Veteran actor Moon Moon Sen`s husband Bharat Dev Varma died at his residence here on Tuesday due to old age-related ailments, family sources said. Dev Varma, 83, is survived by his wife and two daughters Raima and Riya who are also actors.
He breathed his last at their Ballygunge Circular Road residence, even as arrangements were being made to take him to a nearby hospital after his health condition deteriorated, the sources said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a post on X, said, “Saddened by the demise of Bharat Dev Varma, the husband of filmstar Moon Moon Sen, and himself a great well-wisher of mine.”

New Delhi, No vanity vans, a family-like set and two rising stars. Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan says “Karan Arjun”, starring Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan as brothers reincarnated, is the story of a mother’s belief which unfolds like a fairytale.

Roshan is re-releasing the movie on November 22 just ahead of its 30th anniversary in January.
He said both Salman and Shah Rukh had different reasons for doing the film, which originally released on January 13, 1995 and also featured veteran stars Rakhee and Amrish Puri. Mamta Kulkarni, Kajol and Johnny Lever were also part of the movie.
“I had worked with Rakhee a lot as an actor and with Amrish Puri ji in ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’. We became good friends. Shah Rukh worked with me in ‘King Uncle’. In fact, I gave him the first cheque as a signing amount though his other two films released prior to ‘King Uncle’,” Roshan told PTI in an interview.
“We were all like a family and when I narrated the story to them, Salman loved it, Shah Rukh didn’t believe in it. He told me, ‘I don’t believe in reincarnation but if you are making it, I will work on it’,” the filmmaker said, recalling his initial conversation with the two actors.
Over the years, the movie and its dialogues like ‘Mere Karan Arjun Ayenge’, ‘Thakur to Gyo’ and others have acquired a cult status and are now part of memes and reels.
Decoding the film’s appeal across generations, Roshan said most of reincarnation dramas in Hindi cinema revolved around lovers but he thought about making a movie that spoke of the bond between a mother and her children.
“If her sons are killed in front of her and she demands God to bring them back and they are reincarnated, would that not make for a good story? I remember Puri ji asking me, ‘Rakesh, do you think Karan Arjun would come back?’ I told him, ‘They will come back to avenge their death if you kill them brutally.’ It was all fun,” he said.
Roshan said one tries to be sincere to the story but how the film performs at the box office depends on the “chemistry between the audience and the movie”.
“It’s a miracle that people have loved ‘Karan Arjun’ and made it their own. I am going to release the film 30 years later and I will get to know whether they still love it or not. Will they believe in these emotions and this fairytale? I hope they will because it is a fairytale, but it is also a test for me,” he added.
Shah Rukh and Salman, who are great friends in real life, worked together on a movie for the first time in the 1995 hit and while they have shared screen occasionally, the chemistry in their first film together is remembered even today.
The director, known for films such as “Koyla”, “Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai”, “Koi… Mil Gaya”, “Krrish” and “Krrish 3”, credits this to the way film sets operated in the 90s.
“There were no vanity vans at the time so everyone would be together on the sets. If Johnny Lever was shooting for his scenes, all the actors, including Amrish Puri ji, would sit and ‘gup shup’ would happen. We would take our evening tea together. If we were shooting outdoors, there would be a small ‘mehfil’. Actors bonded with each other and that bond reflected in their movies as well.”
Roshan said son Hrithik Roshan, who debuted with “Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai” in 2000 and is one of the most successful actors of his generation, would often assist him in all his films.
Hrithik, who was 17 at the time, recently shared a memory of how ‘Bhaag Arjun Bhaag scene’ in the movie came to be, was also a part of every story narration, he revealed.
“That’s how he has learned and even today, he is the best person to bounce ideas across. I tell him impossible stories that would otherwise not work but he gets what I am thinking. He understands that the story will connect with the masses, from Jhumri Telaiya to someone sitting in LA.”
Asked whether he is someone who reads the reviews of his films, Roshan said while audience verdict means everything to him, he reads up on what others are saying about his work.
“They have always written badly about my films but I make films for the audience and if they love it, then it does not matter. But if you read something, you can improve upon certain points in the next movie. I lean towards the audience for the appreciation of my films,” he added.
Roshan, son of music director Roshan, started out in films as an assistant director and went on to star in many movies such as “Khoobsurat”, “Aankhon Aankhon Mein” and “Kamchor”.
He turned to direction with “Khudgarz” in 1987 and followed it up with “Khoon Bhari Maang”, “Kishen Kanhaiya”, “Khel” and “King Uncle”.
The filmmaker said he always had a dream to have his own prodution house like multi-hyphenates Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand.
“As an actor, I was not getting the success that I wanted, so I became a producer and then director. But before turning director, I watched more than 600 movies, both hits and flops, as I wanted to understand the craft. I have always tried to make my next film different from what I have done before.”
Asked about the new generation embracing “Karan Arjun”, Roshan said he keeps hearing about the movie’s popularity from people around him.
“You feel good that people remember your film even after 30 years. I would call it God’s blessing because I certainly didn’t plan it,” he said.

Half of survey respondents also say mining giant’s workplace culture has improved ‘a lot’ or ‘a little’.
More than one-third of workers at Rio Tinto experienced bullying in the previous 12 months, a progress review has found, nearly three years after the mining giant pledged to tackle pervasive sexism and racism in the workplace.
Among the nearly 12,000 surveyed Rio Tinto employees, 39 percent reported being bullied, up from 31 percent in 2021, the report commissioned by the British-Australian company showed on Wednesday.
Female employees were more likely to say they experienced bullying.
Half of the women surveyed reported such experiences, compared with 36 percent of men, up from 36 percent of women and 29 percent of men, respectively, in 2021.
The rise in bullying against women was partly due to “increasing retaliation in the form of gendered bullying as a response to Rio Tinto’s efforts to promote gender diversity and inclusion,” the report said.
Seven percent of respondents – 16 percent of women and 4 percent of men – said they had experienced sexual harassment, a proportion unchanged from 2021.
Eight employees said they had experienced actual or attempted sexual assault or rape, compared with five in 2021.
Despite the findings, about half of the employees reported that the workplace culture at the company had improved.
Fifty percent of respondents said the situation in relation to bullying had gotten “a lot” or “a little” better, while 47 percent and 46 percent of respondents, respectively, reported improvements in relation to sexual harassment and racism.
The review also found that 26 of the recommendations outlined in the 2022 Everyday Respect Report commissioned by the company had been largely implemented.
Rio Tinto’s chief executive, Jakob Stausholm, said he was “greatly troubled” that workers were still experiencing harmful behaviours but encouraged by the company’s efforts to change.
“The review also shows that while progress is being made, achieving the sustained change we want to see in our culture will require ongoing focus and effort,” Stausholm said in a statement.
“My message today is that we will stay the course.”
The review, conducted by former Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick, comes after a 2022 parliamentary inquiry in Western Australia found that sexual harassment and assault were widespread in the mining sector.

But it’s an amazing thing for Ridley because I know how important that is for him. So to see his film celebrated in that context was pretty special.”

Subsequently, he becomes a gladiator after being bought by Macrinus (Washington) and seeks revenge.
At the premiere, Mescal told the PA news agency he would “absolutely love” to do a third Gladiator film after director Ridley Scott teased that he could be looking to do a follow-up.

The film which began its third Monday on a low Rs 1. 15 crore collection, saw its overall numbers increase to an estimated Rs 1.35 crore nett on Tuesday. According to early estimates on sacnilk.com, the Rohit Shetty directorial now has a total week 3 collection of Rs 12.85 crore nett. This is a significant drop in numbers for the Diwali release. The cop-action film began its box office run on a high, earning an estimated Rs 173 crore nett in its first week. This was followed by a collection of Rs 47.5 crore on week two.
The third instalment in the ‘Singham’ franchise saw its collections take a significant dip in its third weekend, earning just around Rs 2.75 crore on Friday, Rs 3.35 crore on Saturday and Rs 4.25 crore on Sunday. Monday’s sharp decline followed by Tuesday’s minimal growth, brought the total estimated earnings to Rs 233.35 crore.
The film still managed to outperform ‘The Sabarmati Report‘ which earned an estimated Rs 1.25 crore on its first Tuesday at the box office. The film that enjoyed being in the lead for two weeks, was beaten this past weekend by Kartik Aaryan‘s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3‘. The horror comedy is now in the lead with an estimated Rs 235 crore in its kitty. However, it must be noted that ‘Singham Again’ reportedly has a significantly larger budget of Rs 350 crore. It remains to be seen how much the film can rake in before the end of its box office run.
