in his letter to the HLC dated February 28, 2024, said that the criticism of holding simultaneous elections as contrary to the basic structure or federal principles is “mistaken”. He called for constitutional flexibility to extend or reduce legislative tenure in exceptional circumstances, as well as the “principle of extension” and the “principle of reduction”, emphasizing that “India, being quasi-federal, There are simultaneous elections for the House and the State Assemblies are not anti-federal.”

Elucidating the benefits further, Justice Mishra emphasized that “synchronizing elections at the national and state levels can achieve greater administrative efficiency by reducing the frequency of elections and the associated costs”. He observed that the measure “could benefit both the Central Government and the State Governments” and would enhance governance by enabling representatives to focus more on legislative and executive functions, free from the constraints of separate elections. He clearly concluded that “the adoption of One Nation, One Election in India is likely to mesh well with the spirit of the Constitution and the principles of cooperative federalism”.

While the opposition’s objections to simultaneous elections appear to be motivated more by political expediency than constitutional merit, the arguments they present fail to withstand legal scrutiny. The framers of the Constitution envisaged a flexible framework for legislative conditions, and the proposed amendment merely harmonizes this flexibility to achieve stability and efficiency in governance.

As Justice Dipak Misra rightly observed, simultaneous elections neither weaken federalism nor violate the basic structure of the Constitution; Rather, they “well understand the spirit of the Constitution” and embrace the principles of cooperative federalism. If anything, the opposition’s insistence on periodic elections reflects a false reluctance to embrace reforms that prioritize governance over sustainable politics.

Nasa astronauts Butch and Suni face further delay in homcoming

Nasa says that the astronauts stuck on the International Space Station will have to wait even longer to get home.

Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were due to be back after just a week when they blasted off in June.

Their stay was extended to February next year because of technical issues with the experimental spacecraft, Starliner, built by Boeing.

Now – following a delay in launching a new capsule to the ISS – the pair won’t be back until late March or possibly April.

Nasa said the delay posed no risk to the astronauts.

In a statement Nasa stated: “The International Space Station recently received two resupply flights in November and is well-stocked with everything the crew needs, including food, water, clothing, and oxygen. The resupply spacecraft also carried special items for the crew to celebrate the holidays aboard the orbital platform.”

Most space station missions last six months, with a few reaching a full year. So the extension to Butch and Suni’s already overdue stay in space should not be a problem, according to Dr Simeon Barber, from the Open University.

“I’m sure that they are already disappointed that they were going to miss Christmas back home with the folks. But this is only another two months on an already quite long mission, and I’m sure if you ask them, I’m sure they would tell you that the space station is where they love to be,” he said.

A new crew needs to launch before Wilmore and Williams can return and the next mission has been delayed by more than a month, according to the space agency.

Nasa’s next crew of four for the ISS was supposed to have been launched in February 2025. The capsule carrying that crew was due to be the one bringing Butch and Sunni home, as well as NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov as part of the normal crew rotation.

But there has been a delay by the private sector firm SpaceX in preparing a brand-new Dragon capsule for the mission. That is now scheduled for flight readiness no earlier than late March.

Nasa said it considered using a different SpaceX capsule to fly up the replacement crew to keep the flights on schedule.

But it has now decided the best option is to wait for the new capsule to transport the next crew.

Noida To Mussoorie And Back With MG ZS EV: Can electric cars go uphill? Of course, you can go and explore mountains or hilly areas driving electric cars, to an extent, and knowing the calibre of your vehicle helps in taking an informed call. Recently, I took MG ZS EV from Noida to Mussoorie. You may not consider Mussoorie, a tough hilly terrain; however, it is a beautiful place for a short weekend getaway. Here’s a glimpse into my journey and the lessons I learned about EV travel in hilly terrains.

Journey Details And Battery Usage

Starting from Noida with an almost fully charged battery (97%), I reached Dehradun via Haridwar with 34% battery left. The flat terrain helped the car use only 63% of the charge. Covering almost 270Kms, I charged the car in Dehradun, up to 52%, knowing the steep climb to Mussoorie (around 35 km) would drain more energy.

By the time I reached my hotel (around 6 pm), which was 7 km further into the hills from Mussoorie, the battery had dropped to 30%, with a consumption of 22% charge between Dehradun and Mussoorie (approx 35km). Now, something very cool happened. The hotel provided a power socket for charging the vehicle without any extra cost.

By morning, the car was charged 72%, which was more than sufficient for local sightseeing.

After exploring nearby attractions, I charged the car overnight again, achieving a full 100% charge for the return trip.

Coming back to Noida was remarkably efficient. Descending from Mussoorie to Dehradun used only 6% battery thanks to the regenerative braking and downward slop, and I reached home with 37% battery left.

The AC was off while driving in Mussoorie region and the speed on flat roads between Noida-Dehradoon-Noida was mostly under 100kmph. This led me to believe that driving an EV into the hills can be a good experience but requires better planning.

Pros Of Taking An EV To The Hills

Cost-Effective Travel: The overall trip cost was incredibly low since the charging expenses were negligible. My hotel didn’t charge for the power used.

Smooth Driving: The MG ZS EV offered a quiet and smooth ride, even on steep, winding roads.

Regenerative Braking: While descending, the car consumed minimal battery and even recharged slightly.

Cons Of Taking An EV To The Hills

Limited Charging Infrastructure: Charging stations were sparse, especially in hilly areas. Finding a reliable spot to charge can be a challenge.

Battery Drain On Climbs: Steep climbs consume a significant amount of battery, requiring frequent top-ups to ensure peace of mind.

Dependence On Accommodation: Charging at the hotel was convenient but not guaranteed everywhere. If the hotel lacked charging facilities, it would have been a hassle.

MG ZS EV Performance

The MG ZS EV performed admirably during this trip. With a claimed range of 461 km and a 50.3 kWh battery pack, it managed to deliver an extraordinary range of 300 km in 63 per cent of charging, which was backed by regenerative braking during the descending from Mussoorie to Dehradun.
