IPL 2026: CSK win their first match of the season; Beat DC by 23 runs

The Chennai Super Kings beat the Delhi Capitals by 23 runs to get their first win of the season. CSK put on 212 at the end of their first innings and later defended it against the DC side.

Chasing 213 to win, KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka gave the visitors a good start. Nissanka scored 41 runs in 24 balls before being dismissed by Anshul Kamboj. KL Rahul too got a start as he scored 18 runs in 10 balls before returning to the pavilion.

DC lost 4 wickets in 4 overs to finish with 91/4 at the halfway stage of the innings. David Miller and Tristan Stubbs were at the crease chasing a big target, and there was hope for DC; however, Miller was bowled by Jamie Overton to put the visitors under more pressure.

Stubbs was the lone fighter in the DC team, scoring 60 runs in 38 balls, but his dismissal in the 19th over sealed the match for CSK. Ashutosh Sharma scored a fighting 19 off 10 balls, but it was not enough as CSK got their first win of the season.

For CSK, Jamie Overton was the star with the ball, taking 4 wickets for just 18 runs from his four overs. The English pacer played a big role in giving CSK their first win of the season.

Sanju Samson set up CSK`s win in the first innings

Earlier, Sanju Samson scored his maiden century for the Chennai Super Kings as he finally announced his arrival in front of a packed MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Samson`s brilliant innings of 113 runs took CSK to 212 at the end of their innings against Delhi Capitals.

Sanju Samson was well supported by Ayush Mhatre, and the duo stitched together a partnership of 113 runs before Mhatre retired out after scoring 59 runs off 36 balls.

Shivam Dube joined Samson in the middle for the final part of CSK`s innings, and the duo took CSK to 212 runs at the end of 20 overs.

This win gets CSK off the bottom of the table, while DC lose two matches in a row in the IPL 2026.

NEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals manager Romi Bhinder was spotted using a mobile phone in the team’s dugout during his team’s game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati on Friday, violating the PMOA (Players and Match Officials Area) protocol by doing so. The incident occurred during the 11th over of the RR chase when Bhinder was using his phone and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, sitting to his right, was peeping at his screen.

According to the “PMOA PROTOCOL – 2026” published on the IPL‘s official website, a manager may carry a phone, but using it in the dugout is not permitted. Here’s what the protocol says:PHONESMobile Phones and other electronic communications equipment are not allowed to be used in the PMOA other than for a few members of the team.* The Team Manager may use a phone in the Dressing Room area but NOT in the DugoutBesides the team manager, the media manager is allowed to have a phone in the PMOA area, but usage is clearly defined in the protocol, which was published before the tournament got underway. Bhinder could face trouble for the act and may well be summoned by the match referee and anti-corruption unit. The incident has now gone viral on social media timelines, and it remains to be seen how the IPL Governing Council addresses it. “Managers and media managers carry the phone but the rules regarding its use are very clear. Using it in the dugout is a serious lapse because Romi was sitting next to players who looked at his screen when he was scrolling. There is no grey area here and now it’s up to the officials to investigate the matter,” says an IPL official.IPL founding chairman Lalit Modi also made a post on X regarding the incident, urging the Governing Council to take “IMMEDIATE ACTION”.Dressing Rooms, Players’ external match viewing areas, TV/Third Umpire area, Match Referee’s room, Players’ and Match Officials’ dining areas, Dugouts, Any other area identified by the BCCI Anti-Corruption and Security Manager are all part of the PMOA, and two BCCI Anti-Corruption Managers, appointed by the Head of the BCCI Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) are responsible for ensuring proper arrangements at least 30 minutes before the teams’ arrivals. Before entering the field, players and support staff deposit their phones and retrieve them only after the game concludes. Only a few team members are allowed to use phones or other communication devices, but the usage guidelines are clearly listed in the PMOA protocol document.

Jana Nayagan leak: Tamil superstar Vijay’s final film as an actor, Jana Nayagan, has been leaked online ahead of its theatrical release, sending shockwaves across the industry. The film was set for release in Janaury 9 but did not receive CBFC clearance and has been in limbo for three months. Actor Vijay Deverakonda has now reacted to the leak, condemning piracy and sharing that he has faced a similar situation early in his career. Taking to his X account, Vijay said, “The #JanaNayagan leak makes me angry. I’ve experienced personally the pain and sense of loss when something like this happens, early in my career. You feel like a target, you feel a loss of hope, it’s not just about me, there are co-actors, directors, producers, and so many who have all their dreams on the line.”

He continued, “This current issue needs to get sorted Asap and the people behind it identified, and if it doesn’t it reflects a systemic failure. It keeps reminding us how insensitive people can be, and the extent some will go to cause harm without a second thought. I send my thoughts and my unconditional support to the entire team of the film.”

Although he did not name which film of his faced a similar issue of piracy, parts of Vijay’s 2018 film Taxiwaala were leaked online months before its release.

The leak, which comes just before Vijay’s entry into politics with the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, has rattled the Tamil film industry. Several stars from the film industry, from Chiranjeevi to Sivakarthikeyan, Suriya to GV Prakash Kumar, Khushbu Sundar to Karthi have come out in support of Vijay and the makers of the film, and condemned the act of piracy.

About the film

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, alongside Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani. Billed as Vijay’s final film before he takes the political plunge, the political thriller was slated to release in January 9 but had to be postponed after the CBFC failed to certify it in time.

The makers of the film, KVN Productions, have now issued an official statement on the issue, warning anyone who shares, downloads or forwards the film. An investigation is underway on the leak of the film.

R Vaishali stuns Goryachkina to take sole lead in Candidates

Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali continued her remarkable run and defeated Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia in the 11th round of the Women’s Candidates tournament here on Saturday.

With her fourth victory in the event, Vaishali took her tally to an impressive seven points from 11 games. For Russian Goryachkina, the loss virtually ended her chances in the event as she remained on five points, two adrift of the tournament leader.

Vaishali’s victory also ensured that she stretched her lead by a full point over nearest rivals Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine and Jiner Zhu of China who were both held to draws by Kateryna Lagno of Russia and Divya Deshmukh respectively.

Playing white, Goryachkina surprisingly employed the London system in this key game and Vaishali played nonchalantly in the opening to get close to an equal position in the early middle game.

The Russian wanted to complicate matters after an early exchange of Queens but Vaishali proved she was far ahead in the calculation on this day as she matched Goryachkina move for move and pounced on a creative idea that entailed trapping of white’s rook right in the middle of the board.

Vaishali lost just one pawn and a minor piece in the bargain and in the resulting position her technique was immaculate to romp home.

It may be recalled that Vaishali started off very slowly in the event drawing the first four games followed by a loss against Jiner Zhu of China but since the sixth round has scored as many as four wins and two draws which also means she is peaking at the right time.

In the open section, Vaishali’s younger brother R Praggnanandhaa continued to struggle as he missed out on a simple tactic to score a victory over Matthias Bluebaum of Germany.

Hikaru Nakamura of United States played out a draw with Wei Yi of China with both conceding that they were out of the race while Dutchman Anish Giri also played out a draw with Andrey Esipenko of Russia.

Tournament leader by almost a mile, Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan fought hard to get a draw with pre-tournament favourite Fabiano Caruana of United States to take his tally to a nearly unassailable 8.5 points.

For the chess pundits, the tournament is almost over as Javokhir enjoys a two point lead over Giri with just three rounds to come.

Duty on diesel exports hiked from Rs 21.5/L to Rs 55.5

NEW DELHI: Govt on Saturday significantly increased export duties on diesel and aviation turbine fuel to dissuade oil refiners from exporting these fuels and to ensure adequate availability in the domestic market amid ongoing tensions in West Asia. The ministry of finance issued a series of notifications hiking the export duty on diesel by more than 150% – from Rs 21.5 per litre to Rs 55.5 per litre – with immediate effect. The levy on ATF, or jet fuel, was increased from Rs 29.5 per litre to Rs 42 per litre. The export duty on petrol continues to be nil. Under the revised structure, the special additional excise duty on high-speed diesel has been raised to Rs 24 per litre, while the road and infrastructure cess now stands at Rs 36 per litre, which means a large chunk will now flow to the Centre. Govt said these duties are not meant to boost revenue, but to stop fuel exporters from taking undue advantage of price differences. The Centre had, on March 27, imposed an export duty of Rs 21.5 per litre on diesel and Rs 29.5 per litre on ATF in a bid to check windfall gains, as fuel was in short supply in international markets due to a squeeze on energy supplies amid the military conflict and export curbs imposed by China. It had also slashed excise duty on diesel and petrol to shield consumers and oil companies from the impact of high crude prices. Retail prices of automobile fuels in India have not increased despite high volatility in the international crude market, while only a small part of the international price pressure has been passed on to domestic flights. The windfall tax on exports of diesel and ATF helps the Centre partly offset the impact of the excise duty cut. On March 27, govt had estimated revenue gains from export duties at around Rs 1,500 crore in a fortnight. The further hike in export duties is likely to lead to higher revenue gains. In a statement, the ministry of petroleum had said, “At a time when international diesel prices have surged sharply, the levy is designed to disincentivise exports and ensure that refinery output is directed first tow-ards meeting domestic demand.“

The incident occurred on the first delivery of the seventh over. Gurjapneet Singh was bowling to Patel. It was a short and wide delivery outside the off stump. Axar pushed to his back foot and cut that in the air and towards the backward point region. Sarfaraz Khan, who was waiting, dived to his right and was airborne for a few seconds as he completed the catch. Immediately after taking the catch, the Mumbai batter broke off in a sprint around the ground amongst the cheer of the home crowd.

CSK batted first in the match and was carried by their star inclusion for the season, Sanju Samson. He scored 115 unbeaten runs and ensured that CSK posted a total north of 200. Accompanied by a half-century from Ayush Mhatre, the Super Kings were able to post 213 runs on the board at the end of their 20 overs for the loss of two wickets.

In reply, Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul gave the Capitals a dynamic start. The CSK bowlers were left searching for answers as the two batters played aggressive cricket. It looked like the opening duo would take the game away from the Super Kings.
