In September, non-coking coal imports were 13.24 MT and coking coal at 3.39 MT. “There was a modest increase (month-on-month) in non-coking coal volumes in October as buyers took fresh positions during the festive month, and ahead of the winter season. Going forward, demand is likely to be moderate due to the anticipated growth in domestic supply during the fourth quarter (Q4),” mjunction MD & CEO Vinaya Varma said. Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy had recently urged the steel sector to reduce dependence on imported coal and make the required changes in technology. Criticizing the Congress for imposing the Emergency, he said the country had been turned into a prison, citizens’ rights were taken away and freedom of the press was curbed. Taking aim at the Congress, he said that from 1947 to 1952, there was no elected government in India, but a temporary, selected government in which no elections were held. He highlighted that before 1952, the Rajya Sabha was not constituted, and there were no state elections, meaning there was no mandate from the people.
He said that despite this, in 1951, without an elected government, an ordinance was issued to amend the Constitution, attacking the freedom of expression. The Prime Minister emphasized that this was an insult to the framers of the Constitution, as such matters were not addressed in the Constituent Assembly. He remarked that when the opportunity arose, he attacked freedom of speech, which was a serious insult to the framers of the Constitution. New Delhi: The gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio for scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) have improved significantly with a reduction to 2.67 per cent in June 2024 from 11.18 per cent in March 2018, according to the government. Moreover, SCBs recorded highest-ever aggregate net profit of Rs 23.50 lakh crore in FY2023-24, against a net profit of Rs 22.63 lakh crore in FY2022-23.
The asset quality of SCBs has improved significantly with the gross NPA ratio of SCBs declining to 2.67 per cent (Rs 4.75 lakh crore) in June-2024 from a peak of 11.18 per cent (Rs 10.36 lakh crore) in March 2018, informed the Ministry of Finance.
“Provision coverage ratio (PCR) increasing from 49.31 per cent in March 2015 to a healthy 92.52 per cent in June-24 shows increased resilience,” the ministry added.
Gross NPA ratio of PSBs declined to 3.32 per cent in June-24 from 4.97 per cent in March-2015 and from a peak of 14.58 per cent March-2018. Also, SCBs recorded highest ever aggregate net profit of 23.50 lakh crore in FY2023-24 against net profit of 22.63 lakh crore in FY2022-23.
A recent stress test result of the Reserve Bank of India revealed that SCBs are well-capitalised and capable of absorbing macroeconomic shocks even in the absence of any further capital infusion by stakeholders.
All banks would be able to meet the minimum regulatory common equity tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 5.5 per cent even under severe stress scenario, it showed.
Meanwhile, the gross NPA ratio of public sector banks (PSBs) declined to 3.12 per cent in September this year, from 4.97 per cent in March 2015 and from a peak of 14.58 per cent in March 2018.
The Ministry of Finance said in a statement that public sector banks (PSUs) recorded the highest ever aggregate net profit of Rs 1.41 lakh crore during FY2023-24, against net profit of Rs 1.05 lakh crore in FY2022-23, and recorded Rs 0.86 lakh crore in the first half of FY2024-25.
Backlash has been building in the United States following a news report that links one of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed cabinet members to an effort to revoke approval for the polio vaccine.
On Saturday, The Associated Press news agency published a statement from a spokesperson for Robert F Kennedy Jr, whom Trump has nominated to lead the Health and Human Services Department.
In the statement, Kennedy’s camp attempted to distance the nominee from a New York Times report that his lawyer Aaron Siri had petitioned to suspend approval for the life-saving vaccine.
“Mr Kennedy believes the Polio Vaccine should be available to the public and thoroughly and properly studied,” Katie Miller, Kennedy’s spokesperson, said.
But The New York Times article has raised alarm about Kennedy’s nomination to Health and Human Services, a department whose mission is to enhance the “health and well-being of all Americans”.
Kennedy, like Siri, is a vocal vaccine sceptic. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kennedy helped spread doubts about vaccines designed to protect against the deadly virus, calling them “shoddily tested” and potentially “deadly”.
And in 2019, when a measles outbreak killed more than 80 children in Samoa, Kennedy wrote to the Samoan prime minister implying that a “defective vaccine” could be to blame. He has also pushed conspiracy theories that link vaccination to autism, a widely debunked belief.
Kennedy has long denied being anti-vaccine, arguing instead that he simply wants to ensure vaccine safety. But members of his own family have spoken out against his track record of spreading vaccine misinformation.
A Trump ally
In the 2024 presidential race, Kennedy ran on an independent ticket, before suspending his campaign in August and throwing his support behind Trump.
Afterwards, he became a prominent Trump surrogate, appearing numerous times on the campaign trail with the Republican leader.
Trump, in turn, teased early on that he would nominate Kennedy to his administration.
“I’m going to let him go wild on health,” Trump said at an October campaign stop at Madison Square Garden in New York. “I’m going to let him go wild on the medicines.”
Trump’s decision to pick Kennedy to head Health and Human Services has raised concern in the medical community about the future of efforts to limit the spread of preventable illness.
Those concerns were amplified on Friday, with The New York Times report. The article resurfaced a 2022 petition Siri made to the Food and Drug Administration to rescind the polio vaccine’s approval, along with that of other vaccines.
Polio is a highly infectious disease, capable of causing paralysis and death. There is no cure once infected, but vaccines can prevent its spread.
Siri has enjoyed a close relationship with Kennedy. The two campaigned together during Kennedy’s bid for office, and NBC News reported that Kennedy mulled appointing Siri as his attorney general, had he succeeded in winning the White House.
Swift criticism
The backlash to Friday’s report was swift, with bipartisan condemnation pouring in.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, issued a statement on Friday warning that any effort to discredit the polio vaccine could threaten the nominee’s Senate confirmation hearing.
He did not mention Kennedy by name, but McConnell, 82, is known to be a survivor of childhood polio, which left his left leg briefly paralysed.
“Efforts to undermine public confidence in proven cures are not just uninformed — they’re dangerous,” McConnell wrote.
“Anyone seeking the Senate’s consent to serve in the incoming administration would do well to steer clear of even the appearance of association with such efforts.”
Democrats likewise criticised Kennedy’s association with Siri.
“Say goodbye to your smile and say hello to polio,” Senator Elizabeth Warren said in a video posted to social media. “This is a man who wants to stop kids from getting their polio and measles shots.”
Another senator, Chuck Schumer, called on Kennedy to make his position on the polio vaccine clear.
“It’s outrageous and dangerous for people in the Trump Transition to try and get rid of the polio vaccine that has virtually eradicated polio in America and saved millions of lives,” Schumer, the Senate majority leader, wrote. “RFK Jr. must state his position on this.”
Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee for the presidency and a longtime rival of Trump’s, posted her own rejoinder, with a screenshot of The New York Times article.
“I think Trump voters may be surprised to learn they voted to make polio great again,” she wrote, offering a riff on Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again”.

She is getting ready to make her own burial shroud because she is concerned about the environmental impact of traditional burials and cremations.
“I try so hard in my life to recycle and to use less, and to live in an environmentally friendly way, so I want my death to be that as well,” she adds.
A gas cremation produces the estimated equivalent carbon dioxide emissions of a return flight from London to Paris and around 80% of those who die in the UK are cremated each year, according to a report from carbon consultancy firm, Planet Mark.
But traditional burials can pollute too. Non-biodegradable coffins are often made with harmful chemicals and bodies are embalmed using formaldehyde: a toxic substance which can leach into soil.

In a recent survey from Co-op Funeralcare, conducted by YouGov, one person in 10 said they would want a more ‘eco-friendly’ funeral.
Rachel, from Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, made a burial shroud for a friend from locally-sourced wool, willow, bramble and ivy, as part of her work as an artist.
For years she has explored the themes of death, dying, grief and nature through crafts and functional objects.
But the 50-year-old sees the shroud, which can also remove the need for a coffin, as more than just artwork – and has since decided to make her own.
A common reaction from those who have seen the creation is to ask if they can touch it, to feel how soft it is.
For Rachel, it is the perfect way of helping people address the taboo topic of death.
She also works as a death doula, which involves supporting people who are dying, as well as their loved ones, to make informed funeral care choices.
“I find that when we talk about death, everybody I’ve met finds it a helpful and healthy thing, and something that is life-enriching,” she says.
“When somebody dies it is often so shocking. We just get on a treadmill of ‘this is what happens’, so I want to open up those conversations.
“I want more people to know there are options and that we don’t have to end up in a box.”
The practice of digging graves to a depth of 6ft (1.82m) dates back at least to the 16th Century and is believed to have been a precaution against plague.
When Rachel’s time comes, she wants a natural burial, which means using a biodegradable coffin or shroud in a shallower grave. The upper layers of soil contain more active microbes, so bodies can decompose in about 20 to 30 years, rather than up to 100 in a traditional grave.

Natural burial grounds are dotted across the UK and bear little resemblance to normal cemeteries – trees and wildflowers replace man-made grave markings, and no pesticides are used.
Embalming, headstones, ornaments, and plastic flowers are not allowed.

Louise McManus’ mother was buried last year at Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland, a natural site near Skipton. The funeral included an electric hearse, locally made wool coffin and flowers from her garden.
“She loved nature and being outside. She was concerned about what is happening to the environment and asked for her funeral to be as sustainable as possible,” Louise says.

Sarah Jones, the Leeds-based funeral director who organised the send-off, says demand for sustainability is growing.
Her business has expanded to four premises since opening in 2016 with a rise in sustainable funerals helping to drive that expansion.
She said from a “handful” of eco burials, such requests now make up about 20% of her business.
“More and more people are asking about it and want to make choices that are better for the planet. They often feel it reflects the life of the person who has died because it was important to them,” she says.

As with many eco-friendly industries, natural burials can cost more. Many grounds, including Tarn Moor, offer cheaper plots to locals. One in Speeton, North Yorkshire, is community-run and puts profits back into the village playground.
At Tarn Moor, a plot plus maintenance for Skipton residents costs £1,177. Non-locals are charged £1,818. The nearest council cemetery charges £1,200 for a grave while cremation costs here start at £896.
Getting to natural burial grounds can increase carbon footprint
Often away from urban areas and transport links, travelling to natural grounds for funerals, or to visit a grave, can involve a higher carbon footprint than more traditional sites, Planet Mark’s report points out.
Shroud-maker Rachel recognises these challenges but hopes for long-term change. She wants to see more local natural grounds and to normalise eco-friendly deathcare, while being respectful of others’ choices.
“In times gone by, women would arrive in their marital home with their shrouds as part of their dowry and they would be kept in the bottom drawer until they were needed,” she says.
“I don’t see why people can’t have their burial shroud just ready and waiting for them.
“I think it could be that normal, but everybody does need to have their own choices around it. It doesn’t have to be a certain way.”

NEW DELHI: In another significant action, Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday said it restituted properties worth Rs 4,025 crore to JSW, a successful resolution applicant of the erstwhile Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd, under corporate insolvency resolution process of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The assets were attached by ED in 2019 after a money laundering probe revealed that the erstwhile promoters of Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL) cheated banks and siphoned off funds to the tune of Rs 47,204 crore for private investments. A PMLA case was based on an FIR registered by CBI. “The accounts were fudged to show fake expenses/purchases/capital assets, and thereby, bank funds were taken out in the form of cash. The cash was brought into the books of various beneficially owned companies (held through employees/dummy directors), and the same, was utilised for investments in the form of shares and immovable properties,” ED said. The agency said after establishing money trail of the laundered proceeds of crime, it attached properties, including land, building and machinery, worth Rs 4,025 crore. Promoter Sanjay Singal was arrested on Nov 22, 2019, and a chargesheet was filed against him and the company in Jan 2020. A special court had taken cognisance of the case immediately, but trial is still pending for more than four years due to repeated adjournments sought by the accused. Further, ED attached assets worth Rs 427 crore held by various shell companies linked to the accused. A supplementary chargesheet is likely to be filed by the agency soon to begin the process of restitution of the remaining assets. The creditor banks had initiated corporate resolution under Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, and JSW was the applicant seeking assets for an amount of about Rs 19,350 crore, as against the outstanding loans of Rs 47,204 crore. Through an affidavit filed before Supreme Court, ED urged the apex court that it may direct handing over the attached assets to JSW and consider the same as restitution under PMLA. SC accepted the ED affidavit, and on Dec 11, ordered restitution of assets to JSW.

New Delhi: The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has achieved 15,547 crore transactions worth Rs 223 lakh crore from January to November this year, the Finance Ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry, in a social media post on X, stated that the UPI transaction figures showcase its transformative impact on financial transactions in India.With a social media hashtag, FinMinYearReview2024, on X, the ministry highlighted the significance of UPI, which is getting prominence in countries across the globe.
India’s digital payments revolution is gaining international momentum, with both UPI and RuPay expanding rapidly across borders. Currently, UPI is operational in seven countries, including key markets like the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius.UPI is a digital payment system that allows users to make instant money transfers between bank accounts.
