Dell Is Building Future-Ready Machines That Can Deliver AI Capabilities: Pujan Chadha

Dell recently introduced its first Copilot+ PCs lineup in India, comprising the XPS 13 and the Inspiron 14 Plus. While the company was already selling artificial intelligence (AI) PCs with Intel’s Core Ultra processors, the Copilot+ PCs feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chipset. What’s the difference apart from the processor? On paper, not much. They both get the dedicated Copilot key, the new AI features rolled out by Microsoft, and processing power to handle AI tasks. There are some minor changes, but that does help us understand the full picture.

To gain a better perspective on the entire AI PC space and to simplify the technology and its implementation for the end consumer, Gadgets 360 spoke with Pujan Chadha, Director – Product Marketing, Consumer and Small Business at Dell Technologies. In our interaction, we covered topics such as the difference between Copilot+ PCs and AI PCs, the lack of on-device AI apps and experiences on desktops, the future outlook of AI PCs and the role of government regulations.

Understanding the AI PC Terminologies

So, what exactly is an AI PC? The answer may vary depending on who you ask. From Microsoft’s perspective, an AI PC should have the Windows OS and a dedicated Copilot button. The Copilot key is an important distinction because the lack of it means the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024), which features the AMD Ryzen 9 processor with an integrated neural processing unit (NPU), is not labelled an AI PC.

However, Intel has distanced itself from this definition. Todd Lewellen, Head of the PC ecosystem at Intel, said in a press briefing, “From an Intel perspective, our AI PC has Core Ultra, and it has an integrated NPU[..]We have great alignment with Microsoft, but there are going to be some systems out there that may not have the physical key on it, but it does have our integrated NPU.”

pujan chadha dell Pujan Chadha Dell

Complicating the matter still is the equation of Copilot+ PCs. All that has been said about this distinction is that these are the devices that are built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chipsets. However, Chadha shed more light on what constitutes a Copilot+ PC. He said, “The PCs that are all getting shipped in India today are all Copilot PCs. Our friends from Microsoft qualify a machine as a Copilot+ PC when the Copilot AI is integrated within them, and the machine can handle 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS) and above. That is currently only available with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets. That is how things are right now, but it is an evolving scene, and we will see how the market evolves in the months to come.”

Building Future-ready machines

Another quandary with AI PCs currently is that there is not much the end consumer can do with these capabilities unless they are well-versed in AI and want to download and run AI models locally. However, that will constitute a small percentage of the total buyers.

When we asked Chadha about this, he said, “AI is still in its initial phase, and it is evolving daily. A dedicated NPU in these machines will be ready whenever a new application comes in that takes advantage of these AI capabilities. These are future-ready machines. That’s how we look at it.”

Dell is also spending considerable time training its in-store promoters (ISPs) and store promoters so that they can, in turn, help the end consumer understand what these machines can do for them, Chadha explained.

“Dell’s global vision is to take the lead in the entire AI PC category. The way we look at this is that AI will kickstart a refresh because these are high ASPU (Average Spend Per User) machines. That’s where these machines’ use cases and effect on productivity will play a critical role. We want to expand our portfolio with AI PCs’ capabilities,” he added.

Is Regulation a Concern?

The AI space is riddled with regulatory concerns that span across issues like data privacy, plagiarism, and the risk of AI reaching superintelligence and posing a threat to humanity. With all this, regulation becomes a priority. Earlier this year, the European Union passed the AI Act, bringing it into effect. Following this, many AI firms, including tech giants such as Google, OpenAI, and Meta, urged the Commission to reconsider certain policies as there was a concern that it might stifle innovation.

In April, Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the government of India is in the process of legislating AI, and it might arrive any day now. The concern is the same. Will a stringent policy push developers and AI companies away from building tools and experiences for Indians?

Chadha believes otherwise. “We have separate departments of government teams which continue to engage the government. We abide by all the laws, and we drive things that are the best for the consumer and the country as per the local regulations.”

Finally, relevancy is also a concern. With AI models getting more sophisticated and powerful with each passing day, the resources required to run them are also going to increase significantly. Part of the reason why Copilot cannot perform all its duties offline and still requires a server connection to run certain tasks. The same is true for Google’s Gemini or OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

With AI advancing at an exponential rate, there is a fear that on-device AI processing may not last very long and that on-server AI will become the norm. We asked Chadha whether this is a concern and if, in the next five years, AI PCs with a dedicated NPU could become irrelevant.

Answering the question, he said, “It will continue to be relevant. On the consumer side, the data sits on the machine itself due to the NPU. Some of the Copilot features are also available without the Internet. I think we are in for it, and we are going all aboard to elevate the experience for the consumers.”

`Wicked: Part I` movie review- Bringing magic to the screen in resplendent style

Film: Wicked: Part I
Cast: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Kristin Chenoweth, Peter Dinklage, Marissa Bode, Idina Menzel,  Sharon D. Clarke, Adam James, Keala Settle, Bronwyn James, Bowen Yang, James Dryden, Andy Nyman, Grecia De la Paz.
Director: Jon M. Chu
Rating: 3.5/5
Runtime: 160 min

Wicked, this first instalment of a two-part cinematic adaptation by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, of Gregory Maguire’s book, was apparently framed along the lines of the hit Broadway musical of the same name.

Wicked opens with flying monkeys, a witch’s hat, and a yellow brick road followed by a song celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda/Galinda (Ariana Grande), confirms her passing.

Going back in time, we hear of the birth of Elphaba, a green baby rejected by her father, the governor of Munchkinland (Andy Nyman). Their milkman was apparently The Incredible Hulk. Elphaba is eventually sent to Shiz University by her father to support her wheelchair bound sister Nessarose (Marissa Bode) and it’s here that she meets Galinda Upland, an entitled toxic mean girl used to getting her own way. Galinda and Elphaba end up as roommates. Ephaba’s natural flair attracts headmistress Madame Morrible’s (Michelle Yeoh) attention and she takes her under her tutelage. Galinda sets her eyes on a hunk named Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) who ends up becoming fascinated by Elphaba’s abilities. In the interim, a professor at the school, a goat named Dr. Dillamond (voiced by Peter Dinklage), also forms a bond with Elphaba. After several grandiose showstopping song and dance numbers Elphaba meets the great Oz( Jeff Goldblum) who has his own reasons for harnessing her magical powers.

Over and above the plethora of song and dance numbers there’s some deeper subtext too. Elphaba deals with her Daddy issues and othering in her own inimical way. Galinda we find is also not all bad. She convinces a good-hearted Munchkin, Boq (Ethan Slater) to ask out Elphaba’s wheelchair bound sister Nessarose. She also puts in all efforts to make Elphaba popular. In a wonderfully poignant scene we see Ariana Grande-Butera lending energy and vitality while dancing and frolicking to a popular song. We see hints of racism, cruelty towards animals, systematic erasure of history, people being forced out of jobs and the dehumanisation of a community – all pointing to the topicality of this supple material.

The world-building is pretty strong, the visuals are eye-popping and the tech aspects are worthy of fullsome praise. We don’t always see Elphaba and Galinda together. Both get to showcase their singing and dancing talents individually too. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera, both put on a great show. Elphaba is the author backed character and as such Cynthia gets to hog the show but Ariana Grande is no shrinking violet. Her vocals are strong and enlivening. Erivo and Grande’s performances are micromanaged beautifully to convey a relationship that feels stronger and well-developed. Their loathing gives way to sisterhood in spectacular fashion. Their feelings for Fiyero also make room for hilarity. The movie closes with the popular song “Defying Gravity.” The costumes, set design, make-up, styling are all top-notch. The rooms and grounds of Shiz University are alive with textures and details that enhance the impressive dance acrobatics on display within.

Everything is not perfect in ‘Wicked: Part I,’though. The runtime for one can be very daunting and not all the songs have the power to keep you humming along. Even so, this is a fairly invigorating and thought-provoking musical.

Microsoft Reportedly Plans to Bring First Party Titles Starfield, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to PS5

Microsoft Reportedly Plans to Bring First Party Titles Starfield, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to PS5

Microsoft seems to be shifting its strategy in the gaming space, with reports claiming that the company is mulling the potential launch of its first party titles on rival consoles. Starfield, the space RPG from Microsoft-owned Bethesda Softworks that launched exclusively on Xbox and PC in September last year, could be coming to PS5. The Xbox parent is also considering bringing another upcoming Bethesda title to Sony’s console. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, first revealed at Xbox’s Developer Direct showcase last month, could also reportedly launch on PS5.

The report about Starfield’s potential release outside the Xbox and PC ecosystem comes from XboxEra, citing anonymous sources who claim that Bethesda’s RPG is being considered for a PS5 launch. While there’s no detail on a release timeline, the report says it could happen after the Shattered Space expansion, announced in December last year, launches on Xbox consoles and PC sometime later this year.

Additionally, sources have told XboxEra that Microsoft has made “additional investment into PlayStation 5 dev kits to support ongoing development efforts.” The report also says that the shift in Microsoft’s stance to release first party titles on competing platforms has not come without some internal resistance. The company’s senior leadership has engaged in “fierce” internal discussions over the matter, with not everyone reportedly onboard with the new direction. But the financial incentive of releasing its biggest games on rival consoles like PS5 and Nintendo Switch cannot be ignored.

Aside from Starfield, Bethesda’s next big game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, is also being considered for a PS5 launch, according to The Verge. The report, citing a source privy to Microsoft’s plans, claims that the Indiana Jones game seems set to be joining a list of Xbox titles that could make their way to PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Announced for Xbox Series S/X and PC, Indiana Jones will reportedly be a timed exclusive, with a potential PS5 launch being weighed for some months after the game arrives on Xbox and Windows. The report says that publisher Bethesda is looking at a December 2024 launch timeline for Microsoft consoles and PC.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed any details about its reported plans to release first party games on other platforms and its decision on certain exclusive titles going multi-platform could change. The new reports, however, follow rumours of other Xbox titles potentially coming to PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Exclusive titles like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves could reportedly go multi-platform, with XboxEra sources saying that the former could be available on rival consoles in the first quarter of 2024.

Xbox’s previous position on its first-party titles was clear: exclusive launch on Xbox consoles and PC, with subscription access via Game Pass. Aaron Greenberg, vice-president for Xbox games marketing at Microsoft, had stressed on X (formerly Twitter) — long before Starfield launched — that the game would not be a timed exclusive, with no indication of it ever coming to PlayStation.

Microsoft acquired Bethesda parent ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion (roughly Rs. 55,223 crore at the time of the deal) back in 2020, adding formidable franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Doom, Fallout and more to its first party portfolio. The company also reportedly scrapped a planned PS5 release for Arkane’s first-person shooter Redfall after the acquisition “We were acquired by Microsoft and it was a change with capital C. They came in and said, ‘No PlayStation 5’,” Redfall game director Harvey Smith had said in an interview in March last year. That strategy, clearly, seems to be changing.

Redfall later released to overwhelmingly negative critical reception, with Xbox chief Phil Spencer himself taking “full responsibility” for the game’s unceremonious launch. “I’m disappointed, I’m upset with myself,” Spencer had said on the Kinda Funny Xcast show in May last year. He had also candidly weighed in on Xbox’s position compared to its two big rivals in the console space, Sony and Nintendo, admitting that Xbox did not intend to “out-console” its competitors.

Microsoft did, however, acquire Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard last year for $69 billion (roughly Rs. 5,73,000 crore) after a long-running regulatory battle with the US’ Federal Trade Commission and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority. While the acquisition bolsters Microsoft’s position in the market, bringing lucrative franchises under its umbrella, the company has had to acquiesce to certain conditions to placate antitrust authorities. The Xbox parent signed an agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Microsoft and Activision also agreed to sell non-European cloud streaming rights for their titles to Ubisoft.

Starfield, despite its overall mixed reception, has remained a strong performer for Microsoft, with the game emerging as one of Steam’s best-selling titles in 2023. In December last year, Spencer said the Bethesda RPG had hit 12 million players since launch.

Pushpa 2 US distributor placates fans' concerns about few shows: ‘Wicked, Gladiator 2, Moana 2 also releasing’

Nov 22, 2024 05:32 PM IST

Pushpa 2: The Rule is releasing in India on December 5 and on December 4 in the US and fans were concerned the film has  not enough shows.

Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil, sold over 40k tickets in the US days before its release on December 4. However, fans seem worried that the film doesn’t have enough shows in the region to break records. Prathyangira Cinemas, the US distributor of the film, placated fan concerns. ‘We know where to fit in’

A fan made a flow chart comparing the number of shows allotted to Pushpa 2 in Cinemark screens versus Kalki 2898 AD and Devara: Part 1, claiming that the Arjun-starrer had shows ‘nowhere close to them’. The distributors replied to the fan on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “We understand ur concerns. Situation in the USA is bit different now with WICKED, GLADIATOR 2 and Moana 2 studios also having screens on that day. We r giving it our all. You don’t need to worry we know exactly where to fit in.”

They also reminded fans that they were the ones who distributed both Kalki 2898 AD and Devara: Part 1 in the US. “We’re already in the TOP 3 in terms of show count with 3.3K+ shows across nearly 900+ locations which is a dream release for any Indian cinema,” they wrote, adding, “Don’t worry brother things will fall into place. We still have 2 weeks time and we’re set to go even higher.” But worried fans also complained about more Hindi shows being available in the US than Telugu.

About Pushpa 2: The Rule

Pushpa 2: The Rule is the sequel to Sukumar’s hit 2021 film Pushpa: The Rise. The film has been years in the making, with Arjun maintaining his long-haired and bearded look for long. Arjun, Rashmika and Fahadh reprise their roles as Pushpa Raj, Srivalli and Bhanwar Singh Shekawat in the film. The film will be released in all south Indian languages, Bengali and Hindi.

Bhagam Bhag 2: IT’S OFFICIAL! Akshay Kumar, Govinda, And Paresh Rawal Return Madder And Crazier

New Delhi: The mad, mad world of the blockbuster comedy, Bhagam Bhag, is set to return. 18 years after it wowed audiences all over, the much-awaited sequel, Bhagam Bhag 2, is finally happening.

For all the die-hard fans of the film, which has attained cult status over the years, thanks to the Internet and social media, this news is nothing short of a celebration.

Starring Akshay Kumar, Govinda and Paresh Rawal in lead roles, Bhagam Bhag is considered as one of ace director Priyadarshan’s iconic films. Even in Akshay’s vast repertoire, Bhagam Bhag holds a very special position along with landmark films like Hera Pheri and Welcome.

The rights for the sequel were recently acquired from Shemaroo Entertainment by Sarita Ashwin Varde of Roaring River Productions who has simultaneously also been working on the film’s script. She will be producing the film along with Shemaroo.

Why did it take so long for the sequel? “Because a special film like Bhagam Bhag deserves a sequel that’s just as much special; when the time was right, we decided to take the plunge,” says Sarita.

Incidentally, Sarita has been associated with filmdom for long now. She has been the creative force behind her husband, Ashwin Varde, who is also a producer with films like Boss, Mubarakan, Kabir Singh, OMG-2 and Khel Khel Mein to his credit.

“We are excited to partner with an incredible team to create a film that will continue the legacy of its predecessor by bringing more laughter, fun and entertainment,” says Hiren Gada, CEO, Shemaroo Entertainment.

Currently in the final stages of writing, Bhagam Bhag 2 is slated to go on floors in mid 2025. Right now, all that the makers promise is that the sequel will be “madder, crazier and funnier.” All other details will be revealed soon when the film is officially announced. Stay tuned.

CrowdStrike Update Causes Global Microsoft Outage, Affecting Services and Bringing ‘Blue Screen of Death’

CrowdStrike, the endpoint security software, caused a major global outage of Microsoft services, including Windows and Office 365, following an update on Friday. The alleged issue brought the ‘blue screen of death’ (BSOD) to Windows devices across the world, with users unable to access their devices. Furthermore, the problem is also reported to have resulted in the disruption of services across information technology (IT) companies, airports, banks and other sectors.

CrowdStrike Error: What Happened

The issue seems to have surfaced following a CrowdStrikeupdate that resulted in ‘Blue Screen of Death’ on Windows devices. The error says, “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart”. However, restarting does not appear to solve the issue, with the device getting stuck in a boot loop.

Microsoft lists the error with the STOP code “PAGE_FAULT-IN-NONPAGED_AREA”. It is allegedly caused to due a failure of a CrowdStrike agent system file, as per the error log.

CrowdStrike Error: Its Impact

Software status monitoring website Downdetector suggests the outage has impacted several Microsoft services, including Microsoft Store and Microsoft 365. The platform also reports that 911 emergency services in several states in the US have also been affected. According to claims on social media, the CrowdStrike update error seems to have resulted in the disruption of services across institutions such as banks, airports and IT companies.

Berlin Air suspended all flights, attributing it to a “technical problem”, a spokesperson told AFP. All check-in and flight services were cancelled until 10 am local time (1:30 pm IST). Furthermore, several US airlines, including Delta, United and American Airlines, grounded their flights, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) citing a communication issue.

India’s IndiGo Airlines issued a statement informing about the impact on its services, resulting in long waiting lines while checking in and errors while booking tickets. It attributed the problem to Microsoft Azure, stating that its digital experts are working on a solution. A similar statement was also issued by Akasa Air and Indian Airlines.

Media outlets were also reported to face issues due to the global outage of Microsoft services, with the UK’s Sky News and CBBC and Australia’s ABC News being some of the ones affected. Furthermore, the London Stock Exchange (LSE), run by the LSE Group, also said it was facing an issue that prevented the RNS news service from publishing on the LSE website.

As many as three Gadgets 360 staffers were impacted by the issue.

CrowdStrike Error: Response

Update: CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz has issued a statement informing that the root cause has been identified and patched. The company is claimed to be “actively working with customers” impacted by the outage. The CEO revealed that the error was not due to a “security incident or cyberattack” but because of a defect in a single content update for the Windows platform. It did not affect Linux or Mac devices.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft have both issued statements following the outage. Microsoft said that several “mitigation actions” were in process, while it also focussed on redirecting impacted traffic to “healthy systems”. As per a Reuters report, Microsoft acknowledged that the problem arose at 6 pm ET (3:30 am IST), with customers in its Central US area facing issues while accessing Azure services.

A Microsoft spokesperson told Gadgets 360, “We’re aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming.”

In a statement hidden behind a registration wall, CrowdStrike acknowledged the issue, stating it “is aware of crash reports”. On the CrowdStrike subreddit, the moderator also published a workaround for those who are still affected by it. To resolve it, it advised users to:

  1. Boot the Windows device into Safe Mode or open the Windows Recovery Environment
  2. Next, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory
  3. Find a file in the system directory matching “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it
  4. Boot the host normally

In a subsequent response, the Texas-based cybersecurity company said that the problem, related to a “Falcon Sensor” on Windows following a content deployment, has been patched and the changes reverted by its engineering teams.
