Baldur’s Gate III Is Coming to Xbox This Year After All, but No Split-Screen Co-Op on Xbox Series S

Baldur’s Gate III Is Coming to Xbox This Year After All, but No Split-Screen Co-Op on Xbox Series S

Baldur’s Gate III will be coming to Xbox consoles this year after all. In a tweet, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed that he and Xbox head Phil Spencer had found a solution to bring the critically acclaimed CRPG to Microsoft’s current-gen consoles. There’s one catch though: the game won’t support split-screen co-op on the less-expensive Xbox Series S — a feature the developer has been struggling to enable for months now, thanks to the technical limitations of the console. In fact, to maintain parity of features between Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Xbox Series S and X, Microsoft even sent engineers from their side to help out Larian.

“Super happy to confirm that after meeting [Spencer] yesterday, we’ve found a solution that allows us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox players this year still, something we’ve been working towards for quite some time,” Vincke’s tweet reads. The aforementioned change does not affect the regular online co-op, in which you can invite friends to help out with your campaign. However, rolling multiple characters on the same system (lower-end) is what’s causing the issue for Larian — especially, when all party members run off in four directions, start hurling spells, and stress the console. That’s a lot of on-screen activity on a single screen and in Vincke’s words from a recent interview, “That requires memory.”

That lack of memory has to do with Microsoft making the Xbox Series S more affordable, which naturally comes with the caveat of reduced performance. Larian confirmed, earlier this month, that the lack of an Xbox release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 wasn’t due to some exclusivity deal with PlayStation, but rather because they were struggling to maintain parity between both consoles on the Green Team. Microsoft’s policy enforces gameplay feature parity between Xbox Series S and X, so players with the lower-end console aren’t left out. As for whether Microsoft is making an exception for Baldur’s Gate 3 or lifting the rule entirely for upcoming games in the generation, remains to be seen.

Speaking to IGN, Spencer claimed that he didn’t see a world where his team was going to drop the Xbox Series S any time soon, but added that Microsoft would learn from the situation. “I don’t think you’ve heard from us or Larian, that this was about parity. I think that’s more that the community is talking about it,” he said, adding that parity between systems was more of a developer decision. “It’s a game I want to see on the platform, and we have resources that helped in terms of making sure it’s going to… I think they’ve said it’s going to ship by the end of the year.” In the tweet, Vincke also confirmed that the Xbox version will have cross-progression between Steam and Xbox Series S/X, so you can jump between platforms and continue from where you left off.

Larian Studios also dropped their promised first patch for Baldur’s Gate 3, which addresses over 1,000 bugs and balancing issues, in addition to fixing the kissing contact for shorter races. Earlier, the animation made it look like your short character, who couldn’t reach their romantic interest, was simply leaning in and kissing their chest. Now, if you’re not tall enough, your partner will kneel down to make contact. You can check out the entire list of changes on the official website. Meanwhile, the studio will continue working on a second patch, which will include ‘significant performance improvements’ (for Act 3 content, I’m assuming).

Baldur’s Gate 3 is out now on PC. The PS5 version releases on September 6, while the Xbox Series S/X version is slated for release sometime this year.

Attending the screening of Kalki at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Priyanka Dutt and Swapna Dutt spoke about developing Kalki 2.

“Kalki 2 is underway. Pre-production is happening. We shot 30-35 percent of the part two alongside part one itself,” Swapna told reporters at the red carpet here.

There have been reports that rest of the sequel will begin filming next year around February-March. When mentioned this to the sister duo, Swapna said, “We still haven`t locked the dates but we will soon announce.”

X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Keyboard Review: For a Select Few

X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Keyboard Review: For a Select Few

Office ergonomics became a really important factor when everyone started work from home during the pandemic. Even the most careless people I knew invested in laptop risers or stands and wireless mice (along with basic keyboards) to reduce neck strain. And since many of us are still working remotely or from home, we often seek the best possible hardware to make our work lives a lot easier. And this is not just limited to your desk and chair, but extends to what’s on your desk as well. There are several types of ergonomic mice available, and even several regular ergonomic keyboards. Most of these go with a bulge or a wave in the centre with the typical scissor switches and the usual key layout, which does not require one to relearn finger positioning making them quite easy to use and adapt.

Keychron Q10 Max Alice layout ndtv KeychronQ10Max Keychron

The Keychron Q10 Max has an Alice layout for improved ergonomics over a traditional keyboard

And then there’s the world of highly customisable (not to mention expensive) ergonomic mechanical keyboards.

First, there’s the traditional split keyboards with an Alice key layout (Keychron Q8 etc.) which shuffles the keys a bit (has two space bars and B keys on both sides), but packages it into a single-piece keyboard design. This keyboard category also has another sub-category with two physically separated halves (Keychron Q11), letting users spread out the two halves for better ergonomics.

Secondly there’s the whole world of custom-made ortholinear keyboards which are traditional looking keyboards but often have a smaller footprint given their non-staggered key layout aimed at faster typing and less hand movement.

Then, there’s the extreme world of ergonomic and tented split keyboards (Naya Create, ZSA Moonlander etc.), with ortholinear key layouts that aim to deliver the best possible ergonomics, by not just keeping your hands positioned right (or far apart) but also aim to reduce finger movements to a minimal, ensuring an almost injury-free typing experience.

NayaCreate keybaord ndtv NayaCreate Naya

The Naya Create offers a split ortholinear key layout with hot-swappable modules

X-Plus, a Hong Kong-based company has come up with the VickyBoard, which merges the Alice key layout from the first category with an ortholinear typing experience of the second category but lays it all out in a unique cross-radial design which is similar but not the same as tented split ergonomic keyboards when they are spread apart. The company claims to get you the best of both worlds with some extra keys thrown in at right places and claims to do minimal damage to your wrists and fingers while typing.

Apart from the way it looks? Is it worth spending all that money on this keyboard? After more than a month of usage, I finally have an answer.

X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Review: Price and box contents

X-Plus’ VickyBoard Ergo Split-V is currently available for purchase on Indiegogo and these are available in four basic case finishes (or series). You have to pick one of the four (Ruby, Sapphire, Onyx and Neon) case colours and go with the keycap options offered with each case there on. According to X-Plus, users are free to select a mechanical switch type of their choice (a selection of Gateron mechanical switches) when choosing a keyboard.

The basic kit which includes the basic key tool, charging and connectivity cable (along with a keyboard of your choice) has an early bird pricing of Rs. 14,903 (excludes shipping and custom duties) and retail price of Rs. 20,688.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V back case ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

The VickyBoard Ergo Split-V has a transparent bottom case which like the top case is made from CNC-machined acrylic

The VickyBoard All-Star kit includes a special X-Plus Key a special Switch puller tool, an X-Plus Mat and X-Plus Eva case has an early bird price of Rs. 17,304 (excludes shipping and custom duties) and a retail price of Rs. 27,309. Since all of these accessories are priced at a premium, it’s advisable to go for the latter as it offers better value.

X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Review: Design

The X-Plus VickyBoard has a top and bottom case made entirely out of CNC-machined acrylic. My Ruby unit with its clear sapphire keycaps looks like nothing else you have probably seen online when browsing for pre-built mechanical keyboards. While the colourways are a bit bright (and highly subjective), I’m a fan of the keyboard’s overall design, solely because of how striking and angular it looks. It’s also quite the conversation starter, meaning whoever you show it too will go “Wow! I want this!” until they take a closer look, examine the oddly placed keys and give it a quick pass.

One of the advantages of a transparent acrylic case (versus an aluminium one) is that it exposes the internals of the keyboard. This basically gives enthusiasts a window into the back of the PCB along with the chips and the wiring. And it sure looks good and interesting when done right. Which is the case with the VickyBoard. Another advantage provided by a transparent acrylic case is the underglow the RGB key lighting provides on your desk mat.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V RGB dark ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

It’s very hard to beat the VickyBoard Ergo Split-V’s RGB lighting and ground effects

One detail that stands out apart from the transparent design of the keyboard and the keycaps is the X-Plus logo. It’s way too large, garish and ruins the look of the keyboard in my opinion. And to make things worse, there’s two of them one at the top centre of the top case and another to the left of the directional keys.

The finish of the CNC-machining process of the acrylic case is fantastic, but it’s worrisome that the screws which hold the two halves of the case together have no metal sleeve but drive directly into the acrylic case, which is putting a lot of faith into something this delicate.

As soon as I pulled it out of its package, I quickly noticed some deep scratches on my review unit, right out of the package. During the review period, subject to regular typing use, I did not manage to get any new scratches on it, but it is very easy to get a deep scratch on this one if it makes contact with a metallic object on your desk.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V logo ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

The X-Plus logo is an eye-sore on this gorgeous acrylic case

Now acrylic is about 10 times stronger than glass while giving a similar look and feel to a fabricated product, but it is not resistant to breaking, in fact polycarbonate as a fabrication material is a lot stronger than acrylic and glass. The upside of using acrylic is that it does not yellow like polycarbonate and is also resistant to flexing to a certain limit, which makes it quite sturdy in the case of this keyboard.

My shipping experience with the VickyBoard Ergo Split-V was not done right and so my keyboard arrived wrapped in a bunch of foam sheets and bubble wrap, minus the usual branded cardboard packaging. The prototype keyboard I received was clearly thrown around during the shipping process and so has several deep cracks on its acrylic case. While this makes it evidently clear how delicate acrylic can be, I’m hoping that the shipping experience with the properly packaged retail units (that were shipped out in February, 2024) are a lot better and safer.

The VickyBoard Ergo Split-V offers a 75 percent layout with 72 keys. But thanks to its additional keys that are all well-spaced out for better ergonomics, it will feel a lot larger compared to a regular 75 percent layouts.

My review unit included a Ruby colourway with clear sapphire keys and Gateron yellow mechanical switches. The Eva case was shipped separately and it included a basic connectivity and charging cable along with a basic keycap puller tool.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V side case ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

The X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V keyboard uses transparent Cherry profile keycaps made of acrylic

The entire key layout is angled at 6-degrees and sadly this cannot be adjusted mainly because it was intended to provide the best comfort by the manufacturer. This typing angle cannot be adjusted at all as the case does not have any adjustable fold out feet to make any fine adjustments like you would find on regular pre-built mechanical keyboards.

The Cherry profile keycaps that came with my review unit are of the transparent type and made from acrylic. They have a nice matte translucent finish on the top surface with transparent sidewalls. I’m not a big fan of these because it’s hard to read the characters on the keys (with the backlights on or off) and they don’t sound as good as the usual PBT keycaps.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V switches ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

The PCB supports hot-swappable switches

The PCB inside the case also supports hot-swappable switches, meaning you can swap the switches with a variety of available options. However, I must add that I found the cutouts in the acrylic case for the switches to be very tight, making swapping very difficult with the provided switch and keycap puller.

X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Review: Performance

The cross-radial design of the keys means that both halves of the layout have been angled inwards and then fanned out. The keys also have an ortholinear layout, meaning that your fingers mostly end up moving up and down and not across, making typing more comfortable. This combination along with a 6-degree incline of the 72 keys made it rather comfortable to type on, but you will have to invest in a set of ergonomic gliding wrist rests (also used for mice) or get an Alice layout or split wrist rest (two piece) to make the typing experience more comfortable as there is a proper one-inch clearance from the bottom till the keycaps given that this keyboard does not use low-profile switches.

For daily work use, I have a regular 65 percent keyboard with regular QWERTY layout. So I attempted to try and rewire my muscle memory to adapt to this keyboard’s unorthodox layout. I must confess that I did not succeed, as this key design and layout has a steep learning curve and needs you to rewire your muscle memory, given that most of us are used to regular keyboard layouts.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V key layout ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

Even ortholinear keyboard users will find the fanned out cross-radial design unique

However, I did attempt several tests with this one and while I was obviously low on speed, I did realise that it was immensely comfortable given that my hands were firmly planted in place while typing. The reason for this are the additional keys placed bang in the centre of the split layout. This includes a delete, enter, control and shift keys which we often reach out for on either side of the regular key layout while touch typing. The positioning of the two space bars and the centred delete key is also something I got used to and found to be very convenient. All-in-all this keyboard does what it claims to do which is to effectively reduce typing strain on your wrists (with a wrist rest), it’s just that you have to adapt your typing style drastically to a new layout, which will take plenty of time, unless you are an enthusiast who is already accustomed to using ortholinear keyboards.

The keyboard by design supports hot-swappable switches. As for the switches, these are your typical Gateron G Pro yellow mechanical switches, which by trait are linear but require a bit of force (50g) even though they have decent pre-travel (2.0mm). These sound fairly standard (quiet) but offer a comfortable typing experience. While most of the switches worked just fine, I had two damaged switches out of the package which had bent pins.

It’s hard to read the characters on the transparent keycaps

I had my doubts about how well the keyboard would sound given the acrylic case (which is not good for acoustics) and the acrylic keycaps. To be very honest, it sounded very hollow and not satisfying at all, compared to a fully metal pre-built keyboard at this price point, which sounds a lot better in comparison.

While the acrylic case and acrylic keycaps have some impact on the sound, regular PBT caps (available on the enter and space keys and other case variants) would have improved this to an extent. The case thanks to its acrylic design isn’t plate mounted, but has the PCB directly mounted on to the CNC-machined case, which made for a rather stiff typing experience given that the whole mount is rigid and has zero flex. Add to this the transparent design and it is hard to even add any sound dampening mods to this case to kill any unwanted sounds or vibrations.

Given that this isn’t a keyboard built for the masses I still missed a simple mac/windows switch, which would conveniently let me switch between a Mac or a Windows layout. The function key row is also missing, so these will need to be reconfigured via software.

The keyboard does not use your typical VIA software for key-remapping but goes with a custom QMK solution for key-remapping and macros. It’s not as convenient as VIA where remapping happens on the fly when making changes on a web-browser. Out here, you have to make changes on a web-browser, download a configuration profile and manually load (read: flash) profiles every time you want to remap a set of keys, which can get annoying if you have a complex setup.

XPlus Vickyboard Ergo Split V extra keys ndtv XPlusVickyBoardErgoSplitV XPlus

The placement of the additional keys just like the cross-radial design takes some getting used to

While remapping and loading keyboard profiles was not the problem, I was in for a surprise as the cable I received for review was not supported by the keyboard. Thankfully, I did have a spare one lying around and it helped me manually get into DFU mode. And I had to get into DFU, because I wanted to reconfigure some of the keys which are by default setup for Windows.

Apart from its striking design, another feature that really stands out is wireless connectivity. While you can connect the keyboard via a cable for low latency, you can also connect it wirelessly (increased latency) via Bluetooth. Wireless connectivity should also work better here given that the case isn’t made out of metal which is a problem with most premium wireless keyboards. Additionally, the X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V can connect and switch between 5 devices (including Android and iOS), which is better than the usual 3.

Battery life is pretty good overall. The 3,000mAh battery lasts about a week of use with LED lights but can last several weeks with the lights off. Charging speed is not something I tested out, since this is not a keyboard one would travel given its weight (1.4kgs) and how delicate it is.

X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Review: Verdict

The X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V is a keyboard I want to use on a daily basis, because of how good it looks in all its glass-like acrylic glory. But for me it’s not worth retraining my muscle memory to adapt to an ortholinear cross-radial layout because I am more comfortable with a regular keyboard layout. And this also means that it’s all down to personal preferences and your willingness to adapt to something new.

With that said this is definitely not a keyboard for everyone and definitely not for the casual user looking for a properly ergonomic mechanical typing experience. It has a really steep learning curve and is meant to be a showpiece that will sit on the shelves of enthusiasts or those who are already used to the ortholinear key layouts (and probably already own a few similar keyboards). Even seasoned split keyboard or Alice layout users should find themselves scratching their heads over this one, because of the cross-radial design and that’s a lot to ask even for a keyboard that looks this good. This one caters to a niche audience and these are exactly the customers who will find this keyboard enticing.

Google Launches Gemini for iOS App With Gemini Live Capability, More

Google has rolled out the Gemini app for iOS users globally, days after being reportedly spotted in a test run in select regions. It enables users to generate images using its multi-modal capabilities, find information across apps like Gmail and YouTube, or enable problem-solving via image queries. The iOS app also carries Gemini Live — Google’s two-way voice chat feature for its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that lets both the user and the AI converse via speech.

Gemini Live on iOS

Google detailed the introduction of the dedicated Gemini for iOS app in a blog post. The Mountain View-based technology giant says it has been rolled out to provide a more streamlined experience to iPhone users. The app is available free of cost on the App Store and is claimed to enable easy access to features that “help improve learning, creativity and productivity.” It is powered by the Gemini family of large language models (LLMs), including Gemini 1.5.

Gadgets 360 staff members were able to verify its availability on the App Store.

One of its most notable features is Gemini Live. Introduced at the Google I/O event in August, it lets users converse with the AI chatbot via speech. They can choose between 10 different voices to personalise it, with each offering slightly different tonality, pitch, and accent. Gemini Live on the iOS app appears as a waveform icon with the sparkle icon at the bottom-right corner, next to the microphone and camera icons. The company says this feature is meant for chatting, finding answers, or brainstorming ideas. It is currently available in over 10 languages and support for more will be introduced over the coming months.

Gemini for iOS can also generate images, leveraging Google’s Imagen 3 generative AI model. Further, it can help in solving problems by providing custom, step-by-step guidance, and presenting tailored study plans. Users can get more information from new sources such as Maps and YouTube, or ask the AI chatbot to summarise their PDFs using Extensions on Gemini for iOS. It currently offers extensions such as Google Flights, Hotels, Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music.

While Gemini is free of cost on iOS, it also offers Gemini Advanced with a Google One Premium plan which is priced at Rs. 1,950 per month. This brings advanced capabilities with the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, priority access to new features, a one million context window, and Gemini in Docs, Gmail, and other Google apps.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Review: A Critically Successful Dice Roll Into the Colossal Forgotten Realms

The beauty of Dungeons & Dragons lies in its immersive role-playing structure that bestows upon you the role of an author, but you never truly know where the story is headed. It’s quite humane in that sense, where no matter how well-prepared you are, fate’s inevitable gnarly fingers might have different ideas for us. Larian Studios’ latest Baldur’s Gate III explores the Forgotten Realms, a dark fantastical corner of D&D that’s brimming with devils, deities, and the supernatural. A highly dynamic world that reacts to the digits on a polyhedral dice to weave an emotional tale about a group of broken people, gambling their lives against sinister forces that ooze Lovecraftian vibes. On the other hand, you can take a backseat and watch it all fade to misery, as you scroll through Astarion fan art and look up the quickest ways to romance bears in-game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 review: Limitless freedom

That’s the kind of impeccable choice-based writing that powered Baldur’s Gate 3 to its instant success, at one point glueing 875,343 Steam players to their seats. The amount of passion and care dedicated to minor details is astonishing, and personally, I feel like calling it anything less than a cultural phenomenon would be an insult. It’s not very often that a modern-day RPG anticipates failures or out-of-the-box actions from a player and delivers equally absurd outcomes that let you continue the journey regardless. It fully embodies the meaning of player choice, with events unfurling at a pace you desire and rarely setting any limitations for what can be done. Sure, that level of escapism can be credited to age-old tabletop RPG mechanics, but when a game’s programming ignores player agency to keep vital characters alive or restarts a level for narrative purposes, it loses its magic.

PlayStation Portal, Sony’s Handheld Device for PS5 Game Streaming, to Launch Later This Year

Early on in Baldur’s Gate 3, I thought it’d be funny to let an overconfident bard perform eye surgery on me, hoping to extract the parasitic tadpole swimming within my ocular region (more on that later). It was clear he didn’t know what he was up to when he whipped out a long, unsterilised needle and began uncertainly prodding my orbital socket, as I shrieked and clenched my fists in pain. The narration was top-notch here, describing the needle’s back-and-forth motion, as it plucked my nerves like a harp string, to no avail.

As he then brandished an icepick for better coverage, I wondered what’s the worst that could happen. If he ends up stabbing my brain, I die and reload an older save — I was mentally prepared for it and let it happen. However, the game subverted expectations by keeping my now one-eyed character alive and granted me a replacement prosthetic eye that helps with seeing invisible creatures!

It was a reward for exploring the unknown, the path less travelled, since stopping the surgery midway would’ve simply left me with a bleeding eye. But because I chose the more outlandish option, I received a bonus perk for free. Having confirmed both results by reloading save files, I can’t help but applaud Larian for thinking so far ahead and trusting the player to experiment with all possibilities. Baldur’s Gate 3 has a strong understanding of gamer psychology — the curiosity of wanting to stand before a mirror to look at your reflection, jumping into a water body to see if you die, or pressing the big red button despite warnings. Its choices hinge on this ‘what if…’ concept to yield worldly repercussions, but you don’t necessarily have to follow those rules.

Even the conditions for certain death present themselves in such delectable fashion, that I often found myself saving the game mid-conversation to see how the cutscenes would play out. When one of my party members, the rogue Astarion, outed himself as a vampire spawn and expressed his desire of taking a nibble out of my neck, I let him suck out all my blood dry, just to see what happens. Instead of restarting from a checkpoint, the next morning, my carcass just lay there on the ground, while my companions went about their daily tasks.

It was shocking to see the game just continue without me, as Astarion cluelessly remarked that something horrible had happened. (Gee, I wonder what it was!) Other times, I’d fail a Perception skill check while exploring dimly lit areas, only to trigger a booby trap and watch my entire squad burn to a crisp. It’s funnily unpredictable, and stays true to the chaotic principle of D&D that continues egging on unlucky players who roll single digits on the dice.

Baldur’s Gate 3 review: Companions

The absurdity wouldn’t be enjoyable, were it not for our delightful cast of companions, who grow and expose their flaws over the course of the campaign. That’s assuming you didn’t kill them upon the first meeting, which is hard to do considering how closed off and untrustworthy they all come across as. We’re all nothing but victims of tragedy, having found common ground in our worsening condition, thanks to a group of Mind Flayers infecting our brains with a parasite. If we don’t find a cure soon enough, our flesh and bones will morph from within, turning us into a monstrous Illithid with four tentacles hanging from our chins. And you don’t want that, right? In Baldur’s Gate III, there are no rules, so it’s entirely for you to decide whether to resist the corruption or embrace its otherworldly powers.

You do it by consuming bottled specimens of the said parasites, which unlocks an entirely separate skill tree that grants boosts for attack and ability checks, alongside access to some special Mind Flayer powers, much later. Unless you’re going for a goody-two-shoes run, the only downside to eating them is that many of our companions start seeing us in a negative light. But thanks to the power of D&D mechanics, we can charm or persuade them to support our cause — or at the very least, understand our view. Conscious beings change their minds all the time and are open to reasoning if you play your cards right. It’s a trait Baldur’s Gate 3 revels in, regardless of whether your intentions are good or bad. Now THAT is a detailed role-playing game.

Throughout our journey we recruit new members for our motley crew, starting with the ferocious Githyanki assassin Lae’zel, who’s sworn to prove herself worthy to her kind. The gloomy cleric Shadowheart is sent on a suicide mission with no memory of her past, the chatty wizard Gale is fighting an internal magical corruption, the cheerful Tiefling Karlach has a highly volatile engine for a heart, and the disapproving Wyll wants to escape a devilish bargain. All of their plight is now compounded by the lingering fear of transforming into some squid-faced horror, and you uncover their backstories by progressing sub-quests and exhausting dialogue options.

baldurs gate 3 review astarion baldurs gate 3 review astarion

The vampire spawn Astarion quickly became my favourite companion because of his melodramatic conduct

I personally took a liking to Astarion though, the silver-haired vampire spawn, who not only loves watching others suffer but is open to using the parasite’s powers to his advantage. What works incredibly well for his character is his sassy, almost melodramatic persona, fuelled by the occasional snarky comments and piercing red eyes that constantly judge you for performing heroic deeds. I also liked the tiny character-defining details Larian added to his camp, ranging from a chalice of dried blood to a nicely-maintained mirror. The latter is a rather depressing touch when you consider that the poor soul has been unable to see his own reflection for centuries now. Similarly, Lae’zel’s space has a grindstone for sharpening her weapons, Gale’s got a telescope, and Karlach has a raggedy stuffed bear to cuddle with.

By now, Baldur’s Gate 3 has also earned itself a reputation as an engaging dating simulator, spawning an array of speedrunners looking to romance a companion, as fast as possible. This has to do with the game’s approval system, where your party members’ interest in you is entirely dependent on the way you interact with the world and treat its NPCs. At the beginning of my run, I largely chose violence and was mean to everyone, even forcing one of the Tieflings in a village to kneel before Lae’zel. My lack of kindness impressed the brutal assassin, who praised my courage and confessed to wanting to have sex.

But instead of solely relying on nudity and having its characters mutely hump each other, BG3 uses sensual wordplay and stellar voice acting to amplify those moments. It’s quite effectively done, and so, I really appreciate the inclusion of a nudity filter to tone it down, in case you’re ever in a potentially awkward situation.

Baldur’s Gate 3 review: Combat and tools of trade

The combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 is turn-based — a formula that doesn’t get adapted as much in mainstream gaming these days, with the new Final Fantasy XVI completely abandoning it for a real-time affair. For many, this notion of waiting turns before attacking might be a deal-breaker, but I assure you that it’s the most dynamic combat system you’ll have ever faced. The design philosophy lends itself to DnD’s 5th Edition ruleset to encourage more tactical and out-of-the-box thinking, rather than running headfirst into enemy encounters like a headless chicken.

My experience with CRPGs is fairly limited, having only played Disco Elysium, which is a literary RPG about an amnesiac detective going through an existential crisis. There’s no actual combat in it, and so my early brawls in the Forgotten Realms were a little prickly.

Final Fantasy XVI Review

baldurs gate 3 review combat baldurs gate 3 review combat

The turn-based combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 is largely based around planning and resource management

There’s a steep learning curve to BG3’s combat system, partly attributed to the shortage of solid tutorials that just assumes everyone playing the game is well-versed with D&D mechanics. I feel like better explanations for things like resource management would’ve worked in its favour, and that adapting 5th Edition so closely made it so your characters are incredibly powerless in the early levels. That said, once you get past it and have gotten a hang of the system, every battle feels incredibly rewarding. As an experienced Dark Souls player, I’ve learned that if I get stuck somewhere, it’s because I’m not supposed to be there yet — or there’s a different method to approaching the challenge.

I encountered my first hurdle at a chapel early in the game, where I dropped down a suspicious hole that led to a dungeon. Lying in wait was a large group of bandits who kept killing my team numerous times until I was frustrated and forced to think up a new strategy. Since my placement wasn’t ideal, I decided to move the camera around, zoom in, and analyse the area, only to discover a cluster of oil barrels conveniently set in the enemies’ position. I instinctively hurled a fire spell at it, blasting half the wretched crooks into smithereens and gaining the upper hand. It was here that I learned about relying on all the tools at my disposal — not limited to weapons and spells — even if some actions might feel silly. The cool rule about DnD is that if you think something can be done, then it’s very likely possible in the universe.

New spells can be unlocked via level-ups, in addition to picking them up from the world

For instance, you can coat armaments with poison, so when you slash enemies, it deals bonus damage over time, like a ticking time bomb. If you’ve run out of attack cooldowns, you can pick up random furniture lying around and fling it, or if up close and personal, just shove them away. The latter is quite effective and comical when fighting atop elevated areas, so you can push foes over the edge to their death, without having to waste any resources. Splashing the ground with grease is a nice way to slow down enemies and make them slip and fall. Plus, they’re highly flammable, so once you’re done roasting creatures, you can douse the flames by tossing a pot of water and clear your path for safe travels. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s possible in this game.

The insane flexibility also makes it so you can avoid combat, by sneaking around or launching a weighty, surprise attack on an NPC, who isn’t in a defensive stance. In a lot of cases, fights are also tied to the larger story, kicking off mid-conversation when you say something that pisses off people. This often leads to save scumming (reloading save) for better outcomes, but there are some hard choices that are unavoidable and define your alignments for the rest of your journey. Baldur’s Gate 3 establishes this at Emerald Grove, the druid camp that’s reluctantly housing a pack of horned Tieflings, who are awaiting an assault from a cult of goblins, led by the ruthless drow Minthara.

baldurs gate 3 review minthara baldurs gate 3 review minthara

You can get on Minthara’s good side and recruit her, as long as you’re willing to make some sacrifices

For the next few hours, I had to decide whom to side with, having paid a visit to the goblin camp and heard Minthara’s side of the story. On the surface, I had the option to kill her right away, or join the goblins in the raid, which would result in countless innocents dying. But I went for the unspecified third option, wherein I betrayed the raiders midway through and defended the Grove from the invasion. Taking headcount into consideration, the goblins had a clear advantage, but guilt got the best of me and I painstakingly laid waste to them from high ground.

Sure, it was a hard-earned victory, but I was left feeling empty by the end of it because siding with Minthara would’ve led to an entirely new questline, later on. Was killing her worth it? I don’t know. There’s no way to experience everything Baldur’s Gate 3 has to offer in a single playthrough, which while mildly annoying, paves the way for quality replayability with new, branching paths.

Baldur’s Gate 3 review: Structure, and technical shortcomings

Structurally, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive playing field with loads of quests to do, though it’s not an open world. The story is spread across three acts, with each of them presenting an entirely unique location and vibe, in addition to switching up your party’s priorities. Act 1 is based in the wilderness where you learn about the Ilithid’s powers, whereas Act 2 makes things spooky by pitting you in the dim Shadowlands which establishes the game’s major threat.

Through it all, I love how you feel yourself getting progressively stronger, be it through accruing spells or level ups. I began my journey on Balanced difficulty, and a bit into the second act, felt confident and in tune with the game’s mechanics that I bumped it up to Tactician difficulty. And since the enemies don’t scale with your level, there were times I went off the beaten path and was able to totally overpower them.

baldurs gate 3 review structure baldurs gate 3 review structure

Baldur’s Gate 3 jumps between three acts, each of them offering a different vibe

Act 3 is set in the bustling metropolis of the titular Baldur’s Gate, serving as the final showdown that brings all our companions on a united mission to topple the bad guys. While its streets are densely populated, I found it lacking in valuable NPC interactions and quest-givers in this area — most characters and companions were focused on the key objective. Regardless, this section suffers from performance issues, ranging from lagging cutscenes to jittery movement when the camera pans around. There were several reports of quest-ending bugs, albeit I haven’t faced any of them yet. Hopefully, they get ironed out in the upcoming patch, because that’s the only negative I see in this masterpiece of a game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 review: Verdict

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a masterclass in table-top-inspired CRPGs, rewarding imagination above all in a gorgeous presentation that brings the Forgotten Realms to life. Larian Studios’ ambitious scope has birthed one of the most reactive worlds in all of gaming, where player choices govern both landmark events and smaller romantic flings with its delectable cast of companions. Through a nicely woven story that best represents its characters’ misery and a combat style benefitted by unorthodox tactics, it has rightfully alarmed the larger AAA games industry to do better. Sure, there are some technical shortcomings in the final act, but that doesn’t diminish its status as my Game of the Year so far. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a certified must-play title and I can’t wait to start my second playthrough — preferably as a monk Dark Urge, given how untimely and goofy his quotes are.
