Apple Discontinues 13-Inch M2 MacBook Pro as 14-Inch M3 Model Becomes Base Variant: See Price Difference

Apple introduced its new line of MacBook Pro models, all powered by the company’s latest M3 chip, on Tuesday. At its ‘Scary Fast’ showcase event on the eve of Halloween, the Cupertino, California-based company took the covers off on 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops running on the new 3nm chipset. The new Apple laptops are already up for pre-order in 27 countries, including India, and will go on sale starting November 7. Apple, meanwhile, has already discontinued its lineup of M2-powered MacBook Pro models.

While the M3-powered Mac models are now up for pre-order, the new laptops’ M2 cousins are no longer listed on Apple’s website. This, of course, is not surprising as Apple usually discontinues select older-generation products after launching their refreshed versions. For example, iPhone 14 Pro models were halted after the company introduced the iPhone 15 series at its ‘Wonderlust’ showcase in September. Similarly, Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra were taken off Apple’s site when Series 9 and Ultra 2 models were unveiled at the same event.

This time, however, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops have replaced three previous models. The M2-powered 14-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros, launched earlier this year in January, have expectedly been discontinued. Additionally, Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro M2 model has also been taken off its website. Tipster Ishan Agarwal first spotted the development and posted about it on X on Tuesday.

This also means that the entry point pricing for a MacBook Pro in India has risen considerably. The now discontinued 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro started at Rs. 1,29,900 for the 256GB SSD storage variant. The 512GB storage variant, on the other hand, came in at Rs. 1,49,900. Now, with no 13-inch MacBook Pro model available, the lineup begins with the base variant of the new 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro, with 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD storage, listed at Rs. 1,69,900 on Apple store. This represents a difference of Rs. 40,000 between the starting prices for previous and current entry-level MacBook Pro models in India.

Both the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models come in M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max powered variants. The 14-inch variant with an M3 Pro chip starts at Rs. 1,99,900, while the M3 Max variant of the laptop comes in at Rs. 3,19,900.

While the pricing for an entry-level MacBook Pro has gone up, the new 14-inch Apple laptop represents a considerable upgrade over its M2-powered 13-inch predecessor. Built on 3‑nanometre technology and featuring a new GPU architecture, the M3 lineup brings processing and graphical improvements compared to the previous generation.

The company’s M3 family of processors are equipped with up to 16 CPU cores, up to 40 GPU cores, and up to 16 Neural Engine cores. All new Apple laptops also come with Liquid Retina XDR (3,024×1,964 pixels) displays with a 120Hz refresh rate. The base 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M3 chip can offer up to 22 hours of battery life on a single charge, Apple claims.

New York: Automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 208,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the US owing to an issue that could cause the vehicles to suddenly lose power. As per filings with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue is with the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that “may become damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can result in a loss of drive power.”

“Dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse, as necessary. In addition, dealers will update the ICCU software. All repairs will be performed free of charge,” said the recall notification on NHTSA website.

Hyundai is recalling over 145,000 Ioniq and Genesis vehicles, which includes some Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 vehicles. The recall also covers three electrified variants from its luxury brand Genesis, including the Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, and Genesis G80 from model years 2022-2025.

Nearly 62,872 Kia EV6 vehicles have also been recalled. Dealers will fix the issue for free. After the failure of the ICCU, a series of driver warnings appear, and the vehicle activates a “fail-safe” driving mode that slowly reduces drive power over the course of 20 to 40 minutes.

“A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash,” according to the recall notification. In 2021, over 80,000 Kona EVs were recalled due to a fire risk caused by an LG battery defect after reports of a dozen battery fires.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk-run Tesla recalled more than two million vehicles — almost all of the cars it sold in the US — due to incorrect font size on warning lights. The recall of almost 2.2 million vehicles included nearly all Tesla EV models, including Model S, Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, Model Y, and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles.

The NHTSA also noted that warning lights with a smaller font size can make critical safety information on the instrument panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash.

Alphabet‘s Google will begin experimenting with advertising within search results powered by generative artificial intelligence, the tech giant announced on Tuesday, as it seeks to fend off rival Microsoft in the lucrative search ads market.

Over the past few months, Google and Microsoft have supercharged a race to change how people search for information by infusing their search engines with generative AI, which can provide conversational written responses to queries, synthesize information online and surface relevant websites.

The AI capabilities will also alter how advertisers reach consumers through search engines, a market that is estimated to grow to $286 billion (roughly Rs. 23,65,700 crore) this year, according to research firm MAGNA.

For example, users can search “hiking backpacks for kids” on the new version of Google and the AI could respond with an ad for a particular backpack, along with tips for how to choose the best backpack for a child, Google said.

“This is a new, simpler and helpful way to interact with Google search,” said Jerry Dischler, vice president and general manager of ads, in an interview. “It’s going to be a great opportunity to deliver a delightful user experience that will lead to new commercial opportunities in the future.”

Google unveiled the new version of its search engine earlier this month, called Search Generative Experience, which will roll out over the coming weeks via a wait list.

The company will test the new ad placements using existing ads that appear on traditional Google searches, Dischler said.

During its annual Google Marketing Live event on Tuesday, Google also announced a new conversational chatbot that will assist brands with the process of creating ads.

Advertisers can input their website and the AI chatbot will recommend headlines, specific keywords and images to include in an ad to grab a consumer’s attention, Google said.

The tech giant already offers a tool that can automatically generate ads for brands. That tool will now have generative AI capabilities and can create ads based on the context of a user’s query, Google said.

If a consumer searches for products for dry and sensitive skin, Google could automatically create an ad for a skincare brand with the headline “soothe your dry, sensitive skin,” the company said.

While Google is the leader in search advertising, its new features come as Microsoft has moved quickly to be a challenger.

Microsoft has already begun testing ads in its Bing AI-powered search engine and held meetings with ad agencies as early as February.

Pune: In a last-minute move, the state excise department, on Sunday cancelled the permit for serving liquor at Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh’s musical concert in the Kothrud area of Pune city.

The decision comes after strong protests from the youth wing of the NCP party and senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil, along with some local residents and organisations, against serving liquor at the event.

Excise Department SP CB Rajput, while speaking to ANI, said, “We had received an application from the owner of the venue, and he had raised an objection, seeking that serving liquor should not be allowed at the concert. Therefore, acting on the application, we have denied permission to serve liquor at the concert, and the organisers of the concert have also been informed about it.”

NCP Pune President Deepak Mankar, in a press note shared by NCP officials, said, “We oppose Diljit Dosanjh’s program being held at Kakade Farm today, November 24. Due to this program, the citizens of Kothrud will face problems like the open sale of liquor, loud noise, and traffic jams. We demanded that the organisers cancel this program immediately. We are always against those who spoil the culture of Kothrud. If the concert is not canceled, an agitation will be launched on behalf of the Nationalist Congress Party against the event organisers.”

Senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil also said, “I am opposed to Diljit Dosanjh’s music concert to be held at Kakade Farm in Kothrud, Pune, as a local MLA and as a citizen. I am not only opposed to the sale of liquor, but also the traffic jams and loud noise caused by this event. I have given instructions to the Police Commissioner, Excise Department, and District Collector to cancel this event.”

“Such an event is a pest in society. If this event happens in Kothrud, a big march will be taken out on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and I will lead this march myself,” he added.

The concert was scheduled for 7 pm on the open ground of Suryakant Kakade Farms in Kothrud on Sunday.

Opposition to the concert also included concerns over sound pollution due to the installation of a large number of loudspeakers. Many protesters demanded the cancellation of the concert entirely.

To maintain law and order, police personnel were deployed at the venue of the event amidst protests.

Earlier this month, Diljit during his Ahmedabad concert stated that he would stop making songs on “sharab” if the government declared a nationwide ban on it.

“Jitni bhi states hai humare yaha, agar woh saari apne aap ko dry state ghoshith kardeti hai, agle hi din Diljit Dosanjh apni life mein kabhi sharab pe gaana nahi gayega. Main pran karta hoon. Hosakta yeh? (If all of India’s states declare themselves as dry states, then Diljit Dosanjh won’t ever sing songs on alcohol. I promise. Can that happen?),” he asked.

“Bohut bada revenue hai yeh. Corona mein sab bandh hogaya tha, theke bandh nahi huye the. Kya baatein karrahe ho aap? Aap youth ko fuddu nahi bana sakte (It’s a huge revenue source. During COVID-19, everything shut down except alcohol shops. What are you saying? You can’t fool the youth),” he added.

iQOO 13 is expected to launch soon with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. The Vivo sub-brand is yet to announce a launch date but details about the handset are appearing on the Web. A new leak coming out of China suggests that the upcoming handset will get a new chip and heat dissipation system with a single-layer motherboard. The initial launch of the iQOO 13 could take place in China in November and it is expected to launch in India in early December. The iQOO 13 is likely to draw power from a 6,150mAh battery.

A Weibo user familiar with the matter claims that the iQOO 13 will come with a new heat dissipation architecture with a single-layer motherboard for thermal management. The handset is said to boast a new VC heat sink as well (machine translated from Chinese).

The same user in a separate post states that iQOO 13 will feature the company’s self-developed Q2 chip for gaming. Last year’s iQOO 12 and iQOO Neo 9 series pack Supercomputing Chip Q1 and are advertised to enable 144fps (frames per second) gaming experience.

The iQOO 13 is tipped to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 2K resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. It could run Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC with up to 16GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. The handset is likely to carry a triple rear camera setup, led by a 50-megapixel primary camera alongside a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor and a 50-megapixel 2x telephoto camera. It could pack a 32-megapixel front camera.

iQOO 13 is said to ship with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor and a metal middle frame. It is said to pack a 6,150mAh battery with 100W fast charging support. It may have an IP68-rated build for water and dust resistance.
