MediaTek Said to Be Designing Arm-Based Chip for Microsoft’s AI Laptops


Taiwanese chip design giant MediaTek is developing an Arm-based personal computer chip that will run Microsoft’s Windows operating system, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Last month, Microsoft unveiled a new generation of laptops that feature chips designed with Arm Holdings tech, which provide enough horsepower to run the artificial intelligence applications that executives said were the future of consumer computing. The MediaTek chip is geared toward this effort.

The software company’s plans take aim at Apple which has released its own Arm-based chips for Mac computers for roughly four years. And Microsoft’s decision to optimize Windows for Arm could threaten Intel’s longstanding dominance in the PC market.

MediaTek and Microsoft declined to comment.

MediaTek’s Taiwan-listed shares closed up 2.4 percent on Wednesday, outperforming the broader index’s 1.2 percent gain.

The MediaTek PC chip is set to launch late next year after Qualcomm’s exclusive deal to supply chips for laptops expires, two of the people said. The chip is based on Arm’s ready-made designs, which can significantly speed development because less design work is needed using ready-made, tested chip components.

It was not immediately clear whether Microsoft has approved MediaTek’s PC chip for the Copilot+ Windows program.

Executives at Arm have said one of its customers used the ready-made components to build a chip in roughly nine months for a design that is already complete, which MediaTek’s is not. For experienced chip design businesses, advanced chips typically take considerably more than a year to construct and test, depending on the complexity.

In 2016, Microsoft tapped Qualcomm to spearhead moving the Windows operating system to Arm’s underlying processor architecture, which has long powered smartphones and their small batteries. Microsoft granted Qualcomm an exclusivity arrangement to develop Arm-based Windows-compatible chips until 2024, Reuters reported last year.

Because the Qualcomm exclusivity arrangement with Microsoft is expiring, other designers have opted to build chips to help power Microsoft’s latest push to use Arm designs. For decades, Windows machines have relied on chip architecture made by Advanced Micro Devices and Intel.

Nvidia and AMD are working on Arm designs for Windows machines, Reuters reported last year. The Nvidia effort for its PC chip involves help from MediaTek, according to a person familiar with the matter. The MediaTek effort for a PC chip is separate from its collaboration with Nvidia, two of the people said.

The company says this method will allow users to quickly respond to emails that usually could eat up valuable time of users.

Other options available in the quick-actions interface include options to view bills, access verification codes, track packages, view images and attachments, add events to the calendar, RSVP to invites and more. Additionally, users can also customise their notifications to choose the email categories that are important to them.

Coming to the interface, Yahoo Mail has opted for a messaging app-like experience where users can quickly enter a mail thread and reply with a few taps. It also offers an AI feature that can adjust the tonality of a message and make it appear more professional, friendly, formal, or concise. The company is also letting users organise their primary inbox. Users can sort it by important messages, organising emails by sender, content, and topics. Further, users can also unsubscribe emails from a sender and delete messages by users.

Yahoo has also included a gamification feature in the Mail app. The company has added prompts to ask users to delete, archive, or mark emails as read. Using the visual prompts can perform the action in a single tap. The company is calling it gamifying inbox clean-up.

Finally, the new Yahoo Mail app lets users to link multiple email accounts. This means users can access the app’s email management features without needing to open a new account. Popular email clients such as Gmail, Outlook, and other email providers are compatible with the app.

Microsoft has reportedly been developing an Xbox mobile storefront that would allow users to bypass Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store and download games off its own application. Earlier this year, Microsoft’s gaming chief Phil Spencer, too, had revealed ahead of the annual Game Developer Conference that the company intended to launch its own app store for both iOS and Android. Now, Xbox is reportedly in talks with partners for the same.

According to a Bloomberg report, Spencer claimed that the Xbox store app on mobile platforms could come out sooner rather than later. “It’s an important part of our strategy and something we are actively working on today not only alone, but talking to other partners who’d also like to see more choice for how they can monetize on the phone,” the report quoted Spencer as saying in an interview at the CCXP comics and entertainment convention in Sao Paolo.

The Xbox chief did not provide a specific launch date for the launch of the storefront but hinted at release window in the not-too-distant future. “I don’t think this is multiple years away, I think this is sooner than that,” he said.

A report in March had claimed that the Xbox mobile store was expected to go live by March 2024, once Microsoft’s $69 billion (roughly Rs. 5,68,094 crore) acquisition of Activision Blizzard was finalised. That happened in October as Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which had earlier blocked the deal, stepped aside and gave approval for the acquisition to go through. The CMA, which held concerns over Microsoft’s cloud streaming dominance in the market, greenlit the deal when Microsoft announced that Call of Duty maker Activision would sell its non-European streaming rights to Ubisoft Entertainment to pacify British regulators.

Now that the deal is closed, it seems the plan to launch the Xbox store app on iOS and Android can go through. Apple and Google maintain strict storefront rules and do not allow app developers to host their applications on a third-party storefront, charging them a cut on every transaction made via the App Store and the Play Store, respectively. The companies’ stringent store policy has, however, come under regulatory scanner. Developers like Epic Games have initiated antitrust proceedings against the two tech giants and the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which intends to prevent tech giants from abusing their market position, is set to allow other app and game developers to introduce their own app stores on mobile platforms. Tech companies have until March 2024 to comply with all the rules laid out in the DMA.

Last month, Microsoft announced that it was partnering Inworld AI to create game development tools for the Xbox platform, enabling developers to create characters, generate entire scripts and quests, and more. Earlier this year, Xbox also hiked the prices of its popular subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, and its flagship current-gen console, the Xbox Series X.

New Delhi: Shares of six Adani group firms bounced back on Friday from the previous day’s sharp drubbing, in tandem with a bull rally in the equity market wherein the BSE benchmark Sensex zoomed 1,961 points.

The stock of Ambuja Cements jumped 3.50 per cent, ACC climbed 3.17 per cent, the group’s flagship firm Adani Enterprises advanced 2.16 per cent, Adani Ports rose 2.05 per cent, Adani Total Gas shot up by 1.18 per cent, and NDTV edged up 0.65 per cent on the BSE.

In contrast, shares of Adani Green Energy tanked 8.20 per cent, Adani Energy Solutions slumped 6.92 per cent, Adani Power declined 3.23 per cent, and Adani Wilmar slipped 0.73 per cent.

Most of the group stock fell during the morning trade after billionaire Gautam Adani was charged by US prosecutors for allegedly being part of a scheme to pay USD 265 million (about Rs 2,200 crore) bribe to Indian officials in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts.

In the equity market, the benchmark indices staged a sharp recovery. The BSE benchmark Sensex jumped 1,961.32 points or 2.54 per cent to settle at 79,117.11, and the NSE Nifty surged 557.35 points or 2.39 per cent to 23,907.25.

Shares of Adani group firms fell sharply on Thursday.

The stock of Adani Enterprises had plunged 22.61 per cent, Adani Energy Solutions tanked 20 per cent, Adani Green Energy plummeted 18.80 per cent, Adani Ports dived 13.53 per cent, Ambuja Cements cracked 11.98 per cent, and Adani Total Gas tumbled 10.40 per cent on the BSE.

Shares of Adani Wilmar declined 9.98 per cent, Adani Power slumped 9.15 per cent, ACC fell 7.29 per cent, and NDTV dipped 0.06 per cent.

Adani group on Thursday denied charges of paying bribes to secure favourable terms for solar power contracts, saying the allegations by US prosecutors are baseless and the conglomerate is compliant with all laws.

It said all possible legal recourse will be sought.

“The allegations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission against directors of Adani Green are baseless and denied,” the group spokesperson said in a statement.

According to a Weibo post by tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese), the awaited lineup will include the vanilla Huawei Mate 70, Huawei Mate 70 Pro, Huawei Mate 70 Pro+, and Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design.

The tipster claims that the Huawei Mate 70 series smartphones will have thinner, narrower, and more rounded designs than the existing Mate 60 series. They are said to feature large, centred rear camera modules. The tipster added that the series will likely be unveiled in China in mid-November.

Huawei Mate 70 Series Features (Expected)

The Huawei Mate 70 series phones are expected to offer better battery life compared to current Mate 60 models, which are equipped with up to 5,000mAh batteries. Tipster Fixed Focus Digital (translated from Chinese) claimed in a Weibo post that the Mate 70 handsets carry batteries smaller than 6,000mAh. They are speculated to get 5,500 or 5,700mAh cells.

Another tipster Smart Pikachu suggested in a Weibo post that the Huawei Mate 70 lineup will be equipped with Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for security. 

Meanwhile, a Huawei Central report shared leaked images of the Huawei Mate 70 series camera protectors. These showed the camera layout design of the rumoured smartphones. The base and Pro variants, with large, circular units, appear to be similar to the Huawei Mate 50 series handsets. The leaked Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design may have the same octagonal rear camera module as the Mate 60 RS Ultimate Design.

Previous leaks has suggested that the Huawei Mate 70 series may ship with Kirin SoCs, Hongmeng kernel-based Harmony OS, 1.5K displays, and satellite communication support.

AI-Powered Recall gets delayed

Adding an update to last week’s blog post about the improvements added to Recall, Microsoft said that instead of shipping the feature directly to all users with a Copilot+ PC, it will now first be previewed in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks. After the public beta testing and incorporating the feedback, the feature will be released to all Copilot+ PCs in preview mode.

“We are adjusting the release model for Recall to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security. This decision is rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers and to seek additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users,” Microsoft added.

Notably, the Windows maker addressed the criticism of the feature and made several changes to how the feature works. The AI-powered Recall was made entirely opt-in, with a screen explicitly requiring the user’s consent before it gets activated. The feature was also integrated with the Windows Hello security feature, which requires either biometric authentication or a separate PIN code. Additionally, the tech giant said the device will require a “proof of presence” to view the timeline and search in Recall.

Further, a second layer of encryption to the feature’s search index database is also being added to protect it from bad actors. However, it now appears that Microsoft wants to take more time to test the feature within the WIP community, before releasing it globally. According to a report by The Verge, the Recall feature was developed in secrecy and it was not tested publicly before the announcement was made at the Surface event. The company is likely rectifying its mistakes with this move.

Given how the trailers and awards are spaced out, host Keighley once again expects The Game Awards to run for around three hours, albeit this year, Valve isn’t giving out free Steam Decks every minute to online viewers. Instead, the company is doing a sweepstake to hand out 100 Steam Deck OLEDs (1TB models) to the lucky few — residing in North America, Europe, and select Asian regions — who can all enter once the show goes live. There aren’t any big changes to the nominations this year, but Keighley has confirmed that the creators are moving away from using the ‘World Premiere’ card at the start of their announcements to treat every trailer or first look as ‘great game content.’

The Game Awards 2023: Date and time

The Game Awards 2023 kicks off on Thursday, December 7 at 4:30pm PT/ 7:30pm ET, just like last time. For India, this translates to early morning Friday, December 8 at 6am IST with plans to end at 9:30am — not the most comfortable time to catch up on the biggest gaming event of the year. The first thirty minutes of that runtime will be dedicated to a pre-show, hosted by Sydnee Goodman, serving as a way for smaller developers to showcase their games and content creators to talk about what they’re expecting from the show.

So if you’re only planning to watch the main show, tune in at 5pm PT/ 8pm ET in the US and 6:30am in India.

The Game Awards 2023: How to watch?

The ceremony will be held live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles with an in-person audience, but as always, there’s a simultaneous livestream planned. The Game Awards’ official Twitter account briefly teased a Hideo Kojima announcement using a side-eyes emoji, before getting deleted. This could very well be a trailer for Death Stranding 2, which was revealed at last year’s event via a cryptic teaser with returning leads Léa Seydoux and Norman Reedus. So yeah, its game director Hideo Kojima is also expected to make an appearance, having arrived in Los Angeles earlier this week. The Game Awards 2023 presenters

To honour the winners, Keighley loves mixing things up by inviting both game industry titans and Hollywood actors. Alan Wake 2 fans are in for a treat as the Poets of the Fall band will be performing a musical piece live on stage, under its in-game alter ego Old Gods of Asgard. And as we all know, Keighley’s love for Muppets knows no bounds, so The Great Gonzo will also be around as a presenter.

The Game Awards 2023 nominees

As mentioned before, The Game Awards 2023 plays host to 31 categories, from which Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 are tied for eight nominations each, in addition to competing for the prestigious Game of the Year trophy. Other GOTY nominees include The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4 remake, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Keighley is strictly sticking to his six nominations rule, despite an extremely strong year for gaming. There are some strong contenders for Best Adaptation as well, with favourites being HBO’s The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The nominee list also sparked some debate on what constitutes an ‘independent game’ when people online noticed that Dave the Diver, the pixelated roguelike about deepsea fishing and selling sushi, was nominated as ‘Best Independent Game.’ The thing is, despite its aesthetic, the game is developed by Mintrocket, which belongs to a massive South Korean publisher Nexon — making it technically not indie. Keighley addressed these concerns in a live Q&A stating that the word ‘indie’ could mean different to different people — “Does independent mean the budget of the game? Does independent mean where the source of financing was? Is it based on the team size? Is it the kind of independent spirit of a game, meaning kind of a smaller game that’s different?”, he said (via Kotaku), adding that the concern is justified.
