Vivo Introduces Android 15-Based Origin OS 5 With AI Capabilities: Features, Release Date


Vivo has introduced its latest operating system (OS) dubbed Origin OS 5 for its range of devices in China. The update is said to be based on Android 15 and bundles features like home and lock screen customisation, dynamic effects and an upgraded Little V assistant with new capabilities. Origin OS 5 also introduces a Dynamic Island-like functionality dubbed Atomic Island. Artificial intelligence (AI) features for video editing, real-time translation, and writing tools have also been rolled out.

Vivo Origin OS 5 Features

One of the most notable additions to the Vivo Origin OS 5 update is an upgraded Little V assistant. It brings a functionality similar to Google’s Circle-to-Search which enables the user to highlight a part of the screen by circling on it and toggling its visual lookup on the web. They can also save articles and videos on the assistant for quick access.

Vivo says its assistant can take calls on the user’s behalf and summarise it, take notes and provide transcription in multiple languages. It also brings writing tools which can be used in Atom Notes, Vivo Documents, and emails.

Origin OS 5 includes customisation options for home and lock screens, including situational wallpapers. Users can edit the lock screen and replace the control toggles. The look and feel of the OS can be tweaked using different materials, colours, layouts, and depth effects. Mood Wallpaper 2.0 has also been introduced with two special wallpapers: Fireworks Moment and Scenery of Mountains and Sea, which use AI for character recognition and dynamically adjust the scenery based on the time of day and weather conditions.

The vivo Sans Typeface has been enhanced for improved readability. Vivo has also introduced Greek and Cyrillic writing systems, covering up to 26 languages.

Changes have also been made to apps such as Weather, which now provides dynamic visuals based on the conditions. It can display dynamic rain and snow weather components.

The AI capabilities of Origin OS 5 include dialect-text translation which can recognise content of multiple dialects in the spoken voice and convert it to Mandarin. It can also support Chinese sentences into sign language using sign language recognition and virtual sign language generation. Leveraging the smartphone’s AI assistant, users can take pictures and ask information about it in real time.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth features the biggest map in the Yakuza franchise. Marking the series’ first venture outside of Japan, the upcoming title will transport players to the tourist hotspot of Hawaii — Honolulu City, to be exact. Developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio claims that the vast new stage is more than three times the size of Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s Isezaki Ijincho, the suburb where the afro-haired Kasuga Ichiban was introduced. That means, the Hawaii map is nearly nine times the size of the Kamurocho district, the series’ primary Japanese setting punctuated by shops, restaurants, and nightclubs, where we dabbled in action-packed illicit acts through the eyes of Kazuma Kiryu, the series’ main protagonist who keeps getting pulled back into the life of crime.

As part of the announcement, RGG Studio revealed some key locations worth visiting in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, starting with Aloha Beach, the lively sun-baked shoreline where players can even head out swimming. Then there’s the Anaconda Shopping Center for Yakuza fans to fulfil their arcade gaming needs and grab a quick snack, followed by the bustling Chinatown area that’s lush with steaming food stalls, markets, and the Nirvana Bank Hotel, where only the wealthiest folk dwell. As a revered tourist location, the Waiki Town area is the place to go to buy souvenirs, District 5 to engage with the local mafia, and Little Japan is the spot for delectable sushi for when our heroes feel homesick. Yep, we’ve got two protagonists this time, as Ichiban Kasuga is sent to Hawaii under the promise of reuniting with his mother, only to meet with Kazuma Kiryu, who challenges him to a ‘final battle.’

A story trailer from September revealed that Kiryu had been battling cancer, in addition to dealing with the complexities of old age. In a way, it seems like RGG Studio is retiring Kiryu from the lead role, which also explains why the new age of Yakuza games were rebranded as ‘Like a Dragon’ in the West. As such, the gameplay also witnessed a huge transition, going from the overexaggerated real-time action combat to a turn-based affair, akin to the Persona series of games. As usual, anything goes in these battles, so feel free to use environmental objects as your weapon, such as a car battery to electrocute foes, summon muscley Poundmates to pummel enemies, blast them with a car crash, and even pull off cinematic tag-team moves. And of course, food items grant temporary stat bonuses for when you’re in a pickle.

Hoverbikes to traverse the streets, pizza delivery minigames, and Karaoke sessions are also part of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama described the title as a ‘monster class’ of a game, adding that if one were to play it continuously, they’d get sick. “This means that a lot of people are going to hesitate to play the game or will end up having it wait on their shelves. I found the possibility of that kind of outcome sad, so I thought, we have to get everyone hyped up enough to play it,” he said in an interview. To combat that, the studio opted for a festival-like atmosphere, which he believes would urge players to finish it within a week to a month, ‘even at the cost of their health.’

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is out January 25 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.

PSI researchers, including Mahir Dzambegovic, highlighted the material’s charge order state, where electrons form an organised pattern, producing a magnetic effect that breaks TRS at -144.67 °F.

The discovery of TRS breaking at such temperatures presents significant implications for quantum computing and storage. The ability to maintain these effects at higher temperatures could make quantum technologies more feasible outside of laboratory settings, according to PSI’s team. Notably, the TRS-breaking properties of RbV3Sb5 are tunable, with effects varying based on the material’s depth, from surface to core.

Future studies are expected to further explore the tunability of Kagome superconductors, particularly focusing on the interplay between superconductivity and TRS-breaking effects in RbV3Sb5. The study, published in Nature Communications, marks a step toward achieving practical quantum devices capable of operating in more energy-efficient conditions.

The chief scientist for Facebook-owner Meta on Tuesday said that generative AI, the technology behind ChatGPT, was already at a dead end, instead promising new artificial intelligence resembling human rationality.

“Today AI and machine learning really sucks. Humans have common sense, machines don’t,” Yann LeCun told reporters at a Meta launch event in Paris.

LeCun spoke as Meta announced its latest AI project — called image-based Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture, or JEPA.

The project seeks to move beyond ChatGPT-like generative AI and give machines the ability to conceptualize abstract ideas and not just regurgitate what exists online.

“Generative models are the past, we will abandon them in favor of joint embedding predictive architecture,” LeCun said, touting the Meta project he will lead.

“My prediction is that in a few years, generative large language models will not be used any more, we will have a better thing to replace them,” he added.

LeCun is considered a major thinker on AI and has been a critic of the hype around the generative AI models that power ChatGPT or the image-based Dall-E since they launched last year.

LeCun believes that the fears and excitement surrounding generative AI grossly inflate its actual capabilities.

In a Facebook post, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the JEPA tool was open source, meaning it would be available to researchers to tinker with.

He said the aim was to develop AI that “more closely reflects how people understand the world.”

“We need models that perceive the world and make predictions. This research is another step in that direction,” Zuckerberg added.

Compared to its rivals, Meta has taken a more discrete approach to ChatGPT-style AI for its social media platforms Facebook and Instagram.

Meta infused generative AI in its products, but without the same publicity as Microsoft or Google.

Earlier reports suggested that chat bubbles could soon feature in a mini multitasking dock on tablets. However, there’s now news of a hidden development that would allow both smartphone and tablet users to use any app in a floating window. While this may seem minor, it has the potential to change how we use the Recents screen and improve the multitasking experience on smartphones.

Android Authority has reported on a feature currently hidden in the first quarterly platform release of Android 15. Mishaal Rahman, known for uncovering numerous upcoming Android updates, has discovered references to a “bubble anything” feature in the Beta 2 release of this version.

Upon activating the feature, Rahman claims that the Pixel Launcher adds a new “bubble” button in the context menu, which pops-up upon long-pressing on any app on the home screen. Selecting this “bubble” option launched the selected app in a floating bubble (or a floating window).

Rahman points out that a previously discovered bubble bar feature, which brings all bubbled chat conversations in a small dock (only on tablets), can turn this newly discovered feature into an improved multitasking experience on Android devices.

Many Chinese smartphone brands already provide the option to run apps in floating windows, making Google’s recent discovery of support for this feature less thrilling for Android users in the East. In fact, software on Chinese devices like OnePlus and Realme even allows users to share content directly from an app into a floating window, which can be closed or minimised after interaction. However, users can typically open only one or two apps in this floating window mode at a time, depending on the device.

Regardless, it is nice to see Google adding support for this at the source. It will be interesting to see how it changes the way we use bubbles on Android, as it can potentially replace the current Recents screen which is used for switching between apps open in the background on smartphones and tablets. App bubbles, (instead of chat bubbles) clearly adds another multitasking layer on smartphones, so things might get a bit confusing to use. The source also claims that since this is a significant change, Google could reserve it for Android 16, instead of launching it with Android 15. We’ll have to wait to find out what Google has in store for us.

Generative AI technology that can spin authoritative prose from text prompts has captivated the public since ChatGPT launched six months ago and became the fastest-growing app of all time. AI has also become a focus of concern over its ability to create deepfake pictures and other misinformation.

“Alarm bells over the latest form of artificial intelligence – generative AI – are deafening. And they are loudest from the developers who designed it,” Guterres told reporters. “We must take those warnings seriously.”
