Microsoft Delays Release of AI-Powered Recall, Will First Be Tested With Windows Insiders

Microsoft is delaying the release of its Recall feature, and it will not be available when the first Copilot+ PCs hit the market on June 18. The tech giant introduced Recall, an artificial intelligence (AI) feature that tracks and shows the user history on the device using periodically captured snapshots, at last month’s Microsoft Surface and AI event. However, the feature faced criticism from online communities due to security vulnerabilities and lack of an opt-in system. Last week, the company announced several improvements to address the issues.

AI-Powered Recall gets delayed

Adding an update to last week’s blog post about the improvements added to Recall, Microsoft said that instead of shipping the feature directly to all users with a Copilot+ PC, it will now first be previewed in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks. After the public beta testing and incorporating the feedback, the feature will be released to all Copilot+ PCs in preview mode.

“We are adjusting the release model for Recall to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security. This decision is rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers and to seek additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users,” Microsoft added.

Notably, the Windows maker addressed the criticism of the feature and made several changes to how the feature works. The AI-powered Recall was made entirely opt-in, with a screen explicitly requiring the user’s consent before it gets activated. The feature was also integrated with the Windows Hello security feature, which requires either biometric authentication or a separate PIN code. Additionally, the tech giant said the device will require a “proof of presence” to view the timeline and search in Recall.

Further, a second layer of encryption to the feature’s search index database is also being added to protect it from bad actors. However, it now appears that Microsoft wants to take more time to test the feature within the WIP community, before releasing it globally. According to a report by The Verge, the Recall feature was developed in secrecy and it was not tested publicly before the announcement was made at the Surface event. The company is likely rectifying its mistakes with this move.

Adani Group Plans Billion Chip Project in Maharashtra with Israel’s Tower Semiconductor

Israel’s Tower Semiconductor and Adani Group will invest $10 billion (roughly Rs. 83,958 crore) for a semiconductor project in India’s western state of Maharashtra, its chief minister said in a post on X on Thursday.

India has taken steps to encourage global companies to set up their manufacturing units in the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi aiming to make the country a chipmaker for the world despite initial setbacks.

Foxconn withdrew in July last year from a $19.5 billion (roughly Rs. 1,63,718 crore) semiconductor joint venture with Indian conglomerate Vedanta, and plans by ISMC, a venture between Abu Dhabi-based Next Orbit Ventures and Tower Semiconductor, to invest $3 billion (roughly Rs. 25,187 crore) in India, have been stalled.

Still, India expects its semiconductor market to be worth $63 billion (roughly Rs. 5,28,937 crore) by 2026.

Semiconductor manufacturing marks the latest foray for billionaire Gautam Adani, whose conglomerate has businesses across ports, power utilities, transmission and coal trading.

The $10 billion  (roughly Rs. 83,958 crore) semiconductor plant in Maharashtra will initially have a capacity of 40,000 wafers, the state’s deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a post on X.

Chief Minister Ehnath Shinde said in a social media post that projects worth 1.17 trillion rupees were approved on Thursday, which will create 29,000 jobs in the state.

Two new electric vehicle manufacturing units will also be set up in the state, with Skoda-Volkswagen investing 150 billion rupees for its plant to produce electric vehicles and hybrids.

Toyota-Kirloskar will dole out 212.73 billion-rupees to manufacture hybrid and electric vehicles at its plant in the state.

Mars’ Moons Phobos and Deimos Could Be Asteroid Debris, New Study Reveals

Mars’ Moons Phobos and Deimos Could Be Asteroid Debris, New Study Reveals

Mars’ two moons, Phobos and Deimos, could have originated from the debris of an asteroid torn apart by the planet’s gravity, according to recent simulations. Research published in Icarus suggests this scenario could explain the unique features of these moons, which differ significantly from typical spherical moons seen in the solar system. The potato-like shapes and circular equatorial orbits of these moons have long puzzled scientists, prompting new theories on their formation.

Theories Behind Phobos and Deimos’ Origins

Two primary theories have dominated the discussion on how these moons formed. One posits that they are asteroids captured by Mars’ gravitational pull. However, this hypothesis fails to account for their stable, near-circular orbits. The second theory suggests that Phobos and Deimos may have formed from debris after a massive collision involving Mars. Jacob Kegerreis, a planetary scientist at NASA‘s Ames Research Center, believes a hybrid scenario could provide a plausible answer.

Kegerreis and his team propose that an asteroid may have been captured by Mars’ gravity but was then torn apart, creating a ring of debris. Over time, this material could have coalesced to form the moons, inheriting the circular orbits observed today.

Simulations Offer New Insights

Hundreds of supercomputer simulations were conducted to test the hypothesis. By varying the asteroid’s size, speed, and spin, researchers observed that rings of debris consistently formed under certain conditions. Kegerreis explained that they saw material capable of forming a disk across different scenarios.

Upcoming Mission to Provide Answers

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Mars Moons Exploration mission, set for launch in 2026, aims to gather material from Phobos. This analysis could determine whether the moons share a composition with Mars, supporting the collision theory, or resemble asteroids with water-rich compounds, backing the shredded asteroid hypothesis.

Findings from this mission may shed light on Mars’ moons and help understand moon formation around exoplanets, broadening our understanding of planetary systems.

Illinois Supreme Court overturns Jussie Smollett conviction for alleged hoax

Illinois Supreme Court overturns Jussie Smollett conviction for alleged hoax

The Illinois Supreme Court has overturned a conviction against actor Jussie Smollett, who prosecutors accused of staging a racist and homophobic attack against himself in 2019 in Chicago.

Smollett, who is black and gay, was convicted of five counts of disorderly conduct in 2021.

He had claimed two men targeted him in a hate-crime, yelling racial slurs and putting a noose around his neck while he was walking down the street near his apartment.

Two men testified that the Empire television show star paid them $3,500 (£2,700) to stage the attack.

Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail, but served only six days before he was freed pending appeal.

The state Supreme Court sided with Smollett’s attorneys, who argued in their appeal that Smollett should not have been charged by a special prosecutor after the Cook County State Attorney’s Office dropped charges in exchange for community service.

The decision sparked an uproar from many, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said who said Smollett was “let off scot-free, with no sense of accountability for the moral and ethical wrong of his actions”.

A grand jury later re-established the charges after a special prosecutor took on the case.

“We are aware that this case has generated significant public interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believed it to be unjust,” the state Supreme Court wrote in its opinion on Thursday.

“Nevertheless, what would be more unjust than the resolution of any one criminal case would be a holding from this court that the State was not bound to honor agreements upon which people have detrimentally relied.”

During Smollett’s trial, prosecutors alleged he staged the attack because he was unhappy with a television studio’s response to hate mail he received.

Smollett said the attack was “no hoax” and that he was the victim of a hate crime in Chicago.

But the two men he accused of perpetrating the crime – two brothers, one of whom Smollett said he met through the Empire show – said Smollett hired them and paid them with a check.

Degrading air quality in India – A primer on how to survive with poor AQI

The combination of festive activities and the onset of winter has further worsened the air quality index (AQI) in some states and union territories across India, forcing the Union health ministry to issue an advisory, in which states Health departments and health facilities have been instructed to increase their preparedness for security. Public health against the adverse effects of increasing air pollution levels.

Recently, the ministry has said that people should limit outdoor activities including sports and walking in the early morning/late evening (especially the elderly and vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children and people working outdoors such as traffic police officers Are included).

The central government, in its recent order to states and union territories, has warned that air pollution significantly contributes to serious health conditions and increases the progression of related chronic diseases. It has asked them to initiate measures to ensure preparedness in view of the deteriorating air quality across North India with the onset of winter and its adverse impact on people’s health.

The Centre’s letter directs that public awareness campaigns be carried out through mass media using regional languages and also calls for strengthening the healthcare workforce and increasing participation in sentinel surveillance for air pollution-related diseases. Has been done Weather experts have said the air quality in the national capital is currently in the ‘very poor’ category and hospitals are recording a rise in the number of patients with adverse respiratory symptoms.

Director General of Health Services Atul Goyal, in his letter, said the adverse effects of air pollution are “particularly severe” for vulnerable groups. Noting that chronic diseases caused by long-term exposure to air pollution often lead to increased premature mortality, the letter said there is a need to ensure “advanced preparedness”.

The central government has sought to discourage stubble and waste burning, promote use of public transport, limit dependence on diesel-based generators, etc.

Also, individuals have been advised to monitor air quality indices through government mobile applications before stepping out, avoid heavily crowded areas and choose clean fuel at home for cooking, heating and lighting. Reduce your exposure to polluted air.

The capital and its surrounding region as well as other regions of the country are witnessing a worrying rise in pollution levels, with the Delhi-NCR air quality index (AEX) hovering around the 300-400 range and even Has exceeded 500.

Experts said, in the month of October and the beginning of winter, an increase of about 40% is being seen in cases of heart and respiratory problems, including asthma, due to high levels of pollution. The World Heart Federation (WHF)’s World Heart Report 2024 has indicated shocking data on the relationship between air pollution and cardiovascular disease (CVD) globally. In India, a country that already struggles with a high prevalence of CVD, the impact of environmental factors, particularly air pollution, poses a significant public health challenge.

Experts are now calling for urgent attention and action to address these environmental factors of CVD. Indian cardiologists and public health professionals emphasize that without addressing pollution, tackling heart health challenges will remain an uphill battle.

Stressing on the clinical mechanism, Faraz Ahmed Farooqui, consultant in cardiology at PSRI Hospital, said that long-term exposure to air pollution causes endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress, both of which are important precursors to cardiovascular diseases.

“In India, polluted areas have seen a significant increase in the incidence of conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke and heart failure. These pollutants not only increase blood pressure but also trigger inflammatory reactions in blood vessels, accelerating atherosclerosis, thereby increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes,” he said.

The World Heart Report also highlights how particulate matter from agricultural practices, particularly residue burning in North India, has a significant impact on air quality. Smoke from burning crop stubble increases particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), impacting the cardiovascular health of millions of people. Praveen Gupta, principal director and head of Neurology at Fortis Hospital, said pollution has a significant impact on human health.

“It can aggravate respiratory problems like COPD and asthma. Apart from being the main cause of cancer, it also increases the risk of heart disease. It is also a major risk factor for stroke, cognitive impairment, and dementia. Pollution has a negative impact on mental health, causing distraction, irritability and brain fog. There is growing evidence that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. “Poor air quality has a significant impact on our mental health, increasing the risk of anxiety and depression,” he said.

The primary causes of this increased risk include traffic exhaust smoke, domestic wood burning, and elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide, which can be attributed to industrial emissions, gardening equipment, power plants, and construction and exhaust fumes.

Experts are now advocating taking steps to reduce air pollution in their communities, such as using public transportation wherever possible, reducing wood and coal use in the home, repairing cars on a regular basis and Inspecting tires often.“We can do that too. “Avoid exposure to high levels of air pollution by limiting the time you spend in areas with high amounts of traffic or other pollutants, as well as using filtration systems to keep the air in your homes pure,” says Dr. Gupta Added. They warned that household air pollution is associated with increased mortality from ischemic heart disease and stroke, with women and children in rural areas particularly vulnerable.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says air pollution can cause a variety of health problems, including heart disease (stroke and heart disease), respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute respiratory infections and asthma), cancer (lung cancer), prematurity and low birth weight, cognitive and neurological impairment.

Air pollution is a major environmental health problem that affects people of all income levels. In 2019, WHO estimated that 4.2 million people died prematurely due to outdoor air pollution. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are disproportionately affected by air pollution, with 89% of premature deaths occurring in these regions. Air pollution is the second leading cause of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) globally after tobacco.

“Ambient (outdoor) air pollution in both cities and rural areas is causing particulate matter which results in stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Additionally, approximately 2.6 billion people are exposed to dangerous levels of household air pollution from using polluting open fires or ordinary stoves for cooking with kerosene, biomass (wood, animal dung and crop waste) and coal. ,” WHO says. It states that air pollution is the contamination of the indoor or outdoor atmosphere by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.

Household combustion appliances, motor vehicles, industrial facilities, and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution causes respiratory and other diseases and is a significant source of morbidity and mortality.

WHO data shows that almost the entire global population (99%) breathes air that exceeds WHO guideline limits and contains high levels of pollutants, with low- and middle-income countries suffering the most exposure. Are. Air quality is also closely linked to Earth’s climate and ecosystems on a global scale.)
