Bing Chat Gets New iOS Widget, Expand Text-to-Speech Support to More Indian Languages


Microsoft announced new features and improvements to its AI-powered chatbot Bing Chat on Friday. Now, iPhone and iPad users can access Bing Chat through a dedicated iOS widget. This would allow users to directly engage with the chatbot without opening the app. Bing Chat already have a widget on Android. Additionally, Microsoft has expanded text-to-speech support for more than 30 additional languages including Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu and Urdu. The latest update also brings improvement to the performance of the voice input button on the app.

Microsoft, via a blog post on Friday, announced the arrival of new features to Bing Chat. As mentioned, the company has introduced a Bing Chat iOS widget. This iOS widget would allow iPhone and iPad users to initiate a chat from their Home screen without opening the app. This feature is already available for Android users.

Further, the company is expanding voice language support for Bing Chat. It has released text-to-speech support for Indian languages like Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Languages including Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Marathi, Norsk Bokmal, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Ukrainian will also get text-to-speech support.

Additionally, Microsoft has added an improvement to the performance of the voice input button on the Bing mobile app for iOS and Android. With this update, Bing Chat will now indicate that it is listening instantly after you tap it.

Microsoft continues to upgrade Bing Chat by releasing new features and improvements at regular intervals. Last month, the company rolled out a chat history feature for Bing Chat. This functionality displays previous chat threads with the AI chatbot on the right of the chat window. Users can also rename, delete, export, or even share a chat thread with others. The AI chatbot allows users to exclude records of conversations related to files on the PC and accompany responses with charts and visualisations.

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting the last major update before developer CD Projekt Red moves on to the next project. Dubbed ‘Update 2.1,’ the patch finally brings the long-requested metro system, the ability to hang out with romantic partners, radios, and a ton of quality-of-life changes. It drops alongside the Ultimate Edition on December 5 at 4:30pm IST in India/ 12pm CET in Europe. Bear in mind that this is a free downloadable update, so it won’t be included natively in the physical disc versions releasing on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. That said, the 2.0 Update released in September will be included across all versions, entirely overhauling the perk system and adding a range of tech augmentations, which weren’t present in the original 2020 version.

Once the update goes live, the protagonist V will be able to access the in-game metro service to travel between 19 destinations, punctuated across five railway lines. The public transit system can be accessed via a special card, and the players themselves can chill out on the seats and soak in the sights of Night City, amongst other NPC passengers busy staring at screens or napping. The feature was originally shown in the Cyberpunk 2077 cinematic trailer and three years later, becomes finally accessible after finishing the Konpeki Plaza sequence. Of course, one can always skip the travelling cutscene and just jump into the next location once the immersion starts getting repetitive. Your pocket will also be filled with a radio system, which lets you scroll through multiple frequencies and listen to the music you like while walking through the streets and in vehicles. The music will turn off during dialogue sequences, though.

Since its launch, Cyberpunk 2077 players have expressed their desire to just hang back and spend quality time with their in-game romantic partners. That’s now possible in Update 2.1, with V having the option to invite back people to ‘any of the apartments’ for an unlimited number of times, as long as the romance path has been completed successfully. Another thing that’s replayable is car races, which can be accessed by visiting red flag icons scattered across the map, to make big eddies. One must complete ‘The Beast in Me’ quest for this section to unlock, with CD Projekt Red claiming that the enemy racers’ AI has been made significantly smarter to make these experiences more thrilling and challenging. Adding to the immersion are sightseeing binoculars that let you observe various scenic vistas in the world of Cyberpunk.

Other major improvements include not-so-clunky bike combat, minor bug fixes, and better boss fights. It’s unclear what the developer means by that, though the patch notes detail that the ruthless Adam Smasher can now activate the Sandevistan perk, letting him blink around the map and get close to you before slashing down. A range of visual and lighting enhancements, weapon balance changes, new bikes to purchase, and vehicular tricks are all available in Update 2.1 — a complete list of which you can browse in the official blog post. Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky launch in 2020, characterised by low framerates and bugs, forcing the developer to fix the game in the following years through numerous patches and hotfixes. It is in a far better state now, with the Phantom Liberty expansion earning it nominations in The Game Awards 2023.

A recent analysis of 38-year-old data from NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft has provided fresh insights into the unique magnetosphere of Uranus, according to a study published on November 11 in Nature Astronomy. During Voyager 2’s 1986 flyby, Uranus’ magnetosphere was found to be unexpectedly distorted by a blast of solar wind. The findings suggest that the planet’s magnetic field behaves unlike any other in the solar system.

Findings Highlight Unusual Magnetic Structures

Jamie Jasinski, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology, and lead author of the study, noted that Voyager 2’s timing happened to coincide with an intense solar wind event, a rare occurrence near Uranus. This compression of Uranus’s magnetosphere, seen only around 4% of the time, is thought to be responsible for the unique measurements Voyager captured. Had the spacecraft arrived even a week earlier, Jasinski observed, these conditions would likely have been different, possibly leading to alternative conclusions about Uranus’s magnetic characteristics.

Unlike Earth, Uranus exhibits a complex “open-closed” magnetic process, influenced by its extreme axial tilt. This tilt subjects Uranus to highly variable solar wind effects, resulting in a magnetosphere that opens and closes cyclically.

Implications for Future Uranus Exploration

The study’s conclusions go beyond Uranus itself, offering insights into the magnetic behaviours of its outermost moons, including Titania and Oberon. These moons, it turns out, lie within Uranus’s magnetosphere rather than outside it, making them candidates for investigations into subsurface oceans through magnetic field detection. As Jasinski highlighted, these conditions would simplify detecting any magnetic signatures that suggest liquid beneath the moons’ icy surfaces.

While Voyager 2 remains the only mission to visit Uranus, the study’s findings underscore a growing interest in exploring the ice giant in greater detail.

Microsoft said on Friday that the outages that affected certain services of the company through some of the earlier days of this month were the result of cyberattacks, but said it saw no evidence of any customer data being accessed or compromised.

“Beginning in early June 2023, Microsoft identified surges in traffic against some services that temporarily impacted availability'” the company said in a blog post.

Microsoft said it opened an investigation and began tracking the DDoS activity by the threat actor it refers to as Storm-1359 after it identified the threat.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request by Reuters as to whether the company had identified the party responsible for the attack.

DDoS attacks work by directing high volumes of internet traffic towards targeted servers in a relatively unsophisticated bid to knock them offline.

Microsoft’s 365 software suite, including Teams and Outlook, were down for more than two hours for over thousands of users on June 5 and a brief recurrence the following morning. That was the fourth such outage for Microsoft in a year.

Earlier this month, the company said it had restored its online services after an outage affected thousands of users of its 365 software suite, including Teams and Outlook, for more than two hours.

Access to its productivity software such as Word and Excel was down for nearly 18,000 users at its peak before easing to 906 at around 12:57 p.m. ET, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks internet outages.

At the time, the tech company had said it had rolled back a system update to resolve the outage, without providing any detail.

In January, Microsoft was hit with a networking outage that took down its cloud platform Azure along with services such as Teams and Outlook, potentially affecting millions of users globally.

    Qualcomm debuted the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 processor for the mobile platform in India at the Snapdragon for India event in July as a budget-friendly 5G chipset. Now, Xiaomi will likely become the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to launch a handset with this new chipset. The purported handset is touted as an entry-level offering and is expected to be unveiled in India next week at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024.

    Xiaomi Smartphone With Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 SoC

    Xiaomi smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 processor under the hood could launch at the IMC 2024 on October 16. While exact specifics remain unknown, the report suggests this device may be equipped with a 6.7-inch LCD screen with HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 90Hz. This could be a joint announcement but no other details are known at the moment. 

    For optics, it may sport a 50-megapixel primary rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter on the front. The handset is speculated to be backed by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W charging. It could be powered by Xiaomi’s MIUI skin based on Android 14.

    Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 Specifications

    With the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset, Qualcomm says it will target $99 (roughly Rs. 8,200) entry-level 5G smartphones in India. It sits below the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 in Qualcomm’s mobile processor lineup for the country.

    It is built on a 64-bit architecture sporting a Qualcomm Kryo CPU with eight cores: two for performance and six for efficiency. The performance cores have a peak clock speed of 2.0 GHz, while the six efficiency cores are capped at 1.8 GHz. it also gets an Adreno GPU onboard, which offers support for OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.1 and OpenCL 2.0 APIs. The processor is fabricated using a 4-nanometre process.

    As per Qualcomm, devices powered by this chipset support the inclusion of LPDDR4x RAM clocked at up to 2133 MHz and up to UFS 3.1 onboard storage. The chipset’s 12-bit Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP) can support up to 84-megapixel single camera sensors. It has also been equipped with full-HD+ displays with up to 90Hz refresh rate.

    iOS 17.2 RC and macOS Sonoma 14.2 RC are now rolling out to users on the public beta update channel. These release candidate beta versions of Apple’s upcoming operating systems for iPhone and Mac computers will bring new features and functionality — including the Journal app on iOS and Contact Key Verification for iMessage. Meanwhile iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models will gain support for Qi2 chargers, but Apple Music does not include support for collaborative playlists on the latest RC version.

    Apple’s release notes for the latest iOS 17.2 RC confirm that the Journal app — designed to help users start journaling their experiences regularly — will make its way to the final version. It was present on previous beta versions and Gadgets 360 recently spent some time with the app, which uses machine learning to prompt you to add journal entries. Apple says that journal entries are encrypted, can be protected via Face ID or Touch ID, and sync securely via iCloud.

    iOS 17.2 RC and macOS Sonoma 14.2 RC also bring new features to the Messages app. These include a new catch-up arrow in the top-right corner of the screen that allows users to quickly navigate to the first unread message, as well as he ability to add stickers to a message via a context menu. Apple will also let you customise your Memoji with additional physical attributes, while the Sensitive Content Warning feature will also protect you from nudity in stickers.   

    A new security feature coming to Messages called Contact Key Verification will help users remain aware that they are chatting with their intended recipients. Apple says it will provide Contact Verification Codes and automated alerts for users facing “extraordinary digital threats” — similar features are available on apps like Signal and WhatsApp.

    Some hardware-related improvements are also coming to Apple’s devices. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series of smartphones gain support for Qi2 chargers, while bugs related to wireless charging in some vehicles have been ironed out, according to the company. iOS 17.2 also adds support for a “Default Alerts” setting under Settings > Sounds & Haptics that allows you to set a default notification tone for apps on your iPhone.

    Apple Music is gaining two new features — a favourite songs playlist and the ability disable the use of listening history while using a specific Focus mode. However, it appears that Apple has not included the Collaborative Playlists feature on the iOS 17.2 RC, even though it was present on previous beta versions.

    Other features in iOS 17.2 RC update include the ability to AirDrop boarding passes, movie tickets, and some passes. Users can also access and log health data using Siri, set a new digital clock widget in StandBy mode, and use new Weather app features and AutoFill features, according to the company.

    While Apple hasn’t revealed when it plans to roll out the stable versions of iOS 17.2 and macOS Sonoma 14.2 to users, these updates are expected to arrive later this month. The release candidate versions are essentially the same builds that are rolled out to customers, so users can expect to see the same features to be available on their devices when the updates arrive in the coming days or weeks.

    BSNL Launches Fibre-Based Intranet TV Service With Over 500 Live Channels in India


    Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the launch of the first fibre-based intranet TV service in select regions in India. This service, dubbed IFTV, was first introduced last month alongside the unveiling of the state-owned telecommunications provider’s new logo and six other new facilities. It utilises BSNL’s fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network to provide users with live TV services with clear visuals and a Pay TV facility.

    Notably, this development comes after the operator also launched the national Wi-Fi roaming service which allows its customers to access high-speed internet at BSNL hotspots across the country, minimising their data cost.

    BSNL IFTV Service

    In a post on X (formerly Twitter), BSNL highlighted that its new IFTV service will enable customers in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to enjoy over 500 live TV channels in high streaming quality. Furthermore, it will also offer Pay TV content, unlike other live TV services offered by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel where the data consumed by streaming is deducted from the monthly quota, this will not be the case with BSNL IFTV.

    The operator says data used for TV streaming is independent of their data packs and will not be deducted from the FTTH pack. Instead, it will offer unlimited data for streaming. The live TV service is said to be exclusively available to BSNL FTTH customers at no extra cost.

    BNSL confirms it will also bring support for popular OTT platforms and streaming apps such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix, YouTube, and ZEE5. additionally, it will offer games too. However, the operator says that its IFTV service is currently only compatible with Android TVs. Customers with TVs running Android 10 or later can download the BSNL Live TV app from the Google Play Store.

    To subscribe to BSNL’s IFTV service, customers can download the BSNL Selfcare app from the Play Store and register for it.

    This move builds upon the company’s introduction of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service earlier this year and is in line with its three key goals: to provide services securely, affordably, and reliably.
