Robert Pattinson is set to join the starry cast of director Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming film project. The actor, who previously worked with Nolan in the 2020 sci-fi thriller ‘Tenet’, now joins the ensemble cast featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Zendaya. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Pattinson will reportedly join Damon, Holland and Hathaway in leading roles in the film, while Nyong’o and Zendaya are expected to appear in significant supporting roles. Although details about the film are kept under wraps, it has been reported that Nolan has written the script and will direct the film, which is set to release on 17 July 2026. The project, scheduled to begin in the first half of 2025, will also be produced by the filmmaker and his wife, Emma Thomas.
Pattinson and Nolan’s last team-up ‘Tenet’ faced challenges at the box office as the film was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the film earning just around $365 million globally. On the work front, Pattinson has been busy shuttling between film sets. The actor is currently filming ‘The Drama’ with Zendaya. After this, he is expected to begin work on the DC comic book movie ‘The Batman 2‘ which will see him reprising his role as Bruce Wayne in the Matt Reeves directorial. This will also be Nolan’s first release since his Oscar-winning directorial ‘Oppenheimer‘ which released in cinemas last year.

Qualcomm on Wednesday announced the launch of the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core CPU, ahead of the upcoming IFA 2024 event in Berlin. The new Snapdragon chipset is a more affordable variant of the company’s 10-core Arm-based laptop processors launched earlier this year, and it is built on the same 4nm process technology. The chipset is also equipped with the same Oryon CPU cores as the company’s other X series processors, and it supports on-device artificial intelligence (AI) applications and features.
Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core Features
The octa-core Snapdragon X Plus chipset is equipped with eight of Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU cores with 30MB CPU cache — 12MB less than the more expensive X Plus chips — along with support for up to 64GB of LPDDR5X RAM. The X1P-42-100 variant has a peak clock speed of 3.2GHz and a 1.7 TFLOPS Adreno GPU, while the X1P-46-100 chip has a slightly higher clock speed of 3.4GHz with a faster 2.1 TFLOPS GPU.
The Adreno GPU on the newly announced Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processors supports up to three external displays at 4K resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU is capable of 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS) for on-device AI features on compatible applications.
Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip will support PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD or UFS 4.0 storage. Devices equipped with the processor will also be able to support up to 36-megapixel cameras with support for 4K HDR video capture via the company’s Spectra ISP.

The Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF system on the processor enables support for mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G networks with up to 10Gbps download speeds. The Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 mobile connectivity system brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support. Computers equipped with the chipset can also be equipped with up to three USB 4.0 ports.
Qualcomm also claims that the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chipset is capable of delivering up to twice the amount of battery life than its closest rival — the Intel Core Ultra 7 155U processor. It’s currently unclear how the chip fares against Apple’s power efficient M2 chip.
Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core Availability
Computers powered by the new Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chipset will be available starting today, from OEMs including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Ahead of IFA 2024, Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon said that pricing for these laptops will start at $799 (roughly Rs. 67,100).
In August, the family of United States Air Force Sergeant David S Price finally buried his remains after more than 50 years of waiting.
The 26-year-old was stationed at a top-secret CIA base – Lima Site 85 – on a mountaintop in northeast Laos when it was overrun by Lao and Vietnamese communist forces in March 1968.
Price was among 13 US personnel, along with 42 Thai and ethnic Hmong soldiers, who were killed at the CIA radar station that was used to guide US bomber planes in their attacks on Laos and neighbouring Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
It took decades to find and identify Price’s remains largely because US warplanes were given orders to destroy the CIA site to cover up its work, part of a wider effort to obscure “The Secret War” Washington illegally waged in Laos – an officially neutral country – in the 1960s and 1970s.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the commencement of a major strand in the US’s secret war, Operation Barrel Roll – a nine-year US bombing campaign that would see Laos becoming the most heavily bombed country per capita in history.

First visit to Laos by a US defence secretary
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is in the Laotian capital Vientiane this week, becoming Washington’s first-ever defence secretary to visit Laos.
Austin is attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus on Thursday, as part of a regional tour which has already included stops in Australia, the Philippines and Fiji after Laos.
The defence secretary’s visit comes against a backdrop of intensifying geostrategic rivalry in the Asia Pacific region, with Southeast Asian defence chiefs looking for security assurances amid growing maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea and uncertainty in advance of January’s return of President-elect Donald Trump.
Not on Austin’s official agenda, however, is a remembrance of Operation Barrel Roll and the start of the darkest chapter in Laos’s modern history.

Operation Barrel Roll
Operation Barrel Roll formed a key component of the Secret War on Laos, so-called because successive US administrations conducted military operations in Laos, including arming 30,000 local anti-communist ethnic Hmong forces, while hiding America’s involvement in the war from Congress.
Only revealed to the US public in 1971, the military campaign in Laos was one of the most closely held secrets in the US’s long, disastrous and ultimately unsuccessful Cold War-era, anti-communist efforts in Southeast Asia in the 1960s and 70s.
As the conflict in neighbouring Vietnam spilled over into Laos, Operation Barrel Roll saw the US military fly 580,344 bombing missions – dropping 260 million bombs – between 1964 and 1973 as they targeted communist North Vietnamese supply routes inside Laos.
“It was extremely destructive, and it accomplished virtually nothing. They were bombing very heavily in ways that did not make sense strategically,” Bruce Lockhart, an associate professor of Southeast Asian history at the National University of Singapore, told Al Jazeera.
“The kind of war that was going on there, it just simply wasn’t effective to bomb. And so you caused a huge amount of damage and loss of life without really accomplishing anything,” Lockhart said.

Operation Barrel Roll saw the equivalent of one US bomb dropped every eight minutes, every day, 24 hours a day, for nine years.
The result was more bombs dropped on Laos – whose neutral status was protected under agreements signed at the Geneva Conferences in 1954 and 1962 – than in the entirety of World War II.
Lasting legacy of US bombing of Laos
Though more than half a century has passed since the last US bomb was dropped, the enduring legacy of that time is still felt today. With approximately 30 percent of the cluster bombs dropped by the US failing to detonate, tens of millions of unexploded ordnance (UXO) remain buried in Lao soil.
Since 1964, an estimated 50,000 people have been killed or injured by UXO in Laos, according to the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor, with about 20,000 of these casualties occurring since the war ended in 1975.

Children, lured by the toy-like appearance of cluster bombs, which are tennis-ball-sized fragmentation bomblets, dropped in the millions on Laos, make up approximately 75 percent of injuries.
Fourteen of Laos’s 18 provinces, and up to a quarter of the country’s villages, are “severely contaminated” with UXO, according to Norwegian People’s Aid, which carries out UXO and mine clearance work in the country.
Thanks, in part, to around $391m in US funding to clear UXO in Laos since 1995, the battle against the bombs is being won – albeit slowly.
The number of deaths from unexploded bombs fell from around 200 to 300 annually in the 1990s, to about 50 per year by the late 2010s. But by one estimate, at the current rate of bomb clearance operations, it will be 200 years before Laos is UXO-free.

Tom Vater, a Bangkok-based writer and co-author of the documentary The Most Secret Place On Earth – The CIA’s Covert War in Laos, told Al Jazeera that “UXO is the most obvious, visible legacy of the Secret War”.
But, he added, another legacy of the destructive US bombing campaign was the rise to power of the ruling Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, who ultimately defeated the US-backed royalist forces in the country’s civil war in 1975, governing the country with an iron fist ever since.
“The nature of the politics in Laos is so hermit-like, like North Korea and Cuba. There is a similarity there in that there’s just no accountability to the outside world. That’s another legacy of the Secret War,” Vater said.
“They won the civil war, and then they shut the country down, and then they ran with that,” he said.
“For the small communist elite that runs the country, that’s been a recipe for success, so they just keep it that way,” he added.
Redmi K80 series, which comprises two models — Redmi K80 and Redmi K80 Pro —is rumoured to launch in China soon. Ahead of its anticipated debut, a new listing on a benchmarking platform suggests that the purported Pro model could be powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon processor. In a separate development, full specifications of both handsets have also been leaked, revealing that the base model in the Redmi K80 series will also be powered by a powerful chipset, as per claims on social media.
Redmi K80 Pro Geekbench Listing
Redmi K80 Pro was earlier reportedly spotted on China’s 3C certification platform with three model numbers: 24122RKC7C, 24127RK2CC, and 24127RK2CC. One of the purported variants has now surfaced on Geekbench. It is said to have the model number 24122RKC7C and could be powered by an octa-core chipset with an ARMv8 architecture, six performance cores clocked at 3.53GHz, and two prime cores operating at 4.32GHz.
While the chipset’s name isn’t stated, the listed clock speeds suggest it is likely to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite that was launched at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii last month. The SoC may be paired with approximately 14.76GB of RAM and the motherboard is dubbed “sun”.
In the Geekbench 6.3.0 for Android AArch64 cross-platform benchmark, the purported Redmi K80 Pro had 2,753 and 8,460 single and multi-core scores, respectively.

Specifications of Redmi K80 series were also leaked on the Chinese social media platform Weibo (via Gizmochina) by tipster Experience More (translated from Chinese). As per the tipster, the base Redmi K80 may be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It could sport a 2K Huaxing LTPS display and a flat screen. For optics, the handset is speculated to have a triple rear camera system, comprising a 50-megapixel Omnivision OV50 main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. On the front, the Redmi K80 is tipped to get a 20-megapixel Omnivision OV20B camera. The handset may be backed by a 6,500mAh battery with support for 90W fast charging.
On the other hand, the Redmi K80 Pro is claimed to have a 2K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The handset could have the same primary camera as the base model, but it will be joined by a 32MP ultra-wide angle ISOCELL KD1 lens, and a 50MP ISOCELL JN5 telephoto camera with 2.6x optical zoom. It may be backed by a 6,000mAh battery with support for 120W (wired) and 50W (wireless) fast charging.
Both the purported smartphones are tipped to get IP68 rating against dust and water ingress.

Swara Bhasker married Fahad Ahmad in February 2023 in court under the Special Marriage Act. They are parents to baby girl Raabiyaa born in September of the same year.

Android 16 Developer Preview 1 has been released by Google. This is a bit early compared to Google’s previous Android launch schedules. The first developer preview of Android 15 launched in February 2024. The new developer preview comes a month after the public release of Android 15. Like previous developer previews, the Android 16 Developer Preview 1 is aimed at developers and will be initially available for download on Pixel smartphones. The preview will include bugs and broken features, and it will run from November 2024 until the final public release next year. The update brings a handful of new features like an embedded photo picker, medical record support, and an updated Privacy Sandbox.

In a blog post on Monday, Google announced the launch of Android 16 Developer Preview 1. Over the past few years, the company has opted for the February launch window for its Android releases. Google also confirmed that a stable version of Android 16 would come in Q2 2025. It plans to have another release in Q4 of next year with new developer APIs.

Google will offer six major releases of Android 16 before the final release in the second quarter of next year. A second Developer Preview will arrive in December, while Beta releases start in January. Google is targeting Platform Stability in March and April while the final release is scheduled to take place in May.
The first developer preview of Android 16 brings an embedded photo picker for apps. This functionality will provide a built-in way for users to grant app access to selected images and videos from both local and cloud storage, instead of their entire media library.
Google is updating Health Connect in Android 16. With the update, Health Connect will let apps read and write medical records in FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) format. This API is currently part of an early access program. Further, Android 16 incorporates the latest version of the Privacy Sandbox on Android.
Android 16 Developer Preview Compatibility
Google Pixel 6a and newer models are eligible to receive the Android 16 update. The first developer preview with build number BP21.241018.009 will be available for Google Pixel 9 series, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 8a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 6 series and Pixel 6a. Over-the-air (OTA) images for all these smartphones are also available.

Liam Payne died on October 16 following a tragic fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires after falling from his third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in the Argentinian capital.
