Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Tipped to Launch in 2025 As an Affordable Foldable Smartphone
Samsung could launch a more affordable variant of its flagship Galaxy Z Flip series smartphone dubbed the Galaxy Z Flip FE next year, according to claims on social media by a tipster. The South Korean technology giant unveiled a Special Edition model of its top-of-the-line Galaxy Z Fold 6 in select markets a few weeks ago, but that was priced considerably higher than the standard variant. Meanwhile, the purported Galaxy Z Flip FE is speculated to come with toned-down internals in a bid to reduce costs.

In a post on the South Korean blogging platform Naver (via Android Authority), tipster @yeux1122 suggested that Samsung might be developing a more affordable variant of the Galaxy Z Flip series. The purported device is expected to hit the market in 2025.
While its launch date remains unknown, the tipster claimed that it would be a “simultaneous release”, suggesting that it could make its debut alongside the next-generation Samsung foldables — the purported Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 — in the latter half of the year.
This development builds upon the recent announcement during Samsung’s Earnings Call for Q3 2024 where they said they were exploring “ways to lower entry barriers so that more customers can actually experience foldable products.” This hints at the potential development of more affordable versions of the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold series smartphones being in development.
Furthermore, the tipster also suggested that Samsung might launch two more devices next year: Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim and an additional model in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 series. While the former has a tentative launch timeline of “before and after” April 2025, the latter is speculated to be a simultaneous release, meaning it could be yet another smartphone making its debut alongside Samsung’s seventh-generation foldables. Backing the laptop is a 3-cell, 59 Wh Li-ion polymer battery with support for 65W fast charging via USB Type-C. Other features include a 5-megapixel IR camera, Bluetooth 5.2 support, and dual stereo speakers with audio by Poly Studio.
HP says its OmniBook X AI PC is built for retail consumers including creators and freelancers. The laptop is powered by the Snapdragon X Elite chipset and Qualcomm Hexagon NPU with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD storage. It features a 14-inch 2.2K IPS display with 300 nits peak brightness and micro-edge bezels. A Nearby Supernova May End Dark Matter Search, Claims New Study
The pursuit of understanding dark matter, which comprises 85 percent of the universe’s mass, could take a significant leap forward with a nearby supernova. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, led by Associate Professor of Physics Benjamin Safdi, have theorised that the elusive particle known as the axion might be detected within moments of gamma rays being emitted from such an event. Axions, predicted to emerge during the collapse of a massive star’s core into a neutron star, could transform into gamma rays in the presence of intense magnetic fields, offering a potential breakthrough in physics.
Potential Role of Gamma-Ray Telescopes
The study was published in Physical Review Letters and revealed that the gamma rays produced from axions could confirm the particle’s mass and properties if detected. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, currently the only gamma-ray observatory in orbit, would need to be pointed directly at the supernova, with the likelihood of this alignment estimated at only 10 percent. A detection would revolutionise dark matter research, while the absence of gamma rays would constrain the range of axion masses, rendering many existing dark matter experiments redundant.
Challenges in Catching the Event
For detection, the supernova must occur within the Milky Way or its satellite galaxies—an event averaging once every few decades. The last such occurrence, supernova 1987A, lacked sensitive enough gamma-ray equipment. Safdi emphasised the need for preparedness, proposing a constellation of satellites, named GALAXIS, to ensure 24/7 sky coverage.
Axion’s Theoretical Importance
The axion, supported by theories like quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and string theory, bridges gaps in physics, potentially linking gravity with quantum mechanics. Unlike neutrinos, axions could convert into photons in strong magnetic fields, providing unique signals. Laboratory experiments like ABRACADABRA and ALPHA are also probing for axions, but their sensitivity is limited compared to the scenario of a nearby supernova. Safdi expressed urgency, noting that missing such an event could delay axion detection by decades, underscoring the high stakes of this astrophysical endeavour.
Microsoft Is Reportedly Exploring Free Xbox Game Pass Access in Exchange for Watching Adverts
Microsoft is reportedly planning to offer free game streaming in exchange for advertisements. As per TweakTown, Xbox Gaming CFO Tim Stuart suggested during the recent Wells Fargo TMT Summit that to expand geographically, it would be ideal to leverage the company’s xCloud service, allowing players to cloud stream games at any ‘endpoint’ via a simple Game Pass Ultimate subscription. He further added, “For models like Africa, or India, Southeast Asia, maybe places that aren’t console-first, you can say, ‘Hey, do you want to watch 30 seconds of an ad and then get two hours of game streaming?’”
If true, this would be an incredible deal for mobile gamers since they’d simply need a good internet connection to experience the entire catalogue of games Xbox Game Pass has on offer. The idea is for Microsoft to get its games subscription service to as many screens as possible; offering it for free in exchange for ad-viewing seems like a promising route. I can’t speak for other countries, but the average Indian mobile gamer does not make premium game purchases — partly due to poor regional pricing — and would much rather opt for piracy. The company has previously asked Xbox Insiders about providing more Game Pass time in exchange for adverts, code snippets of which were revealed by researcher Title_OS. There was also a reported survey asking how users would feel about a low-priced ad-supported Game Pass subscription, with limitations such as a six-month delay on new games.
“So, we can go in with our own business models and say — there’s millions of gamers we would never have been able to address, and now we can go in with our business models,” Stuart added (via VGC). During the same presentation, he also floated the idea of bringing Xbox Game Pass to rival platforms such as PlayStation and Nintendo, a claim that was soon shut down by CEO Phil Spencer.
Reports from earlier this month also suggested that Xbox was planning to launch a mobile storefront via a dedicated application that would bypass Apple App Store and Google Play Store’s security layer, so Xbox wouldn’t have to pay a cut on every purchase being made. Currently, there is no release window for the app, but the company is in talks with undisclosed partners — wouldn’t be surprised to see Candy Crush Saga developer King to be involved, following its acquisition in October.
New additions to this month’s Game Pass catalogue include Far Cry 6, both Remnant games, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and more — as part of Xbox’s holiday offering to the community. HMD Partners With Xplora to Make Phones Focused on Children and Teenagers
HMD announced a strategic partnership with Norwegian-based Xplora, which offers smartwatches for kids. The collaboration is aimed at creating a new type of phone, an alternative to a smartphone, for children and teenagers. This project is the result of a global survey conducted by the company earlier this year, where the need for an addiction-free productivity-boosting device for the youth arose among parents. The company has yet to announce the moniker of the phone, probable launch timeline or any other details.
HMD x Xplora Collaboration
HMD, the Finnish OEM, announced in a press release on October 29 that it is working with Xplora to create a new phone aimed at children and teenagers. The companies aim to make “responsible and mindful devices” for users.
Earlier this year HMD launched The Better Phone Project. A global survey of 10,000 parents accompanied the project launch. More than half of the surveyed parents regretted offering a smartphone to their children as early as they did. According to the parents, it negatively impacted family time, sleep cycle, exercise routines and socialising opportunities among the children.
HMD says that it is in the process of creating “a suite of new solutions which serve as viable alternatives to smartphones.” This includes a smartphone alternative for children and teenagers. Notably, HMD previously introduced the Detox Mode in its HMD Skyline and HMD Fusion handsets, which help users control their screen time.
The moniker, features or launch details of the HMD and Xplora collaboration phone have not yet been announced. Speculations suggest that the first handset could be showcased at the 2025 Mobile World Congress in March next year.
Meanwhile, previous leaks suggested that HMD is gearing up to launch an HMD Sage smartphone next. It recently surfaced online with a design very similar to that of the HMD Skyline or HMD Crest handsets. It is expected to run on a Unisoc T760 5G, carry 50-megapixel rear and selfie cameras as well as support 33W wired fast charging.

E3 Is Officially Dead After a Series of Failed Attempts at Reinvention
E3, what was once the biggest video game expo, is officially dead. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) confirmed the news on Twitter, thanking the fans and developers who attended and supported the in-person show for over two decades. Its closure was only a matter of time, slyly signalled in March, when the 2023 edition got cancelled due to a lack of interest from several publishers including the big three — PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo — all of which pulled out. Add to that pandemic-era disruption which caused global lockdowns, competitors such as Summer Game Fest, and the general audience preferring to catch up on game reveals from the comfort of their homes, eventually leading to its demise.
“We know the entire industry, players and creators alike have a lot of passion for E3. We share that passion,” ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis told The Washington Post in an interview. “We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but it’s the right thing to do given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners.” Several attempts were made to revive and reinvent E3, but online digital events became a go-to favourite for both fans and developers, who didn’t want to deal with the hassle of travelling long distances to attend a crowded physical show and spending large amounts to secure booths at the event. During the peak COVID-19 period, industry giant Geoff Keighley decided to quit working with E3 and took the opportunity to kickstart his own online season of games called the Summer Game Fest, allowing developers to switch on their webcams and promote games.
In fact, PlayStation even adopted that digital format for both its smaller State of Play events and its bigger showcases, as a medium to present a slew of video games at once and generate hype. Assassin’s Creed maker Ubisoft was another major publisher, who backed out of this year’s proposed E3 event and decided to host an online Ubisoft Forward show, albeit with select journalists at the venue. This year’s E3 was supposed to be held from June 13–16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, marking the first in-person extravaganza since 2019. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic, then there was an online version in 2021, and the 2022 E3 was outright cancelled in the hopes of revitalising it. And now we’re here.
Since its conception, E3 also served as a stage for some of gaming’s biggest figures like Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. As such, the latter has shared his favourite memories from the show and expressed gratitude for opening the gates for Japanese games to flourish in the global market. Meanwhile, God of War reboot game director Cory Barlog reminisced on the time when he debuted the bearded and reserved look for Kratos to thousands of screaming fans. “Both loved and hated this show. RIPs to the E3,” he tweeted. At the time of writing, there are reportedly no plans for selling the E3 brand name, either.
