Apple has rolled out macOS Sequoia as its latest software updates for supported Mac computers, along with iPadOS 18, watchOS 11 and tvOS 18. These updates introduce new features and customisation options on Apple’s devices, while future updates will add support for Apple Intelligence — new features that are powered by artificial intelligence (AI) on the iPhone 15 Pro models, the new iPhone 16 lineup, and select tablets and Mac models with Apple’s M-series chipsets. These software updates were first shown off at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024).

Here are some of the most notable changes on macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2. You can update eligible devices to these software versions, but it’s better to back up important data before installing major operating system updates. After updating to macOS Sequoia, users can access a new iPhone Mirroring feature that allows them to control and use their smartphone from their computer. macOS finally supports window tiling via drag controls, eliminating the need for third party apps. Safari has been updated with a new reader mode and the ability to show relevant information about locations and media while browsing.

The company has also introduced support for Apple Pay on third party browsers with macOS Sequoia, while Game Porting Toolkit 2 is expected to enable users to play more games designed for Windows. Mac users can also mirror their iPhone notifications, while taking advantages of updates to the Messages app like text effects, message scheduling, and emoji reactions on messages.  

iPadOS 18 and tvOS 18

Just like iOS 18, Apple has included support for customisation with a redesigned control center, tinted icons and widgets on the home screen. Users will also be able to access the new Messages features that are available on macOS, while Game Mode is now available on iPadOS 18 with relevant optimisations while games are running. Smart Script is available in the Notes app, along with collapsible sections. Using an Apple Pencil to solve problems in Math Notes is also accessible via the Calculator and Notes app. 

Meanwhile, Apple has introduced support for 21:9 video format with the latest tvOS 18 update, along with support for on device Siri. Users can also access new screen savers on Apple TV, using portrait images in their iCloud library. tvOS 18 also adds support for robot vacuums in the Home app, as well as guest access for specific devices, the ability to monitor home electricity usage, and handsfree unlocking using ultra-wideband (UWB) locks.

watchOS 11

A new Vitals app on watchOS 11 will allow users to see insights based on their recent health metrics, while a new Training Load feature lets them know when they are overreaching on their fitness activities. The update also adds support for interactive widgets, along with an improved smart stack with Live Activities.

watchOS 11 also improves the Photos watch face, according to Apple. Users will be able to access the Check In security feature from their smartwatch, while the Translate app will come in handy while traveling. Apple Watch Series 10 owners will also get access to Sleep Apnea tracking in 150 countries and regions, according to the company. 

visionOS 2

The Apple Vision Pro has only been available for a few months — it first went on sale in the US earlier this year — but the company has already released the first major software update for the spatial computer. The device now lets users capture or create spatial photos that can be viewed on the headset. Meanwhile, the home view (or home screen) can finally be rearranged on visionOS 2.

Users will also have access to new gestures on the Vision Pro, while SharePlay for photos has been added along with support for using a connected mouse. Developers will be able to access new Volumetric APIs, Enterprise APIs, and TableTopKit to build more capabilities into their apps for the Apple Vision Pro that will be supported on visionOS 2.   

How to Update Your Devices 

It’s always a good idea to back up important data before you install a major software update. Once you’ve done that, you can follow the steps below to update your Mac computer, Apple Watch, or iPad to macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and iPadOS 18, respectively.

A 2,600-year-old inscription engraved on a monument in Turkey, known as Arslan Kaya or “lion rock,” has been deciphered, according to research by Professor Mark Munn of Pennsylvania State University. This ancient carving, which has endured significant damage from weathering and looting, contains references to Materan, a goddess revered by the Phrygians, an ancient civilisation that thrived in the region between 1200 and 600 B.C. Materan, often simply called “the Mother,” was central to Phrygian religious beliefs.

Monument Details and Historical Significance

The Arslan Kaya monument is decorated with images of lions and sphinxes, which were symbols of strength and protection in Phrygian culture. The name Materan, deciphered through careful analysis of the damaged inscription, appears alongside a depiction of the goddess. Materan was later venerated by other cultures, known as “Mother of the Gods” by the Greeks and as “Magna Mater” or “Great Mother” by the Romans.

At the time the inscription was created, the region was under the influence of the Lydian kingdom, which also held Materan in high regard. The inscription, believed to have been part of a longer text, may have detailed the commissioning party and explained the goddess’s significance.

Challenges in Deciphering the Inscription

The text has been the subject of scholarly debate for over a century. Munn utilised detailed photographs and historical records to piece together its meaning, noting that optimal lighting on April 25, 2024, played a crucial role in capturing the monument’s details.

Rostyslav Oreshko, a lecturer at the Practical School of Advanced Studies in France, told LiveScience that Munn’s work affirms earlier readings from the 19th century, which identified the name Materan. Despite this, Oreshko emphasised that the study solidifies previous interpretations rather than offering entirely new insights.

The deciphered inscription sheds light on the enduring cultural significance of Materan and highlights the Phrygians’ influence on subsequent civilisations.

The latest laptop from Honor runs on Windows 11 Home Chinese Edition and sports a 14.6-inch OLED screen. It runs on Intel Core Ultra 5 or Core Ultra 7 CPUs, along with up to 32GB of RAM. Honor has equipped the MagicBook Art 14 2024 with a 60Wh battery that can be charged to 46 percent in 30 minutes, according to the company.

Honor MagicBook Art 14 2024 price is set at CNY 7,799 (roughly Rs. 89,800) for the base model with a Core Ultra 5 CPU with 16GB of RAM. The Core Ultra 5 model with 32GB of RAM is priced at CNY 8,499 (roughly Rs. 97,900). Customers can also purchase the top-end model with a Core Ultra 7 CPU and 32GB of RAM that costs CNY 9,499 (roughly Rs. 1,09,400).

The laptop is listed on the company’s website in Summer Olives and Sunrise Impressions colour options (translated from Chinese) and is already available to order in China. There’s no word from the company on plans to launch the device in other markets.

Honor MagicBook Art 14 2024 Specifications

The newly launched Honor MagicBook Art 14 2024 features a 14.6-inch Ultra-HD (3,120×2,080 pixels) OLED touch screen display with 258ppi pixel density and 700 nits peak brightness. It also offers 100 percent coverage of the DCI:P3 colour gamut. The laptop is powered by up to Intel Core Ultra 7 155H chipset with Intel Arc graphics, paired with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM.

Honor has equipped the MagicBook Art 14 2024 laptop with 1TB of SSD storage. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, and the laptop is equipped with a USB Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Type-A port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a 3.5mm combo audio port.

The laptop also offers NFC connectivity and has a fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication. The MagicBook Art 14 2024 us equipped with a 60Wh lithium polymer battery that can be charged to 46 percent in 30 minutes and takes 95 minutes for a full charge, according to the company. Besides, it measures 316.77×223.63×12.95mm and weighs 1.03kg.

Nubia Z70 Ultra will launch in China next week, the brand announced through its official social media channel. The company, which is a sub-subsidiary of ZTE, has also offered us a first official look at the front design of the phone. The Nubia Z70 Ultra is teased to come with BOE’s 6.85-inch display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a high 95.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. It is already confirmed to ship with Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC.

Nubia, via its official Weibo account, announced that the launch of Nubia Z70 Ultra is set for November 21 at 2:00pm (11:30am IST). The brand shared an image of the smartphone on the microblogging platform, showing its front design with thin bezels. The display lacks a notch or punch-holes for the selfie camera.

The Nubia Z70 Ultra is confirmed to boast a 6.85-inch display with 1.5K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and 95.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. The BOE-made display is touted to deliver 2,000nits of peak brightness and 430ppi pixel density. It is teased to sport 1.25mm thin bezels. It will include an under-display camera using an AI Transparent Algorithm 7.0.

Nubia previously confirmed that the upcoming Z70 Ultra will run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC. It will also feature Nubia’s Nebula AIOS and is likely to ship with upgrades over last year’s Nubia Z60 Ultra.

To recall, the Nubia Z60 Ultra was launched in December last year with a starting price tag of $599 (roughly Rs. 49,000) for the base 8GB RAM + 256GB storage model. It had a 6.8-inch full-HD+ (1,116×2,480 pixels) AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and was powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM.

For optics, the Nubia Z60 Ultra features a triple rear camera setup, comprising a 50-megapixel 35mm Sony IMX800 sensor, a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera sensor, and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera. It has a 12-megapixel under-display selfie camera and houses a 6,000mAh battery.
