Poco X7 Pro Could Be the First Smartphone to Ship With Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2 in India

Xiaomi’s new Android skin version — HyperOS 2.0 — was announced in China last month alongside the Xiaomi 15 series. While the company did not outline a rollout plan of its latest custom skin for devices in India, a new leak has hinted that the Poco X7 Pro will be the first to debut with HyperOS 2.0 in the country. The new Poco X series phone is rumoured to launch next month in India. The Poco X7 Pro is expected to arrive as a rebrand of the Redmi Note 14 Pro+. It is likely to offer upgrades over the Poco X6 Pro.

Smartprix, citing unnamed sources, reports that the Poco X7 Pro will be the first smartphone in India to launch with HyperOS 2.0 based on Android 15. It is expected to go official in December in the county.

In China, the Xiaomi 15 was the first to land with HyperOS 2.0 but its India launch is expected to take place only next year. Therefore, the Poco X7 Pro is believed to hit the Indian market ahead of the Xiaomi 15.

The Poco X7 Pro is speculated to come as a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 14 Pro+. It is expected to succeed the Poco X6 Pro.

Wicked and Gladiator make $164.2 mn global debut

Wicked and Gladiator make 4.2 mn global debut

'Wicked' and 'Gladiator II' make $164.2 million global debut; record third-biggest opening weekend of 2024

With a combined $270 million in worldwide ticket sales, “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” breathed fresh life into a box office that has struggled lately, leading to one of the busiest moviegoing weekends of the year.
Jon M. Chu’s lavish big-budget musical “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, debuted with $114 million domestically and $164.2 million globally for Universal Pictures, according to studio estimates Sunday. That made it the third-biggest opening weekend of the year, behind only “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2.” It’s also a record for a Broadway musical adaptation.
Ridley Scott‘s “Gladiator II,” a sequel to his 2000 best picture-winning original, launched with $55.5 million in ticket sales. With a price tag of around $250 million to produce it, “Gladiator II” was a big bet by Paramount Pictures to return to the Coliseum with a largely new cast, led by Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal. While it opened with a touch less than the $60 million predicted in domestic ticket sales, “Gladiator II” has performed well overseas. It added $50.5 million internationally. The collision of the two movies led to some echoes of the “Barbenheimer” effect of last year, when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” launched simultaneously. The nickname this time, “Glicked,” wasn’t quite as catchy and the cultural imprint was also notably less. Few people sought out a double feature this time. The domestic grosses in 2023 – $162 million for “Barbie” and $82 million for “Oppenheimer” – were also higher.
“Glicked” falls short of “Barbenheimer” For Universal, which distributed “Oppenheimer” last year, the weekend was more a triumph of “Wicked” than it was of “Glicked.”
“We saw an opportunity to dominate a weekend and get a very large running start into the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Jim Orr, distribution chief for Universal. “We’re very confident that it will play ridiculously well through the Christmas corridor and into the new year.”
But the counter-programming effect was still potent for “Wicked” and “Gladiator II,” which likewise split broadly along gender lines. And it was again the female-leaning release – “Wicked,” like “Barbie” before it – that easily won the weekend. About 72% of ticket buyers for “Wicked” were female, while 61% of those seeing “Gladiator II” were male.
“Standing on their own, each of these movies may have done pretty much what they did, but it’s hard to know,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. “Raising awareness can indeed lead to an increase in box office. Let’s put it this way: They didn’t hurt each other at all.”

Massive marketing campaigns paved the way for opening weekend While “Barbenheimer” benefitted enormously from meme-spread word-of-mouth, both “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” leaned on all-out marketing blitzes.
The “Gladiator II” campaign featured everything from a much-debated Airbnb cross-promotion with the actual Colosseum in Rome to simultaneously running a one-minute trailer on more than 4,000 TV networks, radio station and digital platforms.
The “Wicked” onslaught went even further, with pink and green themed “Wickedly Delicious” Starbucks drinks, Stanley mugs and Mattel dolls (some of which led to an awkward recall ). Its stars made appearances at the Met Gala and the Olympics.
“We had roughly 400 global brand partners on ‘Wicked,’ so the campaign was inescapable, said Orr. “And our cast, led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, worked so hard on this. They were everywhere. They did everything we asked them to do.”

Going into the weekend, box office was down about 11% from last year and some 25% from pre-pandemic times. That meant this week’s two headline films led a much-needed resurgence for theaters. With “Moana 2” releasing Wednesday, Hollywood might be looking at historic sales over the Thanksgiving holiday.
The two films boosted sluggish box office performance “This weekend’s two strong openers are invigorating a box office that fell apart after a good summer,” said David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter for Franchise Entertainment.
Though “Wicked” will face some direct competition from “Moana 2,” it would seem better set up for a long and lucrative run in theatres than “Gladiator II.” Though some have dinged “Wicked” for running long, at 2 hours and 40 minutes, the film has had mostly stellar reviews. Audiences gave it an “A” on CinemaScore. The reception for “Wicked” has been strong enough that Oscar prognosticators expect it to be a contender for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, among other categories.
Producers, perhaps sensing a hit, also took the step of splitting “Wicked” in two. Part two, already filmed, is due out next November. Each “Wicked” installation cost around $150 million to make.
“Gladiator II” has also enjoyed good reviews, particularly for Washington’s charismatic performance. Audience scores, though, were weaker, with ticket buyers giving it a “B” on CinemaScore. The film will make up for some of that, however, with robust international sales. It launched in many overseas markets a week ago, and has already accrued $165.5 million internationally.
Coming in a distant third place for the weekend was “Red One,” the Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans holiday movie turned action film. In its second week of release, the Amazon MGM Studios release grossed $13.3 million to bring its two-week global haul to $117 million. At a cost of $250 million to make, “Red One” is the season’s biggest flop, though it could recoup some value for Amazon if it’s more popular once it begins streaming.
Final domestic figures will be released Monday. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to Comscore:
1. “Wicked,” $114 million.
2. “Gladiator II,” $55.5 million.
3. “Red One,” $13.3 million.
4. “Bonhoeffer: Pastor Spy Assassin,” $5.1 million.
5. “Venom: The Last Dance,” $4 million.
6. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” $3.5 million.
7. “Heretic,” $2.2 million.
8. “The Wild Robot,” $2 million.
9. “Smile 2,” $1.1 million.
10. “A Real Pain,” $1.1 million.

Microsoft to Pay $20 Million to Settle US FTC Charges for Violating Children’s Privacy

Microsoft to Pay Million to Settle US FTC Charges for Violating Children’s Privacy

Microsoft will pay $20 million (roughly Rs. 163 crore) to settle US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that the tech company illegally collected personal information from children without their parents’ consent, the FTC said on Monday.

The company had been charged with violating the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting personal information from children who signed up to its Xbox gaming system without notifying their parents or obtaining their parents’ consent, and by retaining children’s personal information, the FTC said in a statement.

The order requires Microsoft to take steps to improve privacy protections for child users of its Xbox system. It will extend COPPA protections to third-party gaming publishers with whom Microsoft shares children’s data, the FTC said.

A Microsoft spokesperson said the company was committed to complying with the order. The spokesperson added the account creation process will be updated and a data retention glitch found in the company’s system will be resolved.

“Our proposed order makes it easier for parents to protect their children’s privacy on Xbox, and limits what information Microsoft can collect and retain about kids,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

“This action should also make it abundantly clear that kids’ avatars, biometric data, and health information are not exempt from COPPA,” Levine added.

The law requires online services and websites directed to children under 13 to notify parents about the personal information they collect and to obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting and using any personal information of the children.

From 2015 to 2020, Microsoft retained the data that it collected from children during the account creation process, even when a parent failed to complete the process, according to the complaint.

Epoch AI Launches FrontierMath AI Benchmark to Test Capabilities of AI Models

Epoch AI Launches FrontierMath AI Benchmark to Test Capabilities of AI Models

Epoch AI, a California-based research institute launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) benchmark last week. Dubbed FrontierMath, the new AI benchmark tests large language models (LLMs) on their capability of reseasoning and mathematical problem-solving. The AI firm claims that existing math benchmarks are not very useful due to factors like data contamination and AI models scoring very high scores on them. Epoch AI claims that even the leading LLMs have scored less than two percent on the new benchmark.

Epoch AI Launches FrontierMath Benchmark

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the AI firm explained that it collaborated with more than 60 mathematicians to create hundreds of origins and unpublished math problems. Epoch AI claims that these questions would take even mathematicians hours to solve. The reason behind developing the new benchmark was cited as the limitations with existing benchmarks such as GSM8K and MATH, where AI models generally score a high point.

The company claimed that the high scores achieved by LLMs are largely due to data contamination. This means the questions somehow were already fed into the AI models, resulting in them easily solving the questions.

FrontierMath solves the problem by including new problems that are unique and have not been published anywhere, mitigating the risks associated with data contamination. Further, the benchmark includes a wide range of questions including computationally intensive problems in number theory, real analysis, and algebraic geometry, as well as topics such as Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory. The AI firm says all the questions are “guess proof”, meaning they cannot be solved accidentally without strong reasoning.

Epoch AI highlighted that to measure AI’s aptitude, benchmarks should be created on creative problem-solving where the AI has to maintain reasoning over multiple steps. Notably, many industry veterans believe that the existing benchmarks are not sufficient to correctly measure how advanced an AI model is.

Responding to the new benchmark in a post, Noam Brown, an OpenAI researcher who was behind the company’s o1 model welcomed the new benchmark and said, “I love seeing a new eval with such low pass rates for frontier models.”

Diablo IV Already Has Two Expansions in Active Development, Blizzard Confirms

Diablo IV Already Has Two Expansions in Active Development, Blizzard Confirms

Diablo IV has just launched across all platforms, but that hasn’t stopped developer Blizzard from expanding its legacy. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, general manager Rod Fergusson confirmed that the studio already has two expansions in development. “As I sit here we’re about to launch the main game, we’re finishing up season one, we’re working on season two, we’re working on expansion one” he said, adding that development on the second major expansion was about to kick off. Diablo IV was designed keeping a live-service format in mind, substantial content will be added over time in seasons. This is a big upgrade compared to Diablo III’s model, released 11 years ago, which was left abandoned over that time.

In an earlier interview with IGN, Fergusson mentioned that Diablo IV’s expansions will feature narrative questlines, with some “richer context” being added around a season’s release, which will also follow a theme, resulting in new cosmetics and gameplay mechanics tailored toward it. The narrative itself will not extend the main campaign in any way and merely serves as extra stories set within the game’s open world. “Because that’s the nice thing about the world is that there are lots of stories you can still tell without having it be the Lilith/ Inarius story,” he said, at the time. In comparison, both Diablo II and Diablo III received one big expansion each, albeit continued support was provided through patches and content updates. The team plans to update Diablo IV for years, even introducing a battle pass that would simply contain cosmetic items.

Currently, Diablo 4 is in its pre-season stage, bringing in a shop with limited inventory for purchase. As season one rolls in, players can expect the battle pass and an even fuller shop that’s aligned towards a theme. The in-game shop is also touted to have an intelligence system behind it, which would largely recommend items based on whatever class you’re playing. The pre-season period will function as a testing period for that, as the team continues working on the major update.

Last week, Blizzard upped the stakes for Diablo IV’s more competitive player base, promising to immortalise the first 1,000 players to reach level 100 on Hardcore mode by engraving their names/ battle tags onto a statue of Lilith. Currently, there’s no word on where the statue will be kept or what they will be doing with it, but I’m assuming it’s in the main headquarters. For the uninitiated, the Hardcore Mode is basically a permadeath mode where your character gets deleted upon death, forcing you to recreate and start from the very beginning. The difficulty is also quite high on this one.

Back in May, the company also highlighted Diablo 4’s endgame progression, which is meant to keep the game enjoyable, long after the main campaign is done. You’ve got a Capstone Dungeon that lets you do repeated runs — in rising difficulties — as a means to collect a whole variety of loot and continue getting stronger. Nightmare Dungeons also return, letting you choose one out of 120+ dungeons in the Sanctuary and turn it into a harsher playfield. These can be activated by finding a Nightmare Sigil, which adds difficult objectives, increased enemy count, and portals that toss in monsters from other realms.

Diablo IV is out now on PC (via Battle.net), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.

iQOO 13 Front Design Revealed; Suggests Uniform Bezels, Flat Frame and Hole-Punch Display

iQOO 13 is expected to be officially unveiled in November. Although the Vivo sub-brand hasn’t yet confirmed when exactly the iQOO 12 successor will be announced, we already know quite a few things about the flagship. Most recently, we got a new picture showing the front design of the iQOO 13. The latest render is supposedly a direct capture of the phone’s display. The iQOO 13 is expected to be one of the first smartphones to pack the unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor.

A company executive on Weibo posted an image of iQOO 13 on Weibo, offering a look at its front design. It has flat sides with a centrally located hole punch cutout to house the selfie shooter. The display has uniform and slim bezels on all sides.

The executive stated in the comment section that the iQOO 13 will have a 2K display protected with a metal middle frame. The image further suggests that the handset will be launched on December 9 with OriginOS 5.

iQOO 13 Specifications (Expected)

For starters, the iQOO 13 is said to come with the unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. It is tipped to feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 2K resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. The handset is expected to come with up to 16GB RAM and up to 512GB storage.

The iQOO 13 could get a triple rear camera setup, led by a 50-megapixel primary camera alongside a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor and a 50-megapixel 2x telephoto camera. It could pack a 32-megapixel front camera. The new phone might include a new heat dissipation setup with a single-layer motherboard for thermal management. It could feature the company’s self-developed Q2 chip for gaming. It is tipped to carry a 6,150mAh battery with 100W fast charging support.

The Game Awards 2023 Nominees Announced: Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2 Lead the Pack

The Game Awards 2023 Nominees Announced: Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2 Lead the Pack

The Game Awards 2023 nominations are now out in the wild. Two of the biggest titles this year, Baldur’s Gate 3 and the more recent Alan Wake II lead the pack with a whopping eight nods each, including Game of the Year. Despite being considered one of the best years for gaming, the show host and organiser Geoff Keighley is sticking to his rule of including only six names for the prestigious award. The remaining GOTY contenders include Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Resident Evil 4 remake, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The latter two were big hits during the first half of the year, with Zelda players showing off their mechanical creations in the lands of Hyrule, while the RE4 PC players messed around with sultry mods.

HBO’s The Last of Us series was a no-brainer inclusion in the Best Adaptation category, thanks to a very faithful adaptation that focused on the humane aspects of a post-apocalyptic universe, in a way that resonated with both the new TV audience and fans of the original video game. The $1.36 billion (about Rs. 11,321) grossing The Super Mario Bros. Movie also competes in that field, alongside the Twisted Metal Peacock show, Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne, and the David Harbour-led Gran Turismo movie. Now that the actors’ strike is over, the performers will also be present at The Game Awards show, with my personal favourite Neil Newbon earning a Best Performance nod for his portrayal of Astarion the Vampire Spawn in Baldur’s Gate 3. We’ve also got Cameron Monaghan for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Ben Starr for Final Fantasy XVI, and Idris Elba for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty amongst others.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Review

It’s odd that Cyberpunk 2077 got nominated as the Best Ongoing Game, considering Phantom Liberty was simply post-launch expansion content and not a live-service experience. Over a 100 different games are spread across the list for The Game Awards 2023, with Nintendo emerging as the most-nominated publisher this year with 15 nominations.

As usual, the event will play host to countless game reveals and trailers, live musical performances, and its dedicated on-stage orchestra conducted by returning composer Lorne Balfe. The winners will be announced on December 7 (December 8 in India, running from 6am to 9:30am IST), live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. It will be available to stream across YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook Live, Instagram Live, and Kick. Fans can cast their votes until D-day through the official TGA website.

Apple Gets EU Warning to Stop Geo-Blocking on App, ITunes Stores

Apple was notified by the European Union that its geo-blocking practices are potentially in breach of consumer protection rules, adding to the iPhone maker’s regulatory issues in the bloc.

Apple’s App Store, iTunes Store and other media services unlawfully discriminate against European customers based on their place of residence, according to a European Commission statement on Tuesday.

The notification comes as Apple is facing the first-ever fine under the Digital Markets Act, or DMA, for failing to allow app developers to steer users to cheaper deals, Bloomberg News reported last week. That penalty is set to come months after the Cupertino, California-based company was hit with a €1.8 billion ($1.9 billion or roughly Rs. 16,033 crore) fine for similar abuses under the bloc’s traditional competition rules.

The geo-locating investigation was conducted together with a network of national consumer authorities and found Apple media services only allow users to use payment cards issued in the countries they registered their Apple accounts, according to the statement. The App Store also blocks users from downloading apps offered in other countries, the investigation found.

A spokesperson for Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

National regulators in the EU can issue fines for breaches of consumer protection law, and the bloc often works together with such bodies to flag problems.

Apple has one month to respond to the findings and propose remedies to address the geo-blocking practices, according to the statement.
