Microsoft and OpenAI are working on plans for a data center project that could cost as much as $100 billion and include an artificial intelligence supercomputer called “Stargate” set to launch in 2028, The Information reported on Friday.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence technology has led to sky-rocketing demand for AI data centers capable of handling more advanced tasks than traditional data centers.
The Information reported that Microsoft would likely finance the project, which is expected to be 100 times more costly than some of the biggest existing data centers, citing people involved in private conversations about the proposal.
The proposed U.S.-based supercomputer would be the biggest in a series the companies are looking to build over the next six years, the report added.
The Information attributed the tentative cost of $100 billion to a person who spoke to Altman about it and a person who has viewed some of Microsoft’s initial cost estimates. It did not identify those sources.
Altman and Microsoft have spread the supercomputers across five phases, with Stargate as the fifth phase. Microsoft is working on a smaller, fourth-phase supercomputer for OpenAI to be launched around 2026, according to the report.
Microsoft and OpenAI are in the middle of the third phase of the five-phase plan, with a significant portion of the cost for the next two phases involving acquiring the needed AI chips, the report said.
AI chips are often sold at high prices. Chip company Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC earlier in March that the latest “Blackwell” B200 artificial intelligence chip will be priced between $30,000 and $40,000.
Microsoft had also announced a duo of custom-designed computing chips in November last year.
The report said the new project would be designed to work with chips from different suppliers.
“We are always planning for the next generation of infrastructure innovations needed to continue pushing the frontier of AI capability,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Reuters. The spokesperson did not comment directly on the report about the planned launch of the Stargate supercomputer.
Expenses for the plan could exceed $115 billion, more than triple Microsoft’s expenditure last year on capital spending for servers, buildings and other equipment, the report stated.

Intel was sued on Wednesday by shareholders who said the Silicon Valley chipmaker fraudulently concealed problems that led it to post weak results, slash jobs and suspend its dividend, and caused its market value to sink more than $32 billion (roughly Rs. 2,68,732 crore) in a single day.
The proposed class action against Intel, Chief Executive Patrick Gelsinger and Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner was filed in San Francisco federal court.
Shareholders said they were blindsided when Intel revealed on August 1 that its so-called foundry business for making chips on contract for outsiders was in their words “floundering,” costing billions of dollars extra even as revenue declined.
They said the Santa Clara, California-based company’s materially false or misleading statements regarding the business and its manufacturing capabilities inflated its stock price from January 25 to August 1.
Intel had no immediate comment.
The lawsuit came after Intel said last Thursday it would lay off more than 15 percent of its workforce, or more than 15,000 jobs, and suspend its dividend starting in the fourth quarter as part of a restructuring meant to save $10 billion (roughly Rs. 83,976 crore) in 2025.
Intel also posted a $1.61 billion (roughly Rs. 13,520 crore) second-quarter net loss, as revenue fell one percent to $12.83 billion (roughly Rs. 1,07,742 crore).
The company has struggled to fend off competition from rival chipmakers and benefit from growth in artificial intelligence.
Among its rivals are Advanced Micro Devices, Nvidia, Samsung Electronics and Taiwan’s TSMC.
Intel’s share price tumbled 26 percent to $21.48 (roughly Rs. 1,803) on August 2, the day after it announced quarterly results, the job cuts and the dividend suspension.

Microsoft will sell its chat and video app Teams separately from its Office product globally, the US tech giant said on Monday, six months after it unbundled the two products in Europe in a bid to avert a possible EU antitrust fine.
The European Commission has been investigating Microsoft’s tying of Office and Teams since a 2020 complaint by Salesforce-owned competing workspace messaging app Slack.
Teams, which was added to Office 365 in 2017 for free, subsequently replaced Skype for Business and became popular during the pandemic due in part to its video conferencing.
Rivals, however, said packaging the products together gives Microsoft an unfair advantage. The company started selling the two products separately in the EU and Switzerland on August 31 last year.
“To ensure clarity for our customers, we are extending the steps we took last year to unbundle Teams from M365 and O365 in the European Economic Area and Switzerland to customers globally,” a Microsoft spokesperson said.
“Doing so also addresses feedback from the European Commission by providing multinational companies more flexibility when they want to standardise their purchasing across geographies.”
Microsoft said in a blogpost that it was introducing a new lineup of commercial Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites that do not include Teams in regions outside the EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland, and also a new standalone Teams offering for Enterprise customers in those regions.
Starting April 1, customers can either continue with their current licensing deal, renew, update or switch to the new offers.
For new commercial customers, prices for Office without Teams range from $7.75 to $54.75 (roughly from Rs. 646 to Rs. 4,566) depending on the product while Teams Standalone will cost $5.25 (roughly Rs. 437). The figures may vary by country and currency. The company did not disclose prices for current packaged products.
Microsoft’s unbundling may not be enough to stave off EU antitrust charges which will likely be sent to the company in the coming months as rivals criticise the level of the fees and the ability of their messaging services to function with Office Web Applications in their own services, sources said.
